:(

Fail rate is NOTHING like the 360. I've had my near-launch model for over two years now and it runs beautifully. Quiet as a whisper and super-reliable. No console is failure-proof, but I'm very happy with the build quality of the PS3, especially compared to the early 360s. Besides, worst-case, it's only $300 for the newer model and you could swap out the HDD. Not much to worry about really.

Mine's a near-launch unit as well...a 60 GB.

It's just turning into a bit of a trend, as he's the third person I know to have one crap out...fifth if you count talkers.

I know there are stories out there, but my near launch 60GB is still fine as well. I use it in an open TV stand where it gets plenty of ventilation and I clean it out with compressed air every couple of weeks. No major issues with it yet, but if it does happen it will have given me many thousands of hours of use before failing. My less than a year old 360 on the other hand has been freezing on me frequently and is probably on its way to RRODville at any moment. I will still take the PS3 quality over the garbage Microsoft sells.

You Sony people make me  Bitch and bitch about the 360 failing and how it's a piece of shit, but when the PS3s start crapping out it's okay because you got plenty of use out of it and "worse case scenario you're only out $300" for a Slim, because you can swap your hard drive... because that's better than dropping <$200 for an Arcade unit and swapping external hard drives. rotfl

Welcome to the other side of the fence. Dare I say [cough]hypocrites?[/cough] Now you know why so many stick with the 360. We've gotten "many of thousands of hours of use" out of them and will continue to do so after the free repairs.

I've had all of them since the PS2, heavy use, and none of them have died on me. A few issues here and there, but nothing major. And I'm an Xbox fanboy but the playstation consoles always seem to have less issues...

(although I don't play a lot of games in the PS3... oops!)

My PS3 has never had any problems. It also cares about animals and helps old ladies across the street.

I've got no beef against MS, and hardly a "hypocrite", it's just a fact : the 360 has a fail rate unseen in several generations of consoles. Now the Jaspers seem pretty sound, but those older ones had a HUGE fail rate, promping Microsoft to admit it had a near-100% fail rate. No way that PS3 is anywhere close to that. I'd be okay with the PS3 failing eventually since I'm always leaving it on accidentally, both because it can be turned on accidentally by justiling the controller and the remote and because it's so quiet that I may not realize it's on for a few hours despite being in the same room as it.

Don't get me wrong I am not excusing the YLOD problems some are having. The problem I have with the 360s is everyone I know that has had one fail (at least 50 repairs among people I know) is they happen so soon after buying one or getting a refurb (and yes Jasper may have finally solved this, but it is too late for those of us with older consoles). If my PS3 died within the first year I would consider it a piece of crap, but mine is chugging along since close to launch and has easily 5000 hours on the hardware without an issue. No one I know with a 360 can make that claim and while it is great MS is fixing them for free I know plenty of people that bought new 360 arcades because they got tired of sending the fucking things in every 3 months and in one case that arcade has already died. I don't know as many people with PS3s, but none of them have horror stories like this.

My PS3 was used to render Toy Story in real time for the recent re-release.

To be fair only the PS2 had that kind of power.

Wow, I sounded like a douche this morning. It is funny though. A few anecdotal cases of PS3s dying brings out the defenders while a similar post in a 360 thread will bring out people's RROD stories.

Statement of fact: It is possible to say something positive about the PS3 without being a Sony fanboy or defender.

I was just voicing my concern that my two closest RL friends with PS3s both had theirs die this year (a 60GB like mine and a BC 80GB). It's a very small and anecdotal sample, but it still makes me cringe a bit every time I turn it on. The failure rate of anything is 100% given enough time.

It just has to last long enough for me to get nostalgic about it, turn it on, play it, and realize nostalgia is best left alone.

So about 20 years.

 My Atari 7800 still works perfectly. I couldn't kill my original Atari 2600 from 1981 so I finally just gave the damn thing away years ago. I wish I still had it but since the 7800 was backwards compatible, oh well.

[old man]They just don't make consoles like they used to. [/old man]

I think it's been well established that devices without optical drives last much better than those with one.

I think that right now, it's only available if you preorder the game. I got mine from GameStop on Friday.

When does the District 9 Blu-ray come out? How about the GoW Collection? I honestly don't know. I was under the impression that as of right now, the pre-order is the only way to get the demo.
