I just went through some of the videos and Walking After You is one of my favorite of all-time songs so I am just going to get the whole album. This will only be my second full album (after Judas Priest) so I don't feel like I have been buying whole albums foolishly.

TimeandTide 11-11-08 10:47 AM

Just curious, but how do you typically play? Solo w/guitar? Vocals? Drums? Online? With multiple friends over at your place?

Asking because I'm debating whether to just pick up GH:WT guitar bundle and the RB2 standalone (as some have suggested in these threads), or get the whole RB2 package as I'm kinda intrigued by the vocals and drums.

I'd mostly be playing alone or with the occasional date.

Advice?

Full bundle. The little bit extra cost will be used eventually. Hell, you may find you enjoy drumming anyway as it is really fun.

Plus, don't you have a young daughter as well? My 8 year-old girl loves playing the drums.

jdpatri 11-11-08 11:00 AM

I mostly play solo drums. And when friends come over, I'm still playing drums because they're all trained in classic Guitar Hero.

Drums are a necessity. Best part about Rock Band, IMO.

From everything I've read you'll want to go with the Rock Band drums over the GHWT set if you had any doubts there. I only messed around with the WT drums in Best Buy for five minutes so I didn't really get a good feel for them, but they definitely felt like they were lower quality.

Played the whole Foo record twice - one on guitar/vocals and bass/vocals... such a damn good record from start to finish and fun as hell to play. LOVE IT!

Just picked up RB2 (full band kit for PS3) over the weekend. Loving every bit of it, though I'm kind of a terrible drummer on medium. Still working on unlocking everything. Anyone have any suggestions for how to unlock all the songs quickly? I know there's an unlock code, but that disables a lot of other functions in the game, correct? Also, do you have to enter the code to unlock all the songs each time you play?

I'm also in need of a second guitar. I'm thinking about getting the GHWT guitar bundle, but are there any other guitars out there that are better?

pinata242 11-11-08 12:39 PM

The fastest way to unlock everything is to go into the Tour Challenges.

After you play on the first tier, you will unlock specific Decades Challenges (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s).

Playing one of those will unlock the associated Infinite Decades Challenge (Infinite 60s, Infinite 70s, etc..)

Just having those Infinite ones unlocked will unlock all the songs in that decade. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACTUALLY PLAY THE INFINITE CHALLENGES. Just unlock them.

You only have to enter the code one time for your profile and then it will become a selectable option in the cheats menu. Just remember that when checked you will not be able to save or make progress, etc. It's just great for parties until you do unlock everything.

I can't speak for the guitars that come in the GH bundle, but I use the Grinder by Blockhead. I actually prefer it over the Fender that comes packaged with RB.

The strummer is waaaay better IMO. The guitar itself is a little smaller... but it's heavier. I think I read somewhere that there's actually a weight in it to make it heavier. It just feels a lot sturdier. It also has the effects switch, which I don't think the GH guitars have. It's compatible with both GH and RB and the wireless dongle has connections for the PS2 and PS3. The only downside is it doesn't have the lower fret buttons, so it's a little harder to put up a big score in the big rock endings in RB, but other than that it's my guitar of choice. Plus it comes in that "Love It or Hate It" metallic red color.

Awesome. I didn't realize that's how it worked. I was worried I was on a time crunch to unlock everything before my friends came over this weekend.

Thanks for the tip, I might have to check that one out. Another question for the masses: does the effects switch do anything for your score or does it just change the tone of the guitar/bass?

shumway 11-11-08 02:08 PM

^^ Just changes the tone of the guitar/bass when overdrive is activated.

19K 11-11-08 02:19 PM

^^ and during solos (regardless of overdrive)

lordwow 11-11-08 03:23 PM

Ya, watched the videos, I'm only getting Monkey Wrench/My Hero for now.

I'm a little late to the party, what's the synopsis of the ACDC Rock pack? I only like around 60% of the songs listed. Worth $40 then?

1 time use code to download songs to your hard drive? Does that mean I'll always be able to access (re-download) the songs even if I sell the disc?

Speaking of selling it, do people buy it without a useable code? How much have you gotten for it?

Thanks

pinata242 11-11-08 03:42 PM

$40 isn't really accurate if you're thinking of selling it.

Yes, you should be able to re-d/l at any point without the disc. In fact, you never have to actually put the disc in your drive if you don't want to.

A couple people here sold theirs for $25 last week so they were only out $15-$20 total.

This here's the way to do it:

Buy on Ebay through Live.com with a Buy It Now. Out of pocket costs (including rebate) are reduced to $30 assuming a $40 auction with free shipping... but make sure it's a sealed copy from a good seller, otherwise you risk receiving a copy sans the download code. Once you receive the track pack, download everything and then re-Ebay (or auction site of your choice) with a Buy It Now (so others may take advantage of the greatness of the Live.com deal). Expected total out of pocket? $5-$10.

If you like AC/DC, it's a no-brainer, IMO. I'm not a big fan by any means, but I enjoy a lot of their stuff, and every song on the disc is fun. Not sure what they're going for w/o a code now, but like pinata said, some of us got ~$25 last week. So after taxes and eBay/PayPal fees, I think I paid about $20-21 for 18 good songs.

EDIT: What jdpatri said. I had ants in my pants and got it on release at Walmart.

Honestly, if I'd been able to go anywhere other than Walmart I probably would have scooped it up on release day... but because of my aversion for actually setting foot inside Wally World, I was more than able wait until copies started showing up on Ebay for MSRP.

superfro 11-11-08 04:30 PM

I posted this in the wrong thread earlier, but I can't help but state my excitement so....

I got up at 6am this morning to download and play "The Colour and the Shape" and it was worth every minute.

Can't wait to get on the drums!

Expansion Cymbals for Lefties

So I was talking to the manager at my local GameStop today about the cymbals, specifically asking if he had heard about any complications for lefties (as there is no red port). He said he hadn't heard anything, but he'd let me know.

I get home and he calls me a couple hours later that someone returned their set, as they didn't realize it was a Rock Band 2 only accessory. He sold them to me for 10% off because they were open box, and told me I could bring them back if they didn't work for lefties.

I get home, open 'em up, set-up is fairly painless. Go into freestyle trainer with lefty flip on, hit the cymbal I have plugged into green (hoping it remapped for lefties). What happens? SNARE CYMBAL!! Try it in game as well, and again, it didn't remap to red.

Complete and fucking utter waste of time and money for any lefties that may have been interested. I had asked Dan Teasdale about this before they were released, and he said that lefties wouldn't be left in the cold as far as cymbals were concerned. Maybe there's a patch coming later, but as for now, hold off if you're a lefty.

UncleGramps 11-11-08 05:43 PM

Dumb question, but...couldn't you just plug the cymbal into the opposite port?

There is no red port on the drums. There are Green, Yellow, and Blue. The only way it could feasibly work for lefties is if they remapped the Green cymbal into a Red cymbal when Lefty Flipped.

shumway 11-12-08 12:00 PM

You would think something like that could be pretty easily patched.

Just like showing stars next to scores.

^^Good point! Maybe that's coming back with Rock Band 3. ;)
