So I just got enough Best Buy gift cards to purchase a PS3, which I've been wanting for a while. Anything I should be aware of? I plan on using it mostly for Blu-Ray (I game mostly on the 360 and PC) but I was hoping to try Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid. Is it worth it to get the Blu-Ray Bluetooth Remote or should I get an IR reciever to use with my universal remote? I don't even mind using the gaming remote control. Any other suggestions? Should I go with the 80GB or the 160GB Uncharted bundle? Tell me what I need to know to enjoy my PS3 experience!

Well the remote is $25 I believe, an IR receiver would cost more and be more trouble to set up.

That would depend on which one he gets, based on the functionality he wants. Obviously an IR to Bluetooth converter is expensive (and I believe they require buying the BT remote anyway), but something like the Nyko Blu-wave is fairly cheap.

The cheap ones have some drawbacks, like having to take port 1 (so you have to change the controller assignment every time you start the PS3 if you want to play a game), and they don't give you as many buttons because they're limited to what you can do with the controller. They can't turn the system on either. However, for basic use, they're not bad. These days, the controller port assignment changing wouldn't even be a drawback for me, since I have an arcade stick and the Buzz dongle plugged in. I have to change the assignment most of the time anyway, because whatever is plugged in takes the first ports.

I bought this Bluetooth-IR transmitter, which is a bit pricey but it looks great installed on the system. It's worked flawlessly since I bought it. Plus, if you are considering dropping $25 on a PS3 remote anyway, why not drop $10 more and just use your universal remote?

You cannot turn on/off the PS3 with it though, which seems to be the only drawback. You can turn off the system in the XMB though, so you're left with either using a controller to turn on the system or getting up to do it.

Walmart has a bundle package of the Hancock Unrated Blu-ray and the official Sony Bluetooth remote for ~$30.

I know a firmware update a long time ago was supposed to allow for resume play on blu rays, but I've never gotten it to work. Is there some option I'm supposed to enable or does this feature never work?

shumway 12-23-08 01:11 AM

I've had it work on a couple randomly as I have accidentally hit stop instead of pause many times. Most of the time, though, it doesn't work. I'm just as in the dark as you are.

Resume with blu-ray only works on the more primitive titles. Titles making heavy use of BD-J (internal bookmark system, title-specific run-time bar, etc.) will not be compatible with the PS3's resume. Basically, I don't think the resume has ever worked with a BD that has a loading screen before the menu pops up. It'll most certainly work on most Warner titles that have been released thus far, as they are light on BD-J (Batman Begins and Dark Knight are exceptions).

Personally I's say get the 80GB. You can buy Drake's for cheap and you can always upgrade your hard drive down the road. Unless you use it to store music, etc I can't see why you'd need more than 80GB at this time.

I have a Harmony 676 and bought the Nyko BluWave for $15 from Amazon. Totally worth it to not have to use a controller when I am used to using my Harmony. If you already have a universal this is a good way to go.

For those without a universal remote, eBay main page has a NEW Harmony 520 for $29.99 shipped. So add a BluWave for $15 and you can control all your equipment.

I think a Harmony is like Tivo. Once you get it, you can't imagine how you lived without it.

Are you sure? It's only advertised for the 360 version in the weekly ad. It would figure since I just bought the set for $55 on Saturday...

Thanks for the heads up! No longer online but was able to do in store pickup.

Now, is this game worth it or should I ebay to just get a cheap headset?

darkside 12-23-08 09:06 PM

Suikoden was added today to PSN and only $5.99. Awesome RPG and I can play it on the PSP as well. I can only hope Suikoden II will follow.

shumway 12-23-08 10:22 PM

I still have both of the actual PS1 discs for those. Also have all of the PS2 games and will definitely pick up the DS game when it is released. I'm definitely a fan.

Trevor 12-23-08 10:57 PM

Silly question maybe. I have the newer 80 gig PS3 that specifically says no PS2 support on the box iirc. What about PS1 discs?

A new free GH track just was recently added btw.

It will still play PS1/PS3 games, just not PS2...

If anyone is looking for a great ps3 game pick up valkyria chronicles, just picked it up today and its amazing so far, great visuals, music, story's great so far, gameplay is alot of fun.

Groucho 12-28-08 12:43 PM

New PS3 owner here. Bought it primarily for use as a blu-ray player.

I'm a bit disappointed with the store. Many of the downloadable games look interesting, but very few have demos (compare to the 360 where every Live game has a demo). Also, I'm glad that I can go and easily see all my purchases -- but it would be helpful if I could also see which I've already downloaded and installed.

Michael Corvin 12-28-08 01:40 PM

Most of the stuff you download will show a little red icon in the corner of the item square designating that you already bought it.

Groucho 12-29-08 12:48 PM

What I'm looking for is an indicator that I already downloaded it. I picked up a bunch of stuff for LittleBigPlanet and it was quite tedious -- I bought it at the store, then it took me to a screen where I had to select each item individually for download. And then, after each one downloaded I had to remember since there was no indicator.

Walker Boh 12-29-08 12:50 PM

Yeah, they really need to add a "download and install everything I just bought" option to the check-out process.

This. There are a ton of great downloadable games on the PS3, but they need to make demos mandatory or not enough people are going to make the leap and buy before they try.
