Microsoft is inviting Xbox Live Silver members to try out the newly-launched Facebook, Twitter, and Last.FM for the Xbox 360 during the upcoming Free Xbox Live Weekend. Between the new social features, the upcoming season of 1 vs 100, and Halo Waypoint, there's a lot happening on Xbox Live that you can't participate in without an Xbox Live Gold membership. Whether you are broke, indifferent, or simply averse to paying $50 a month to play games online, you'll be able to give these new features a spin when Microsoft hosts Free Xbox Live Weekends later this month. Everyone except Europe will have full access to all Gold membership benefits from November 20th to the 23rd. |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
Saw this on CAG and didn't see it here so I figured I would post it. The GamerTagRadio forums apparently received 200 codes to download the Bayonetta demo early. All you have to do is sign up and post a reply; haven't received my code yet but other CAG's are reporting it to work.
Here's the link to CAG - Link and heres the link to the GamerTagRadio forum topic - Link |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
I believe Dead Space will be $10 on BF at Walmart. They had a bunch of games with blue stickers on them. Since GTA4 had a sticker, I'm assuming all the stickered games will be $10

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
I'm digging the free Gold membership, specifically using Facebook and last.fm. Though I've been scrobbling for years, I don't think I've ever used last.fm's streaming stations. They're pretty sweet.
Typing on Facebook is pretty tedious using the controller, though. I can't get Twitter to work, though. It prompts me to pay for a Gold membership every time I try to access it, whereas Facebook and last.fm took me automatically to their services after the necessary downloads. Weird. EDIT: Twitter's working for me now. |

Live is free this weekend?
Time to turn on my PS3, oh wait... |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
Long-time PS3 owner, and I finally got a 360 Arcade ($100 Amazon sale). So far, so good. My first impressions are as follows:
- I got it hooked up borrowing the HDMI from my PS3 and running a 20 ft LAN cable from my office (curse them for lack of Wi-Fi). - I didn't know the controller used batteries. I guess that's good since I'll probably only have one controller, but it's hardly convenient. - The shape of the controller is terrific, but I don't like the shape and height of the thumbsticks. - Let's boot this thing up...hmmm...quieter than I'd heard...maybe quieter than my PS3. - The first thing that came up was avatars. I wasn't expecting them to be so much like Miis, and I'm almost embarrassed that I made one. - I wonder if I can change the background/menu colors. That green is pretty hard on the eyes. - Signing up for Live was fairly painless, and I got some variation of "frizby", so  - Perhaps I'm just used to it, but I find the PS3 XMB a bit more elegant to navigate...still cross-game invites and chat sounds pretty good. - Tons of demos I want to play, and I want several Arcade titles. I'm going to need a hard drive soonest. - Cool...Facebook. Oh...nevermind. Web browser and keyboard is a better solution. - I only downloaded Facebook and a system update, but this thing downloads MUCH faster than my PS3. - Played a bit of Gears, which I borrowed from a friend...probably the exclusive I was most looking forward to checking out other than Mass Effect. I wish I was enjoying it more, but it's probably not fair to play it right after Uncharted 2, which borrows some of its mechanics and improves on them quite a bit. The settings are cool, but the story and characters are awful. :( - Overall, I like the machine, and even if I just use it to play Valve and Bethesda games, it will have been worth it. |

