does playon do divx?
doesnt look like the media center extender portion does natively

I will definitely rent it. Even though they get repetitive i kind of dig those hack and slash games.

I am not sure if PlayOn does divx or not but I know TVersity does (and it is free but not as easy to use as PlayOn). I did however think there was a dashboard update that allowed you to natively stream divx.... was i wrong?

I tried LotR Conquest and the single player looked like it would be fun. But then I read that it is very short (http://forums.xbox.com/25211212/ShowPost.aspx), so my excitement disappeared. I really didn't like the multiplayer too much.

As I've blown through 5600 points in the last couple of weeks on various things, the question comes to mind: What's going to happen to all this DLC when the next XBox comes out? Will I be able to play all my Arcade games and Rock Band tracks on it, or will all that stuff just have to stay on the 360?

Your Best Buy didn't have any copies? If I see a good upcoming deal from Speedy, I'll normally buy it the week before, and price-match it once the deal hits at Best Buy.

You will be a very old man before that happens. Microsoft just casually mentioned that the new XBox won't be coming out for many years since there is so much more they can do with the existing XBox 360.

With the world economy the way it is and will probably be at least until thru 2010, I doubt that we will see a new console until well after 2012.

I mean think about it. How much more graphically great can the games get? I don't see too many complaints from people about the quality of graphics. It's the quality of games that can be less than desirable.

I think we will see a new Wii long before we see an XBox 720 or a PS4. ;)

Point being, I don't want to buy all my shit again. No matter when the next system comes out. I'd like to be able to bring all my DLC with me.

do you automatically get prompted for dashboard updates.. or is there someplace i can have it check for updates?

i just got my elite for christmas.. when i first started it, it prompted to update the dashboard.. i assumed that was the latest
but right now. my divx files arent supported.

edit: and yes they are autodownloaded. When there is an update you will be forced to download the thing when you log onto Live.

nice.. i have no problems playing the files directly from the dashboard..
seems like its faster anyways

i dont see much need to switch back and forth between live tv and downloaded content anyways

I disagree with this. I will be extremely shocked if Microsoft doesn't have a new console out by the end of 2010, with Sony right behind.

Nintendo plays in their own world, so I have no idea what the future holds for their next console, but Microsoft and Sony are probably already deep into the next consoles development.

He wasn't stating an opinion for you to disagree with. He posted an article with statements from the Xbox head explicitly saying "The life cycle for this generation of consoles -- and I'm not just talking about Xbox, I'd include Wii and PS3 as well -- is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations."

Well, fuck. I finally just got my 360 back and sure enough, with a disc spinning in the drive it screeches and moans like the Titanic sideswiping an iceberg. It's already frozen twice on me in the first hour of use -- once with Fable 2 and once with Doritos Dash of Destruction (!). Guess I have to send the damn thing back. What the hell sort of fix is that?

Decker I have been through the same thing. I had 6 repairs before I gave up and bought a new Arcade unit. No matter what they tell you, you will still get a pos refurb.

I think the days of the 5-year console cycle are over, now that DLC and hard drives are the standard. Doesn't mean that there won't be a next next generation, just means that it won't come as quickly this time around.

I think it will be interesting to see what Sony or Nintendo do. Sony is lagging behind and losing money. Do they keep on hoping that the PS3 can recover and catch up still, or do they look to a new console. The Wii is selling like crazy still, and it will be interesting to see if Nintendo just rides that until sales actually drop, or if they will come out with some sort of refresh like the DS to add features or maybe bump up the graphical capabilities.

Exactly. All this means is that the 360 won't have a four-year lifespan like the original Xbox but we will see the next Xbox by Christmas 2011. And of course Microsoft and Sony are deep into their next consoles' development unless they're planning on going the way of Sega.

I got my original unit back. Same Serial #. It never made noises like that before and didn't ever freeze before it RRoD'd. What the hell are they doing to it?
I think you're right, I'll send this back in and just buy an Arcade model. Too bad the Arcade comes with that ugly white drawer face that clashes with all the non-white faceplates.

There is a way to remove the drawer cover and switch them. The button for open/close will remain white.

Currently, there's another link that saves an additional 7%, making it $158 + tax. That sealed the deal for me. If I ever get my 2006 model working right, I'll put it in the bedroom or trade it in or something.

Argh! I broke down and bought one, since I have a launch Xbox and I'm convinced it'll be going down any day now (noticed some skipping from Mirror's Edge before I loaded it onto the Hard Drive). I blame you!

On a side note, besides the whole DRM thing, anyone have more than one console and just switch profiles from one to the other to play games with a memory card (I realize you can recover your profile to any console online, but it takes forever)
