No kidding. Perhaps a particular Iron Maiden record would have been appropriate.

As for next week's DLC, I'll probably get Smooth Criminal and the Prong stuff. I've been listening to Prong since their first record was being used as intro music for Headbanger's Ball. Wish we were getting stuff from their 90's records, but this will do.

Aw jeez. That quote should get some Christian mothers' panties in a bunch.

You guys realize that's not a real press release, right? Shirley you must...

It isn't? I didn't click on the link, but it looked like one to me. Isn't it a bit late for April Fools?

edit: I guess after actually reading that excerpt instead of just scanning it, I would've noticed it pretty obviously isn't real. So what was the point? Must've been a slow news day.

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal!!

This gives me hope that some other great covers might make the game.

I guarantee these would all be big sellers:

Letters to Cleo - I Want You to Want Me
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - almost anything they've recorded
New Found Glory - King of Wishful Thinking
Yellowcard - Everywhere
Less than Jake - I Think I Love You
The Suicide Machines - What I Like About You
Ra- Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
LoveSick Radio - Jessie's Girl
I Hate Kate - Major Tom
Reel Big Fish - Kiss Me Deadly
Goldfinger- Just Like Heaven
Down By Law - Peace, Love, and Understanding
No Use for a Name - Turning Japanese
My Gay Uncle - Still the One

Why? I don't think any of those covers were Top 40 hits like Alien Ant Farm's cover.

True, but lots of songs in the game weren't big hits. The fact that they're willing to use a cover instead of the original is encouraging. Any of these songs would sell like crazy. The originals are well-known, but these versions are much more appropriate for the game, as the drum/guitar charts would be great.

There's also that little bit about Michael Jackson always needing money so he'll take whatever he can get (cover tune or not in the game). I also don't see this setting a precedent.

BTW pinata, you dug Ghost Hounds, right? They have three singles up on Amazon. No full album yet, but they do have samples of a full album on their site.

Honestly, I've never heard of one of the bands listed above. Maybe it's just me being old school.

its because most of them are pop-punk bands from the "Punk Goes...." CDs.

I can't answer why Destructoid decided to throw that together. Probably because it was obvious "milestone" to make a joke about.

I merely reposted it for the same reason. That being said, we hit 500 on 12/04/2008 and 666 on 4/30/2009. Think we'll hit 1,000 by year's end?

Dude, I love a lot of the bands you just listed, but I can guarantee that almost none of those bands' covers would be big sellers. This thread is proof of that. If Me First's cover of "Take it on the Run" had shown up as DLC instead of REO's, there'd be hell to pay.

Good point. However, some of these originals wouldn't be appropriate for the game, while the covers would. Best example is Boys of Summer by the Ataris or I Think I Love You by Less Than Jake. Plus everyone's heard the Atari's version. You couldn't turn on the radio a few summers back without hearing it.

But once again the example you give was a cover but was also a Top 40 hit. It would probably sell okay but the other you have mentioned would not just due to lack of recognition for that cover.

Personally I despise most covers unless they bring something new to the table (i.e. new arrangement). Most do not.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

I've never heard anything from the Ataris or Less Than Jake. Music is weird, you expect everyone to know & like what you know & like. There are plenty of songs released as DLC that get these boards excited while I roll my eyes, yet I drooled for the Feelgood album while many bashed it or just grabbed 1 or 2 songs.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about...these are some songs that I would LOVE to play on RB, but few have heard them I'm sure:

Shame on the Night - Dio
Just Walk Away - Dokken
Crying in the Rain - Whitesnake
Diary of a Madman - Ozzy
When the Smoke is Going Down - Scorpions
Hole in my Wall - Warrant
Paradise - Tesla
Mudkicker - Skid Row
Giving Yourself Away - Ratt
Bridge or Damaged - Queensryche
Mr. Speed (and about 100+ others) - KISS

While this would be a dream come true for me, most people probably never heard of this stuff. Unless you're talking about mainstream music, it's hard to please the masses. The recent Jane's Addiction album is a perfect example. Some people went nuts, while others were like WTF?? ...yet the No Doubt pack seemed to get a pretty big response. I personally don't like/listen to No Doubt, but even I DL'd about half the pack just because I knew the popular songs, and I do enjoy playing them. I would love to see DLC be released every week in this format - 1 'popular', 1 'newer/alternative', and 1 'classic' rock song. Anything else thrown in would be gravy (for some) like country, dance/pop, metal, etc...

Totally forgot it was Sunday! Been working on the house all day. Here's what you've all been waiting for.. The new challenge!

DVDTalk Challenge #10
Go Your Own Way

A new type of challenge emerges!

The Songs:
Fleetwod Mac - Go Your Own Way

The Challenge: This challenge is open to drummers and guitarists/bassists. The goal of the challenge is to get the highest score while maintaining the lowest streak!

How Long: 1 Week. Challenge ends 12AM EST on Monday, 05/11/09. Submissions can be made by sending me a PM with screenshots.

Still figuring out exactly how to score this one. I'll open the floor for suggestions. Here's what I've thought of so far.

A) Just go by lowest streak. If two people have the same streak, then score is the tiebreaker.

B) Some type of percentage multiplier? Take the total notes possible and give a reverse multiplier (with a max of say 2x). Therefore, if you have a 1 streak, your overall score is doubled. But if you FC the song, your score is multiplied by 0, thus making you a bona fide loser in this challenge.

Walker Boh 05-03-09 09:15 PM

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

How about score divided by streak?

That's what my formula is! :)

I just had a way more complicated way of saying it. Heh.

Bejesus, Kevad. That's some serious scoring on a couple of pretty challenging songs. Even though Girl's Not Grey is only rated as a 3 difficulty, I found it really difficult to keep a decent streak alive because of the irregular kick rhythm.

How many drummers competed? I was pretty disappointed with my scores and certainly didn't expect to be in the top three...

There were just 4 entries for this one. I've decided that I'll just be posting all the scores from now on (instead of just a "Top 5").

It seems that the "different" challenges like the one before this one "One Way or Another" got a good bit of interest in them, so I'll try to keep doing stuff like that (as evidenced by this week's).

Thanks for this challenge. Somehow, I had actually never run across the AFI track during the game, so it was great to play through it a few times! Seems like that's an interesting side effect of a large catalog. I often run across songs I've only played a couple of times.