A lot of us wired our original Xbox so it became a non-issue when getting a 360. Is there a way to move your router/modem setup to the main room and make your PC wireless? - I didn't know the controller used batteries. I guess that's good since I'll probably only have one controller, but it's hardly convenient. On the flipside, inconvenient is running down the Dual Shock 3 controller and having to be wired while you play. I would argue being able to pop in fresh batteries is more convenient. - The shape of the controller is terrific, but I don't like the shape and height of the thumbsticks. How so? Higher? Lower? If it's lower you can get some of those FPS Freeks. - Let's boot this thing up...hmmm...quieter than I'd heard...maybe quieter than my PS3. With games installed even the older systems are whisper quiet. I really need to record my PS3 because I swear it's like a jet engine. - The first thing that came up was avatars. I wasn't expecting them to be so much like Miis, and I'm almost embarrassed that I made one. They are decent. Not really as customizable as Miis in regards to features, but they are nice to have in certain games. 1 vs. 100 is great. - I wonder if I can change the background/menu colors. That green is pretty hard on the eyes. Go to the tab that has your game/system settings and what not, click the one that has your profile (second one over) go down to change theme. - Signing up for Live was fairly painless, and I got some variation of "frizby", so  - Perhaps I'm just used to it, but I find the PS3 XMB a bit more elegant to navigate...still cross-game invites and chat sounds pretty good. Elegant, yes. I think the 360 is easier to navigate though. There are a couple shortcuts as well. If you are on your Game tab, hitting the right trigger will take you directly to your friends list and back. Hitting the Right Bumper will scroll to the right quickly. - Tons of demos I want to play, and I want several Arcade titles. I'm going to need a hard drive soonest. Oh noes, haven't done the hard drive thing yet? You can get by, but you have four years of Arcade demos to get to, not to mention demos for nearly every major game as they are released. - Cool...Facebook. Oh...nevermind. Web browser and keyboard is a better solution. - I only downloaded Facebook and a system update, but this thing downloads MUCH faster than my PS3. Wait until you get a game update compared to how the PS3 handles it. It will blow your mind. Did you buy PAIN? Well the name is appropriate every time they update that game. The game would be Heaven on the 360. :( Yeah, the first Gears is good, but you've have two Uncharted games since the first Gears came out. Not really a fair comparison, but it's still a solid game. - Overall, I like the machine, and even if I just use it to play Valve and Bethesda games, it will have been worth it. |

Hopefully you enjoy it like the rest of us. I'm not 100% sure what it is about the sticks that doesn't feel right...they feel a bit too short, a bit too stiff and I don't like the concave shape. I guess I've spent too long with the GCN/PS2/PS3/DC. It looks like the controller could be plugged in. Will it charge rechargeable batteries when plugged in? I played Gears a bit more, and it's mostly an exercise in frustration. I'm basically playing "Pitch Black" right now, and dying a whole lot...and I hate these characters so much. I am really looking forward to upgrading Orange Box and Fallout 3, the first of which is more playable than rumored on PS3 and the latter of which is a mess on PS3. I'll get a hard drive when I come across a cheap one. |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
- No the controller won't charge rechargeables. You can buy (of course) a play and charge kit that has a special battery that charges via USB.
- Yes, the Kryll in Gears can be quite frustrating. Just gotta find those propane tanks to blow up for light. |

And FWIW, Gears2 kills the first one in every single way. |

Wow, those are the exact reasons why I love the 360's sticks and hate the Dualshock's sticks, which are far too loose (can't tell if I'm moving them sometimes), and my thumbs keep sliding off because they're convex.

If you don't like Gears 1, you won't like Gears 2. There are little differences that made me like 1 better, but they're very similar.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
Forgive me if this has been discussed because I haven't followed this thread as much lately...
What's the deal with the ZUNE Marketplace on LIVE now? I'm guessing it's now the Official movie rental/Buy area on LIVE with Netflix being the only other alternative. I did notice that some films like the new "Star Trek" are only for sale for 1200 points and can't be rented. What gives? Will "Star Trek" be available for rental on the ZUNE Marketplace at some point? I decided to give LIVE/ZUNE a whirl and rent a few movies and was kinda disappointed. |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
Chess, I see all your points but the one I have to disagree with most is the batteries issue. I hate that if your PS3 controller dies on you, you have to hook it up to a tiny cord if you want to play with it and charge it. I even have the extended cord and it is still too short for me. And I have never been able to get it to charge off a computer USB for whatever reason.
And the one thing that irks me the most...you have to have your PS3 on to charge your controller. Why can't they have it like the 360 and if you have it hooked up and then turn off your console, the USBs still stay on and you can charge it with your console off? It is so nice when my 360 controller dies, to just pop in a freshly charged pair of batteries. As far as Gears goes, I have always thought it was overrated. It is fun to run thru the co-op campaign with a buddy but I always found the MP to be dreadful and the controls sluggish. |

For what it's worth, the 360 controller has grown on me quite a bit in just a few nights. The concave sticks don't feel "odd" to me anymore and the shape of the controller is probably my favorite ever...the battery thing was just a surprise, and I've always kind of hated juggling batteries on the Wii. So I'm dying a lot, even after starting a new game on casual, and having to watch a bunch of asshole space-marine cutscenes over and over is really grating. It's the same reason I never had any interest in Killzone 2. |
