Re: Thinking of finally nabbing an Xbox 360 or PS3
As far as this thread, if somebody makes a point of Blu-ray, then states the PS3 is leading because of it, it seems like an easy choice...
... now that the price point is finally where it needed to be all along.

I would go with Xbox 360 myself. I just bought one myself for the first time in August of 09 just before the price drop *sigh* and I love it! It's tons of fun. Plus you can stream netflix through it which is a major plus!

PSN does all that, and for free. Then again, I am pretty jealous that the 360 has Netflix support...

Did Sony start putting up demos for every PSN game now? Nearly every retail release? I didn't get that memo.
Actually, as a gamer, that is one glaring difference between the two services that never seems to be brought up. Demos are available to all Live users, but in the scope of things, that feature alone is worth the price of Live in comparison.

I am not seeing your point here in bashing the ps3 for content and features that are also available on the ps3.
And yes, live is usually 30 bucks, but It's hard to argue that buying playon for 30 or 40 bucks isn't a better deal to those who don't do online gaming and want to use their system for multimedia streaming.

I have both. Which one is better? They're both good in their own rights, but if you have any thoughts of playing online, get a 360. Yes, I know the PS3 is free and decent, but in this instance, you get what you pay for and the 360 just can't be beat for playing online.

I have had both, I currently just own a ps3. Online is online imo. As long as there isn't a ton of lag than what is the actual difference between the 2 really. I don't see hardly any lag on ps3, at least on too noticeable. Maybe I'm missing something but what is the draw to 360 that everyone is saying the online is better. I always thought they were pretty much the same.

Since headsets come standard with the system (and Live bundles, and the Chatpad) damn near every 360 user can get on and coordinate on team games. And yeah, yeah... double edge sword, you do get more asshats since everyone has a mic, but the positive far outweighs the negative on this one.
Also, not a huge deal, but since users host games you never have to worry about MS shutting down servers like you do on PSN. If you and a buddy want to pop in a game from 2001 to play online you can, whereas it's likely to have been shutdown on the Sony side. (I say not a huge deal because who really does this anyway outside of Halo 2? :lol)
A few other 'big' things are cross game play, cross game invites, parties and cross-game chat, none of which PSN can do. All of which are essential features, IMO.
Apples-to-apples, actually playing a game online (headset aside) is basically the same, its all the other little things that add up to make Live a far better online experience.

Re: Thinking of finally nabbing an Xbox 360 or PS3
Cross game party chat is also exceedingly useful for getting together your friends for a game. Just last night i was in a party with a few other folks coordinating when we were going to play Halo 3. I was in Rock Band, someone else was on the dashboard, and two other folks were playing Mortal Kombat. Everyone was playing a game they wanted to play and able to chat with a buddy and determine that in an hour everyone would switch to Halo.
Things like that sound goofy and like they aren't that big a deal.... until you are sitting at the dashboard for 10 minutes doing nothing hoping someone in a game will check their message that you want an invite. I <3 the Live service and would happily pay the full 50$ a year (even though i never actually pay that much).

I'm waiting to pick up the final revision of the Xbox 360 chipset, Valhalla. It's slated to come out in "late 2009". It apparently will include a combined CPU and GPU.

It's funny nobody cares to mention that you can share 99% of the PSN paid offerings with up to 4 additional users.
Paying just 20% of the retail price of downloadable PSN games/ addons is IMO a scale tipping feature.

Re: Thinking of finally nabbing an Xbox 360 or PS3
For the most part the pool of players on the 360 is going to be a lot larger on any given game since nearly every multi-platform release sells a lot better on the 360.

Fair enough. I didn't think of all the "extras"
I guess what I can glean from this thread and all the posts is this
For playing games, both systems are about the same. The cross platform is pretty close in most instances and both have some very good exclusives.
For online play 360 is king
For multimedia and music/video sharing ps3 is king.

Point me to a post. I can't recall a single time that I've brought up demos as a selling point to my knowledge. I don't mind eating crow, but I'm almost positive that I haven't, let alone multiple times like you are inferring.

I think as a value proposition, the PS3 slim is a no-brainer...especially now that they are the same price.
But the 360 does clearly have some things going for it...specifically XBLA and Netflix.

Except for the half that have a RROD or will get an RROD soon
See, I can make a pointless post that craps on one of the systems too
Unless someone can make a substantiated claim like above with oh, I don't know "proof" or at least some kind of reasoning that doesn't sound like drooling fanboy drivel.
The 360 and ps3 are both great systems for all the reasons that have been posted in this thread.

If you dont quit sweet talking me with words like 'embed', Mr. Glassdragon, I just may fall in love with you.
As I said earlier, I do much prefer my xbox 360 to my ps3. Not to 'fanboy drivel" standards (whatever the fuck that means) but to a moderate 3 to 4 hours a week. Family and responsibility prevent me from playing much more. I've had problems with lag on the ps3 online, I don't particularily like the controller, the menu layout, the awesome composite cables I got in the box for my 'high def, next gen' system, or the ridiculous dust collecting, eyesore that is the casing. I tried, I swear.
ps - who's groucho?

Re: Thinking of finally nabbing an Xbox 360 or PS3
I think the 360 is a fine system, but as I already own a PS3, I don't see enough differences/improvements to warrant getting one in addition to what I already have. Though it would be cool to play Banjo Kazooie again...
