I'm going to respectfully disagree - because unknown bands that made the main setlists on disc in previous games for the most part didn't really take off or jump to the mainstream - what chance will they have in a flooded marketplace accessible to a fraction of the players?

If he and his people could stub out the tracks the way RBN requires, then couldn't Led Zeppelin spear-head this entire operation?
You're targeting a very small audience there. Compared to an international launch of an exclusive disc, I don't think this would be the avenue Robert Plant would use to bring LZ to music gaming once and for all. Maybe some of his solo work, but not LZ. |

The only problem with that is that this is on 360s only and DLC only in the USA.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one with this problem. Fortunately my wife is pretty good on vocals, and is trying to learn drums, so I don't have to just do solo guitar the whole time.
Any other Austin RBers? That could actually be a fun get together. I'm down for an Austin DVDTalk RB get together. |

I don't know how much you can contribute Silversun's success to RB. I don't know if that's what you're suggesting but we'll run with it anyway because that gives me more to type. It may have contributed... but they just released a great album (Swoon) and already had a pretty strong following before their inclusion in the game -- it just wasn't a mainstream following. Swoon is clearly the best material they've produced to this point. Many of the songs are actually pretty radio friendly without alienating that old fanbase. I really really wish we'd start to see some of these new songs as DLC. These songs would sell CDs... whereas I'm not sure either of their tracks in RB are going to make anyone rush to iTunes for a full-album purchase. |

Id love to see it. Id love to see some of my favorite bands jump on-board but I just don't see it happening. (Hey, Don Dokken if you are listening to this, ... nevermind and just make the damn call!) |
Re: Rock Band: Official Thread
What? Read up on RBN. The process is started by the rights holders. Also HMX already said songs can and will move from RBN to the music store proper. LZ would move stores as well as platforms.
This just gives Robert Plant the ability to do the music part in-house. |

Isn't RBN the sort of thing that fits Robert Plant's anxiety over control of the master tapes? From what we've heard in the past, he's been reluctant due his possessiveness of the physical media, not the rights or the revenue.
Personally, while I think RBN is a great "idea" it will be about as successful as GHTunes. People bitched and moaned about the free RB20 because they were "unknown artists" but several of those bands were far bigger than any of these they've listed. |

I wouldn't say I have my finger on the pulse of pop culture or anything, but I heard Lazy Eye before they were announced for Rock Band 2 - I was thinking more along the lines of bands like An Endless Sporadic or Abnormality that never got any radio play before their song showed up in these games.

And isn't RBN essentially a digital distribution? Correct me, but there's a big conflict I see. |

Well I think it's Jimmy Page and not Plant who has the physical masters but that was definitely the issue. I don't think he was willing to let them leave his house.

A bands popularity isn't the sole gauge on how much a RB DLC song sells. There are plenty of people that simply buy songs that look/sound like they would be fun or challenging to play. |
Re: Rock Band: Official Thread
I thought GHTunes was pretty awful. Lots of MIDI-style crap. Does anyone really create or download a lot of stuff off of there?
I think RBN will be really interesting since it will be actual music and it will give a venue for more indie artists to get their songs into the game. I know that a lot of people only want to play music that they are already familiar with, but I like to try new things. |

I downloaded exactly like 2 things on there. One of them being the Bubble Bobble theme. It is a gimmick. I hope RBN is better implemented.
The biggest unknown for me is the quality of the charts. At least there is one company that bands are going to be outsourcing to for RBN and that is Rhythm Authors who were trained by HMX employees. |

They are going to be two completely separate marketplaces. Personally I absolutely love the idea of getting all this lesser known bands into Rock Band. Just because they aren't well known, doesn't mean they aren't good. If I had a band, I'd be fucking ecstatic about the news of RBN. It has great potential for increasing band exposure and the potential for bands to get "big" without even needing a label.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread
I hope this RBN thing catches on for some bigger acts that just haven't been asked - specifically there is a lot of Canadian rock I'd love to see in RB but bands like Billy Talent, Sloan and The Tragically Hip would probably have to hire people themselves to make this happen since outside of Canada they aren't nearly as huge, so I doubt Harmonix would approach them on their own.

More RBN news:
Nirvana’s “Bleach” on “Rock Band”? Sub Pop Looks to Code Catalogs Into Playable Tracks Music video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero have become the new stars of American culture. But fans of cult or indie music like, say, the Melvins, can’t exactly inhabit their inner Buzz because rhythm game music catalogs offer a tiny fraction of recorded music. This week however, the newly announced Rock Band Network introduced the option for anyone with a tune to try to get their songs added to the Rock Band shop. Legendary Seattle indie label Sub Pop has already said they’re interested and many labels are sure to follow. Sub Pop A&R executive Tony Kiewel is an avid Rock Band aficionado and said the storied label is investing in equipment this week to turn songs into playable tracks. Sub Pop albums like Nirvana’s Bleach or the new record from the Shins could be part of Rock Band by Fall should the game accept the tracks for sale. “This conceivably could be the opening of the floodgates,” Kiewel said. “We always had the feeling that the people at Harmonix, they’re all in bands, they’re music people and I think it actually broke their hearts that we couldn’t work it out to get our stuff into the queue faster.” Kiewer said Sub Pop is looking at converting its entire catalog, which includes early Nirvana, the Postal Service and the Shins, into Rock Band-ready tracks for sale in the new Rock Band Network store. “You’d be crazy not to make your stuff available and sell it if you can,” he says. “My fears are we haven’t actually used the software yet and audio multi-tracking software in general is pretty complex.” With 8 million units and more than 50 million downloads sold, Rock Band appears poised to become a full-on music platform, and the new Beatles game — due September 9th — is sure to bring in an entirely new demographic. The game is creating new production costs heretofore unknown for Sub Pop, says Kiewel. “It’s all up in the air,” he says. ”This’ll be a ‘release’ as far as I’m concerned. This’ll be another format alongside vinyl and CD.” |
Re: Rock Band: Official Thread
I would flip to have Bleach in RB.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread
This shit could get really expensive if the songs are done well. If Sub Pop really did their whole catalog and the quality's up there with the songs Harmonix does, I'd for sure be getting stuff from The Postal Service, Afghan Whigs, Band of Horses, The Shins, Sleater-Kinney, Nirvana, Wolf Parade, Fleet Foxes and Flight of the Concords. There's another dozen or so bands I'd probably buy songs from as well.
|
Re: Rock Band: Official Thread
Flight of the Conchords in Rock band would be a dream come fucking true... NEED IT!
Just rented the Country Track Pack and luckily I opened the case before I left the store, as someone had put the Wii booklet in the 360 case - I wasn't leaving the store without the 360 booklet. They found it in the Wii case but I think an employee was trying to be sneaky and make sure no one redeemed the code before they did (it only arrived to the store today)... just redeemed the code no problem, so I'm happy - I can live with $9 for those tracks. |
Re: Rock Band: Official Thread
If he wants to put his money where his mouth is, now Rob Thomas can get those Matchbox 20 songs that we have all been lusting for.
