DVD Talk Video Game Draft Thread

We played this game a few years ago before the current generation of consoles. With the recent Sheep threads, I thought I would try to get it going again.
The idea behind the game is that all the players “draft” a 10 Video Game collection, and then square off March Madness style to see who has the best “virtual collection” by being judged by votes from other DVD Talk members. By draft, I mean selecting one game at a time to add to your collection in turn (like in sports, or in grade school where captains would pick teams)
1. Draft picks are "first come, first serve."

2. Rounds will begin every 24 hours at 12 PM EST (excluding weekends). The DVDTalk server clock will be the official timekeeper, so watch your timestamps! Any picks made outside the official time will be ignored. You'll need to repost them within the correct time frame.

3. For each round, players can draft one video game for one console or portable system (for example: “Super Mario Bros. – NES”).

4. Once everybody has drafted 10 video games, we’ll have a bracket tournament. You’ll be randomly paired up, and the forum will vote on who has the best collection.

5. Restrictions:

a. You can only draft two video games per system.

b. Computer games are ineligible

c. Compilation games are ineligible. Compilation games are defined as games in which there is no default game to play as opposed to games where additional games are available as special features.

d. You cannot draft a video game that as already been drafted by drafting a “special edition” of that game and vice versa. (for example: If a contestant has drafted “Doom 3 CE - XBox”, you cannot draft “Doom 3 - XBox”). The same game can be drafted for different systems, however.

e. Game must be released at time of selection. Release dates are determined by gamestop.com.

6. The field will be limited to 16 players. If we do not reach 16 contestants, there may be several players who receive a “bye” in the first round of voting.

7. If you miss two rounds in a row, you may be replaced with an alternate. Alternates will enter the game in a "first come, first serve" fashion when this occurs, and will "inherit" the existing collection. But once a game is taken there are no circumstances where it will be reentered in the pool.

8. SPECIAL NOTE: This game will take approximately two weeks to play (weekdays only). Please do not sign up if you don’t think you can play the entire time.

9. Draft picks will be tracked in the second post of this thread.

10. After all the “collections” have been drafted, the bracket tourney will begin, and continue for four rounds until we have a grand champion.

11. Good Luck!
I will attempt to answer all questions and make all rulings promptly and will be participating. Draft will commence today and every subsequent day at 12 PM EST.

Is the object to pick games you think would garner the most votes? What are we voting on? I ask because what if someone picks Goldeneye and it goes up against Bioshock. I'm not sure how the voting would go, but would Goldeneye receive less votes because it is older and doesn't hold up as well now compared to an FPS that is newer? Or would it not matter since people would be voting based on the memory of the game when they played? Just curious since the game sounds interesting.

This. Everyone else votes for whatever reasons they want. If you are drafting a collection, your best bet is to pick a "team" that you think will get the most votes. It can get very tough in the latter rounds of drafting if we get 16 teams.

Why are PC games excluded? They're video games too.

I just used the same rules as last time. I think that PC games were excluded because of the experience can vary so wildly depending on your rig, mods used, etc. Also, people are generally more familiar with console games. If enough people want to include up to 2 PC games, we can change that rule.

Some tips for those who didn't participate last time:

- Make a master list of games you would want on your list. This needs to be at least 100 games. Order the list from best to worst games.
- come to this thread at 11:59 EST with your copy/paste skills ready.
- enter your #1 choice. If someone else posts it before you, go to #2.

So in 15 minutes? Seems like a short amount of time to get a list together. What does a round encompass? Just your first pick? So if you post first, that's it until day #2?

Yes, you get one pick a day. The reason I suggested putting together a list is that other people will pick the games you are thinking of rather quickly. I lost my first 40 picks by round 3 last time.
