When Engadget tested the slim it did use a lot less power, but it ran at the same 106 degrees the original PS3 ran at during BD playback so it isn't any cooler. The bitstreaming is nice if you have a receiver that can do the decoding though honestly I have never noticed any jitter or anything else wrong with PS3 decoding.

It would be my main (only one I'll buy) Blu-Ray player.

Sorry, I meant to say the fat PS3 uses more power. Thought it ran hotter, but sounds like it doesn't.

I personally like the look of the fat one better. And in response to it being your main blu-ray player, that's great either way you go. But depending on your receiver setup, the bitstreaming of the audio codecs could play a role in your decision.

I don't have an answer for that one. I actually had a problem with Mad Men Season 2 Disc 3. Sometimes, it would load, other times it'd fail. Regardless, it always locked up at the same point during playback. The disc was flawless to the naked eye. I exchanged it, and the replacement worked just fine.

So is the latest PS3 firmware revision (3.1) stable and problem-free? I never updated to 3.0 and when I attempted to log in to the Playstation Store last night it told me a software update was required, so I just declined.

So, I was going to buy the PS3 Slim, but I see the 80GB model is being offered with a free DUALSHOCK 3 controller. Is there any reason the 80GB model is less desirable than the slim? I don't anticipate filling up either HDD anytime soon or needing a 2nd controller ($~55) right away.

make sure you sign up for sonyrewards.

if you get the card, you can get almost enough points for a free controller by following this:

Do you mean 3.01? Or is this another update after it?

Posts are limitied to like 65,000 characters and the mods frown on post-count padding. So we really can't go into them all here.

I'm reading that some people are still having issues with firmware update 3.01, so I don't think I want to update my PS3 yet. Is there any way I can sign into the Playstation Store without the "required" software update it is asking me for? Sure would like to download the free DLC for Batman: AA ...

I havent gotten the prompt to update to 3.01...

Is there a way to check what I have?

It wasn't forced. Just go to System Update. That should tell you.

Damn, I guess I'll just have to wait till the next firmware update then. I hope the free Batman: AA DLC sticks around till then.

I think it's under System Info or something. You probably wouldn't get prompted for the 3.01 update because it's not mandatory. I think it was 3.00 that was mandatory, but since I haven't updated my firmware in about a month or so, it's probably prompting me to update to 3.00.
