Anyway, looks like the best way to get your membership cancelled is to sell off your membership "benefits." So, for the low, low price of $0.00, here's a few:

Astrogaming: 348ECAFF - 10% off
GameHQ: GHQeca1 - 10% off preplayed games
ThinkGeek: ECA09 - $5 orders over $25, $10 off orders over $50
Hyatt Hotels: B200955 - 5-10% off

Will this actually work? How does one sell a membership? Do you put it up on craigslist or something? Seems like that would be easier than writing a letter or contacting banks/ credit card companies.

If that's true, then the entire ECA is nothing but a scam. However, I'm willing to bet the huge backlash over this will result in a change in the next few weeks.

This is going to be fun to watch as it unfolds and completely bites them in the ass. Seriously, how stupid can they be? Not only is this probably violating several laws, it will end all goodwill toward them from any current or potential members. Their forums are quite entertaining today.

I signed up back in September because, hey, it was free. Never even bothered to use any codes before they pulled them. I went through the online cancellation process which has now apparently been invalidated. There's no way I'm going to waste time typing, printing, and mailing a letter since this situation will be resolved way before my renewal date comes up.

I've been getting a lot of mail about the ECA this morning. The Joystiq article is a good break down of what's going on. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it but in the meantime we've gone ahead and pulled the ECA promotion we were running as a part of PAX registration. If the story changes I'll let you know.

It probably won't, and I'm well aware of that. They know that a paid membership isn't worth shit at this point, which is why they're making everyone that gave them a credit card number jump through hoops in order to cancel.

From Chase,

Please be advised if you have authorized any recurring charge to the merchant, they can charge your new card even if they do not have the new card information. Since they have the old card details in their system. Hence you will need to cancel the service from that particular merchant.
I guess ECA's "out" is their "the whole cancel online thing that was there really wasn't suppose to be there and didn't work" however they've yet to tell people who signed up that, so ... if they don't change anything, there's going to be a shit storm..

They replied back that they would forward it to the "appropriate department" and get back to me within a business day.

For what it's worth, my XBOX Live and Disney Movie Club accounts autorenewed despite having an expired cc on file. In fact, the cc I used for Live expired over a year ago and I'm still being billed (I ever intended to cancel) for it. Haven't updated my cc with DMC either.

So I'm guessing it is indeed legal.

ETA: I should have read what you quoted in the post above, Pilot. Looks like you already got your answer. ;)

Looks like some folks are using this for a free, online way to cancel:

That's a good idea, but did ECA ever come out and state what information they require in order to cancel a membership?

Every thread on their forums that asked about it was locked with a mod response of "You should mail the letter you've been told to send instead of starting new threads," with no further elaboration or reference/link to said letter details.

What info is needed?

Just say you want to cancel and include your full name and email.

They are in serious damage control mode now. On their forum, you can't even make a thread about the membership. Any threads just get locked and they refer you to their feedback page..

I did that as well. I picked the "Well this is awkward" one; it felt the most appropriate.

From the BBB website...

"This business is not currently rated. BBB has recently received numerous complaints against this business, and will issue a rating after it has fully evaluated them."

rotfl That's what you get ECA for taking advantage of those you had claimed to protect.

Thanks for the link Groucho. Almost as easy as clicking on a button on the ECA's site.
