See Jeremy's note. You need to switch to MS Points. I just went ahead and tried and it worked for me, trying to download the game now.

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread

I tried this on my account and my girlfriend's account at essentially the same time. It worked on my account (which has a credit card attached) but did not work on my gf's account (with no credit card attached) even with switching to MS points.

Edit: Tried it with my second account that does have a CC attached and it didn't work. Must be dead. Got in right in time with my main account.

It's likely Gold exclusive, does that explain it?

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread

There are a lot of rumors flying around right now that tomorrow MS is going to announce free games added to Gold memberships, basically copying PS+. This could be a switch that got flipped a little early.

MS confirmed that Fable 3 is the first of the free games for gold members, so it isn't a glitch.

And they didn't even mention it during the conference?

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread

Microsoft doesn't have a game subscription model like Sony, and with PS Plus, with every "free" game purchase, there's an acknowledgement that you can only play the game when a member of PS Plus that you have to agree to. So yeah, here the game would have to be yours to keep (until your 360 breaks, then you're fucked).

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread

From
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/...ox360E3PR.aspx
As a message of thanks to the millions of Xbox fans around the world for their passion and loyalty, Microsoft announced that every qualifying Xbox Live Gold member — new or existing — will receive two free Xbox 360 game downloads per month starting July 1 until Dec. 31, 2013, including popular titles “Halo 3” and “Assassin’s Creed II.” And to celebrate E3 in the month of June, Xbox Live Gold will receive a free download of “Fable III.”[3] In addition, for a limited time gamers can get a Day One 12-month Xbox Live Gold membership and play “Killer Instinct: Round One,” with the exclusive Shadow Jago character, on Xbox One. Players will also receive a commemorative Day One membership card.

[3] “Games with Gold” free games offer available 6/10/13-12/31/13 for paid Gold members only. Xbox 360 games (selected by Xbox) available for free download from Marketplace only during specified half-month window; available games may vary by country. Kinect and/or hard drive required for some games.
The press release doesn't say the games are "yours to keep," even if you drop Gold later, but then again it doesn't say the games aren't yours to keep.

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread

From Xbox Wire:
http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/e3-marc-whitten
Games with Gold: Beginning in July, we will release two free games per month to Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360. This includes favorites like “Halo 3” and “Assassin’s Creed II.” And it starts right now, with the download of “Fable III,” yours to keep on Xbox 360.***

***“Games with Gold” free games offer available 6/10/13-12/31/13 for qualifying paid Gold members only. Xbox 360 games (selected by Xbox) available for free download from Marketplace only during specified half-month window; available games may vary by country. Some titles may only be available for download by account holders 18+. Kinect and/or hard drive required for some games
So, Fable III, at least, is to keep. Not certain by the wording if this extends to the other games, but maybe.

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread

What's the harm in them not being "to keep"? The games are ancient, they aren't forward-compatible with the X1. It's barely a benefit. They didn't even have to write any code for this, just change a price or two every 30 days.

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread

They are comparing it to the PS+, if you are not longer a member you can't play the game.

I'm not sure but I don't think the Xbox 360 has that kind of DRM in games. Meaning it doesn't matter if you cancel Gold, once you have downloaded the game it's yours forever (*).

It's hard to say there's "harm" in a free bonus for Xbox Live Gold, but it's just useful to know.

For example, let's say someone has Gold for the next 6 months, and is going to grab most to all of these freebies, but doesn't have time to play them until the new year. Will that person have to extend their Gold membership in order to play the games, or could he lose his Gold membership and still play all the freebies he downloaded while he had Gold?

Re: The Video Game Deals Thread

Right, I find it dubious that they'd implement some new rules about Gold being active to play these handful of ancient games just because they were "purchased" while free as part of this revolving promotion.

If it on the X1, then sure they would make those safeguards. This is just something to sustain interest in XBLG on the 360 as it begins its slow fade away.

To be fair, I don't think the PS3 had that kind of DRM in games either, until they launched PS+. Sony likely added the capability in a firmware update prior to launching PS+.

The 360 has had a number of capabilities added to it via firmware updates, so going for PS+ style functionality is a possibility. On the other hand, they're launching the Xbox One, and this free games promotion appears temporary (through December), so MS might not bother to do anything more complicated than changing the price of a game to free for Xbox Gold members for a period of time.
