Of course it's a UK magazine, so it's like $10 an issue because of the conversion rate.

Yep, Game Informer is pretty awesome, no need for me to add EGM. Cool to see it come back though.

Glad to have it back. But they just don't have the exclusives that G.I. has had over the past couple of years.

This, of course, is the other problem with print mags (well, I guess it affects online mags too, but I"m sure there's more pressure on print mags to get news early)... not the exclusives themselves, but the pressure to give great reviews to those exclusives, and all the shadiness therein.

Which is why I love metacritic....There were MANY game developers giving each other high fives when EGM went under. There is an effort on their part to give magazines (and now websites) that give "a slight push" on review scores early access to their games. The smart magazines don't sell all of their reviews, just a percentage of them, so they can still have the 5's and 6's to show their "integrity" All the years of work on game developers parts (not all of them mind you) to destroy magazines like EGM, have been a waste with sites like Metacritic. Now they are trying to give preorder bonuses with their games to get you before reviews come out.

With movies, Harry Knowels at Aintitcool is the biggest whore of all. He LOVES to put up reviews from time to time like his Terminator Salvation review, that BLASTS a movie. That way you can tell he is not a "whore" But for every Terminator Salvation review there are 10 Godzilla reviews that are bought and paid for by the movie studios. I love it when you see advertising on his site for a movie, and all the "early screening reviews" of that movie are glowing as is his review.

EDGE is a thinking man's video game magazine...which is probably why I don't care for it. It is just like reading Time. No fun at all and just business. No major splashy pages...normal normal pix of the screenshots. No goofy letters in that section section or smart-ass responses. I like a little humor in my magazine at least (lame or not). EDGE takes video games way to seriously for me to enjoy it.

Edge is also really expensive, isn't it, even without taking into account the importing costs. I think a normal sub in the UK is like quarterly payments of 10 pounds. I'm not sure a gaming magazine could survive here with that kind of pricing.

Re: EGM to Return

All the import mags are expensive. But Edge doesn't throw any extras in like the others do such as strat guides, cheat books, dvds full of trailers and review, etc. But Edge is thick as hell. Lots of content for your money. I saw one today at B&N and it was mucho thicko.

Re: EGM to Return

Woah, forget the 10 pounds a quarter, subscribing locally from Amazon is like 100 bucks. How much does an individual issue cost?

I wonder sometimes how the magazine industries are in other places. I sometimes drool at the thick Japanese Videogame magazines and all the pretty pictures inside, but the per magazine price is also pretty high. Then you have the monthly Japanese Hobby magazines, which really, really put the domestic toy magazines to shame...

Re: EGM to Return

I believe it is around $9.99 an issue from B&N or BAM. It may even be as much as $12.99.

Re: EGM to Return

I'm glad to see it return, I can remember reading it along side Gamepro during my younger years. Right now though I'm fine with my subscriptions to Game Imformer, PLAY & OXM. I just like having the good old paper rags in my hand while on the crapper, what can I say.

I'd rather have Computer Gaming World/Games for Windows back. EGM was good when I was 12 and some of the issues were like 400 pages long. Some of those issues were downright epic. It got too cut down in it's later days.

Re: EGM to Return

It's now more affordable for US subscribers because they have a US distributor.

https://www.imsnews.com/ims_subscribe.php?pubid=97
Edge Magazine - 1 Year (13 Issues) - $75.00
Edge Magazine - 2 Years (26 Issues) - $135.00
Edge Magazine - Quarterly Payment - $19.99
Even for other international subscribers, the pound has dropped a lot in value against most currencies, especially the Euro. So it may be a little cheaper than you expect. I let my subscription lapse for a year but renewed just recently because of that.

I don't buy Edge for the latest reviews, although, like Game Informer, their reviews are usually pretty timely. It's for the in-depth 4 page interviews, previews, thoughts on the industry etc. Perfect for the toilet, or just when you want to put your eyes to paper rather than a LCD screen. Also, it's the type of reading you just won't find on the internet. Most just aren't prepared to click through pages of text in their browser, and most gaming websites have caught on to that.

It doesn't have the wit or frat boy humour of an EGM but I get more than enough of that on internet message boards and gaming websites. No need for anyone to cut down trees to print that shit out for me.

The best game magazine for my money was Next Gen. Too bad they got canceled during the launch of GCN/Xbox.

According to Kotaku...

Those of us with outstanding subscriptions to Electronic Gaming Monthly may finally be on the receiving end of a suitable replacement, should you be a horny hetero male who doesn't like actual nudity in your magazines and enjoys skimming Maxim.

While EGM folded as a print publication earlier this year, interest in the magazine and 12 to 24-month long subscriptions didn't. Rather than issue a refund, subscribers appear to be getting a replacement in Maxim. The 14-year-old men's mag does cover video games in addition to breasts, so readers won't be at a total loss. But given Maxim's preference of 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand to Killzone 2, we're not sure how well-served in reviews they'll be.

I have yet to receive my replacement copy of Maxim, but reader Jordan has. His first replacement issue comes with a note that subscribers can instead opt for a pro-rated refund for the balance of their EGM subscription.

It's doubtful that balance can be transferred to the attempt at reviving Electronic Gaming Monthly by magazine founder Steve Harris. But, hey, boobs.
Looks like my Maxim sub is gonna go up by another 6 years

Re: EGM to Return

I miss those issues were they would do countdowns and such like PC Gamer's 50 greatest games of all time. Thick and fun to run. I don't want to click through 50 webpages to read the same thing. I spend enough time on the PC as it is.

You'd think it'd be at least a little risky to just replace EGM subs with Maxim...

My sub was almost out, so, mercifully, this is my first and last Maxim magazine (got it today).
