Key word is most. I've been downloaded all the free stuff willy nilly the last couple weeks. Last night I went to look at one of the free videos and saw that I had 5 copies of it. Can't they make it smart enough to tell you that you have already downloaded it? Of course I could just blame my apparently weak memory....

Is there a way to turn off 'chat' in online multiplayer games?

I got Call of Duty Modern Warfare a few days ago and did some online playing. I dont have a chat bluetooth hooked up yet Im hearing these morons sing and talk like gangster wannabees through my surround sound. How do I rid of this so I dont have to hear these retards? I have the same problem with burnout but it sounds like distant radio chatter, I cant tell whats being said.

Thought this might be of some relevance in the PS3 thread.

After plowing through Target's after Christmas 50% off clearance sale, I found a nice mini-Bluetooth headset -- originally marked at $20 --- for $10. Not sure how well it interconnects with the system yet, but it's certainly something worth looking into if you need one. It was in one of Target's bold red-and-white striped gift boxes.

So I've set up my PS3 and got the WiFi going... I've noticed that the downloads are really slow. I can blaze through a 77mb download (the same size as the base file of Home) on my PC or 360 in a few minutes or less. The PS3, though, is exponentially slower. I ran a speedtest on my PC and got around 15,000 down, and on the PS3, I barely got 1,000. I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong. I've opened up the right ports on my router and everything.

Is the PSN just that slow?

My PS3 seems to average about 1 MB every 1-2 seconds. Sounds like you either have something slowing your internet to the PS3 or happened to hit a time when the network drags. The PS3 might be slower than downloading on the PC but it isn't that slow. I downloaded a game close to 300 MB in size just last night and it didn't take much longer than 5 minutes.

Hmm, I'm coming up on the end of my return period for my copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 in the next couple of days, and I still haven't decided on whether I should keep the game. Sure I'd like to play it, but the spectre of possibly fricking up my PS3 (see here) by playing it has me second guessing. Did anyone ever get to the bottom of this issue?

I am having a issue that just started out of the blue last night....

We were watching a bluray movie last night and about half way through the movie just froze, I kept trying to get it playing, put disc in and it would show up, you would see the title of the movie and the icon, and it would go like its loading black screen and it would either sit at a black screen with the loading icon at the top right or it would bring me back with a error message. I tried other blurays and games couldn't get it working, I could get the bluray to where i would see the bluray loading screen. So i quit trying and tried again in 20 minutes

I was able to get to the movie menu, and was able to get the movie to play finally but as it seemed like when i would skip to a different screen it would freeze up.

So i tried to play MGS. Sometimes it would show up on the Playstation "dashboard" with the title of the game, but wouldn't load. I would get ps3 error 80010514 sometimes.

Then I would get MGS to load , I could load my game and i would be able to play the game where I saved it, but if I went into the pause menu for too long i would get a symbol in MGS with the disc and a question mark in it and the game would just sit there.

What kind of problem does this sound like? PS3 going bad? laser going bad? dust in disc tray? My ps3 has acted perfect never has froze before. I got it last christmas so I had it one year, so its probably out of warranty. I hear its a 150 to get the ps3 repaired. Has anyone ever been able to get the cost waived or able to get them to take off the repair cost? Cause I dont have 150 bucks to spend on the ps3 right now.

Sounds like its the seaon for busted PS3s. I think my drive just went. It froze during RB2 - as I was pwning Painkiller, btw... Anyway, no no discs load. The blue light stays on, ang the loading circle in the upper right keeps loading. tried DVD, BD, and games...

So, I'm hoping its still covered at Costco so I dont have to wait weeks for a return. Any other tips to try before I return it? I'm gonna run a backup, will that cover everything? I don't want to lose any data...

A friend of mine is going through his PS3s like everyone else is going through 360s. He's currently on his third.

So, costco took my broken ps3 back, and i got a new one. The backup/restore procedure worked ok. got scared when my trophies didnt show up right away, but turns out I have to play each game once to load the "game data"

the biggest pisser is that rock band & rock band 2 game AND SAVE data is copy protected, so it won't restore. I understand having to download the DLC again, but WTF are my bands & scores copy protected? complete bs.

Quick and easy question, can the PS3 accept mini CD/DVDs? Santa brought me a DVDR camcorder for Christmas and I was wondering if the PS3 slot loader will take them like the Wii.

The real question is... did you ever get the LittleBigPlanet issues worked out?

I have no idea, but if I were to bet on it, I'd say no. I mean, it's Sony we're talking about here. What have they done non-proprietorial with the PS3?

You seriously don't know? How about supporting user-replaceable internal harddrives? There are other things, but I'll leave it at that.

hah, not yet. I tried sub accounts and that didn't help. When I was wrestling with the broken ps3 I saw something about copying save game data from 1 profile to another. Now that would overwrite costumes and hearts that the other profile has... I'll look more into it tomorrow.

Did a little googling and the PS3 does support 3" media as long as it is round. None of the irregular or rectangular business card discs. Checked out a youtube vid just to be sure.

Tried it myself and it works like a charm.

You can use any bluetooth device with it, plug in any keyboard or external hard drive that you want. I'd say it's a lot less proprietary than Microsoft with the 360...

I've noticed many reports of this on the official PS forum. If the drive is still spinning it may be worth a try to use a disc cleaner, but in most cases the drive isn't even spinning the discs. They put it in and when they eject it the disc is in the same exact position. If it is under warranty send it in for a repair, but if not it is $150 to get it fixed.

Since there isn't a Motorstorm thread, I thought I'd post here. Picked up Motorstorm Pacific Rift the other day (Target sale price, PM at CC). I really like it, actually. It seems they fixed a lot of the problems in the original. The tracks are much more varied and interesting. It looks absolutely amazing. Very fun arcade racing game. Don't know if I'd prefer it over Pure, but it's nice to just be able to race and not have to worry about landing perfect tricks to get a boost. If anyone is on the fence, I'd say pick it up tomorrow at Target for $39 -- it's worth it.

BTW : Target will be selling $20 PSN cards for $19 on 1/11/09. I know, it ain't much to be excited about but if they don't charge sales tax, it's the first tiny PSN discount anyone who doesn't have a Meier's will ever see.

Please make sure you are not charged tax. The card is like a gift card and you will be paying the tax when you make your purchase at the PSN store. You should not be charged tax twice.

Really? Is that tax just for gift cards? I don't get charged tax when I pay on PSN by credit card.
