Re: Borderlands
Yep, really a sniper isn't anything special for my character, I just find it handy for distance and had found a good one early. A combat rifle would make more sense for, but I don't really like juggling my mods too much. So I focus on pumping up my shotgun instead and use a variety of those in most situations. Early on the Sniper was used a lot more though.

so soldier can use shotgun and sniper weapon? i think i will pop it in for a bit later and get started.
Say you have the Soldier and use a pistol. You may have a mod for "Team Extra Damage + 20" and Team +25 Shield" which is ok But the Hunter has mods that may say "+60 Pistol Fire Rate and + 11 Ammo Regeneration and +10 Damage" Same say with the Siren. The "Hellfire SMG's" are a must thruout the game and most everyone has one. However the Siren has mods that will add say "+40 SMG Damage and +25 Shield Boost". |

Yea...you can use any weapon but again some mods enhance certain types even more.

Re: Borderlands
With my Siren, I used the shotgun almost exclusively for the first 1/3 of the game until the SMG specialization really started to kick in.
If you prefer shotguns and assault rifles, then definitely go with a Solider class. Or have two characters, I don't care. |
Re: Borderlands
If you get a canon early, use nothing but that, once you get high enough proficiency you will be unstoppable. :P
Seriously though, the game doesn't really lay out what you should or shouldn't be doing, you get tons of loot and some of it won't apply to your character. You can kill the game by over analyzing which gun to use and swapping guns out for different types of enemies IMO. I'm sure I will need to do it more as I continue in Playthrough 2, but through the first, I never really found a ton of advantage by swapping between the different elementals instead of just sticking with the most powerful (that can be hard to determine though) |
Just played Borderlands for the 1st time!
so i played about 2 hours or so. really was having a good time. trying to dissect it all though which i think took a bit out of me. Leveled up to 4. don't know if that is good or not...
got a nice sniper gun, couple different repeaters, rusty machine gun, another that had like 92% accuracy, one that had 9 x2 damage. will i find out later how to increase those in terms of strength and stuff? can't do it now i believe. it makes a difference where on the enemy's body i hit them right? i got "Critical Hits" and thought those would kill enemies instantly, but it didn't. are those just more damage points? (did check the wiki on most this stuff as well). so basically in the beginning i do these missions for Dr. Zed, complete and go back to him for reward and next mission? just want to make sure i am on the right track. nice side track from Dead Space for awhile. might play a little more, but don't want to get too much ahead and leave DS behind as i am loving that. |
Re: Borderlands
Yeah, each enemy has a different critical location, it's just more damage.
|
Re: Borderlands
You can't change the guns at all. When we say "mods", we're talking about character mods. They're another type of item you'll get later.
Guns never change from when you find them. You'll have to choose if the next gun's fire rate or clip size increase is worth the decrease in accuracy, for example. |
Re: Borderlands
^ ah, ok. makes sense. guns stay the same, i just get many many many different ones (that have already set damage/accuracy/rate of fire/etc) throughout the game that i can use, try out, see if i like and keep or not.
how many guns will i eventually be able to carry with me at all times in my backpack and can put to the 1 of 4 slots and switch with Y button? |
Re: Borderlands
Backpack holds 42 slots, iirc. DLC may change this. It won't be just guns, though. Guns, shields, mods, and grenade mods will be in there.
|
Re: Borderlands
Tried Crawermax for the first time last night and successfully pulled off the ledge thing. I didn't have anything good to hit his back with, and it was really late, so I eventually just quit. Now I can't get the ledge thing to work today when I actually have time to put into it. :(

Re: Borderlands
ok, i'm hooked! i knew i shouldn't have started this. now, i will never go back to Dead Space.
having too much fun running around, not knowing what the hell i'm doing and doing all these missions. killing skags, bandits, and now these little midget psychos! man they are tough. i unload round after round and they still keep coming. haven't figured out there critical hit yet so that may be the problem. but, where is all the money? i am level 6 and i got like no money. i bought some healths and shields, but i got like nothing. does this increase eventually? and when will i be and how do i open up more slots in my backpack? |
Re: Borderlands
Headshots.
Sell things you don't need for money. As you progress you'll find broken Claptraps you can get a Repair Quest from. Completing those quests grant you 3 backpack slots each. I think the first one in Sledge's Safehouse, iirc. |
Re: Borderlands
Money will come, I don't think I've ever purchased a health pack. You get your money from selling more than from cash laying around. Don't be afraid to sell good stuff. If you have a gun that's too high level for you, chances are you'll find another one by that time (though that's not a promise).
As for the back packs, if a clap trap asks for help, you should oblige. |
Re: Borderlands
i've been selling extra repeater guns, but they fetch nothing. it's funny i bought the health packs and never used them yet. by the time i need it or realize i can use it i am dead!
i guess it will all come in time you guys are saying. i only just got to Skag Gully and have to kill None-Toes, so i guess still in the beginning... |
Re: Borderlands
Yeah, I don't like them. Especially because they take up valuable back pack space.

Re: Borderlands
My biggest complaint about Borderlands was all the snipe hunting.
Have you got to those missions yet Scott? They are kind of early (but after Nine-Toes). |
Re: Borderlands
I wish New-U Stations were real :(

Re: Borderlands
You are still kind of in an extended tutorial. The NU stations will get more important eventually.
A few more friends got this last night, it's definitly a bigger blast playing with 4 dudes at once. I started up a Siren, so that's taking some adjusting too. |
Re: Borderlands
Then you haven't gotten to the snipe hunt bit yet. It is kind of a pain since it is a whole small quest line of ridiculous fetching, collecting, and such to actually catch the snipe.
Thankfully they are optional and only really important if you are a completionist. |
