Must be some kind of DRM. Probably an encryption key tied to some ID of the machine itself, if I had to guess. What a pain though.

I have 2 360's but had not tried that before, as both have hard drives. I am somewhat interested in getting an MU though so my son and I can move our ID's between the boxes. I wish you could just sign into a box with your gamertag without having to recover the id (which I haven't done yet) and without needing the ID file. Its based on a live ID, you'd think it would be more portable. They should just make it so you can having a romaing ID if you choose, as long as its not logged in actively to more than one place at a time...

I've been disappointed about the ID thing from day one of the 360 launch. My friends all kept each others Gamertags on all of our original Xbox consoles so there was no worrying about forgetting a MU.

Here's hoping for an easy cloud storage solution on the next Xbox.

Does anyone have a 360 transfer kit they want to let me borrow? M$ has started charging like $13 for them.

I'll PayPal you cash to cover shipping, if you want.

Can you reuse them after they have been used once?

You just cant use them to move the same data twice. ie from 20 > 60 > 120, but they can be used multiple times.

Uhh, not sure about that. I'm pretty sure you can transfer your contents from a 20 -> 60 and then do a separate transfer from a 60 ->120 if you wanted. I transferred my contents from a 20 -> 120 and then a 120 -> 120 (bought an Elite) and it worked fine. The transfer process erases/reformats the contents on the old drive. I think that is what MS means when they state it is a "one time transfer".

And, I know for a fact you can only transfer contents from a smaller drive to a larger drive or from a same size drive to same size drive (120 -> 120). You can't transfer from a larger drive to a smaller drive.

After a try, with FIFA 10, I barely can hear the drive. I guess I'm just that used to playing from hard drive that went crazy when I couldn't.

Oh and that was in the bedroom where I'm using the TV speakers. So at least for sports that's not gonna be an issue.

Also, what bothers me about the game installs is that game saves do work on both consoles, so I would expect game installs to work too.

I'm hoping for a cloud solution too if it works better than the one used for the Sidekicks

A cloud solution for gamertag could work with a copy cached on the console (and without really long recover process). But for the install, I'd less hopeful. I strongly suspect they are using an encryption key that ties it to something unique within the console.

The 'really long" recover process is nothing like it used to be. It used to take over an hour to recover my tag, and now it takes like 10 minutes.

I've got close to 1000 licenses for it to verify, plus a fairly hefty gamerscore as well. My tag is about 25MB, I think.

Does anyone know when the fall update is happening? Also what are we getting for it? I know we are getting Facebook, Last FM and Twitter. Anything else?

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

So after getting banned for having a modded 360, bought an Arcade from Walmart during the $100GC deal.

Checked, and it is indeed a Jasper. Microsoft has improved this thing an amazing amount in the last few years and I have to commend them on that. It's now quiet! It runs way way cooler! The power brick is now half the size, light weight and reasonable!

Good work on their behalf and man it's about time I got a decent one.

Was it really modded, or was it just a false positive? If it wasn't truly modded, I believe there is a process through MS to get it unbanned.

It was modded. Modded it like a year ago and played maybe 1 burnt game on it. Thing wound up overheating regularly so I didn't care to take it back apart and un-mod it.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

I always cut my 360 off using the remote, but I've noticed that when I do it now, the light on the console will blink intermittently (like say once every 4 seconds) after I do for a while. Anyone know what that's about?

Also, I can cut my 360 on, but until I cycle to that video channel on my HDTV the thing won't actually go past the loading screen. I find that weird. Must have something to do with the HDMI cord sending the signal to the console that I'm not on the right channel or something.

Mine does that if I have downloads that haven't completed.

That's exactly it. Mine didn't do that when it was connected via Component cables.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

If you guys are using HDMI and have the other cable plugged in for optical, then you'll have that problem where it resets when you switch inputs.

The reason for this is it loses the HDMI signal and says "Oh. I should probably do component now" and has to reset to change the signals. If you're *only* plugged in HDMI, there shouldn't be a problem. Also, I think you can open up the other A/V plug and cut one of the wires (google it) and fix that as well.

What does cut your 360 on mean? You cut stuff off, not on.

I'm ONLY using a standard HDMI cable. No other cables (other than power and ethernet) are plugged in.

Mine does this as well (until I select the correct input) and is the only cable plugged in. It did not do it with component. I'm fairly certain my PS3 does the same thing. (I have a Hitachi HDTV)

So facebook is pretty cool on the 360. I also am using an old wireless Logitech keyboard that is so old one of the two connections on the receiver was a PS2 connection. Works like a charm. Thanks to a certain poster who recommend it.
