Oh... So my simply canceling auto-renewal today was enough? If so, that's good news.

Guess what happened when I checked my bank statement today. A good ole charge from the ECA for 19.99. I'm pretty livid right now. I have my email from 12-16-09 saying my membership had been canceled. Obviously, my credit card info had not been removed from the system like the email said since they fucking processed it again. So a warning to those who were behind me in renewals, keep your eyes peeled for a charge from them.

That sucks. At least you kept the e mail. I kept mine too just in case. Keep us updated on what happens from here since most of us will have to jump through the same hoops.

I bet this could easily be contested in a court if need be, and if it happens to many people, I bet we will see that happen.

Before you even contact them, you should fire off an email to all the major gaming sites. Some of them were quick to report the shit last year and I'm guessing one or more of them would be glad to write a quick story and follow up with the ECA. The more bad press this organization gets, the better.

Can't you just contact your credit card company, dispute the charge and have it removed?

Absolutely. Talk to some dudes at Joystiq or Kotaku...

Yes, but that's not the point with these guys. First they screw around with the autocancel, then when they allow it they apparently screwed that up too.

I'll send off an email to one of the gaming sites. It's spreading over at CAG right now as well as I believe there are 2 others showing charges.

I'm disputing the charge with my bank. I wish I had charged it to a regular CC instead of my bank. I guess they charged as a debit so now my bank has to issue me a new card instead of just canceling the charge. Great...so now I'm without a freaking card.

The first rule of buying shit over the internet is to never use your debit card/bank account. How do people still not know this?

I think I joined in June, so I'll have to remember to check my account then.

I know...I know. I typically don't. I was trying to get in the habit of not using my CC and pulling money from my account.

Ah, ECA, how much more can you screw up? No, seriously.

The email I got today:

Thank you, because we are thrilled that you have chosen to renew your membership with the Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) and lend your voice to our mutual cause.

Thanks again for your time, efforts and support. The ECA is successful in large part because of members like you we very much appreciate your help.
The email I got in January:

To Whom It May Concern:

Thank you for your letter requesting to terminate your membership with the Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA). This notification is confirmation that your request has been processed and your membership in the organization, cancelled.

All credit card information relevant to processing your dues has been removed, so if you wish to re-join the association going forward new/updated payment information will need to be manually re-entered.

To re-join the ECA, please visit http://www.theeca.com.

Thank you.
Now to check my credit card bills. Joy.

I know it's a pain in the ass, but why don't you just preemptively cancel your cards with the ECA membership attached before your renewal date to avoid this issue???

Just call up your credit card company, tell them you lost the card so they'll reissue a new one with different numbers...

Why the hell should we be canceling cards when the issue is at ECA's end? We have to lie to the bank so ECA doesn't charge us for something that we didn't want in the first place? We should't be going through all this trouble because a corrupt non-profit organization is doing a bait and switch with its members.

Yeah, that's a bit much. Just challenge it if it ever comes up.

Maybe because this may not stop them from charging your card? Even if you change numbers, if they successfully charged your card before with authorization, they can do it again... this is why sometimes when you preorder stuff and then your card changes, the charges still go through.

Received this email today...

"TheECA: ECA Full Membership role expiration notice

This is your notice that your membership is about to expire. You will have 45 days to respond to this notice. Click here to update your billing address. Once you are finished please log into your profile to edit your membership status."

I canceled my membership earlier this year. Should I be worried that I will get charged? I tried logging into my account but it says my loginID is either blocked or has not been activated.

I got that as well. I ignored it since I had already cancelled and the card I used to create the account no longer exists.

I went a step further and reported my card stolen a couple months ago. I would love to see them try and charge it now.
