GREAT game, just finished. A few tips for the boss alien at the end:

Spoiler:

1) The alien has five yellow "flowers" at the end of tentacles that you need to explode. When there's two left, he grabs you, and you have to shoot at the remaining two while your aim is severely hobbled. I recommend "wounding" those two flowers before he grabs you. That way, you only have to shoot at the flowers one or two times and you're done.

2) You don't need to kill the pregnant aliens that the boss then spits at you. Just freeze them and start moving around. The big guy will slap his tentacles at them and dispatch them without releasing the little crawlers.

3) After that, the desperate boss starts flinging its tentacles at you, and there's a rhythm. First one to the left, then one to the right, then pause. You can easily avoid those by running back and forth and taking aim at the thing's "inner flowers" during the pauses.

I love it but......this game is fucking hard - even on easy. I'm stuck on level 5 where:
Spoiler:
I finally killed that fucker sticking to the wall, got the DNA but after the air lock sequence, I can kille the leech type things with the line gun no problem but walking into the main room where that hunter thing that doesn't die is a challenge - I try running past all the enemies but I never succeed - I really do love this game but I get pissed when I'm cheated by a game as well i.e. never enough cash, too much ammo wasted on one damn enemy, not enough nodes to upgrade all of your weapons on the first play through...etc

Not sure if someone mentioned in a previous post but I have a hard time beliving someone didn't.....the difficulty on this game sucks. I mainly play games of this type keep the ball rolling story wise and get my fixed by continuing to be immeresed by the storyline, I don't even get edgy anymore by playing the same damn part over, and over, and over again. Fuck man, I really wish video games would evolve a little more for the casual player.

Even with this huge dissapointment, I still would recommend anyone to pick this up (highly). For me, looks just like a show off game I'll break out for people when they stop by - don't see myself putting up with the headache much longer. Call me lazy but this is EXACTLY the type of shit I try to avoid in video games.

Raul3 01-04-09 11:27 PM

You may be doing something wrong.
I'm far from a hardcore player. Most of the times "Normal" is my perfect setting. I played this game in "Normal" and the only part I hated becase was impossible for me was the "asteroids". I repeated some parts several times, and stuff like that, but I never thought the game was really hard. And yeah a lot of people say that the only way to play this game was on "hard" because other way it was too easy.

So, what chapter is that? Someone here should give you a good tip.

discostu1337 01-05-09 10:04 AM

I'm up to chapter 7 on easy and have only died like 3 times, usually by some random stupid thing...never from enemies. They are all pretty much 1 hit kill on easy. Blow off some legs and then stomp them.

I agree with Rival11 that this is just a showoff game. It really has no depth to it, characters and story are forgettable, and all 13 "levels" are almost identical. Get off tram, fix broken crap, oh no..more shit went wrong, get back on tram. It's ok for a play through, but Bioshock destroys this game.

As oppossed to all the varying gameplay in Bioshock? ;)

If you want to argue story, then I can see the point, but if my memory serves me right, I think for the most part I just kept fighting the same enemies through different environments in Bioshock, which is pretty much the same thing I did in Dead Space. Only at the end of Dead Space I didn't have to.....
Spoiler:
fight the Lawnmower Man.

I just started this over the weekend and all I can say is WOW. So far this game has more "Oh shit" moments than anything in recent history. I'm only on chapter 3, but loving it so far.

On a side note, is the flamethrower worth buying, or should I wait for more weapons to pop up? So far I upgraded my suit and bought the wider plasma thing, but that's it.

I personally found the flamethrower to be one of the more useless weapons in the game, so I'd skip it in favor of other stuff.

Re: Dead Space

Let me clear a few things up: This honestly might be the best game I've ever played - I meant "a show off game" meaning I am so damn frustrated from paying it that that's all that it may become for me.

With that said - I did end up getting through level 5.

I'm pretty good at these games but I just hate it when a game cheaps you. While playing bioshock I enjoyed it because of the flow (in both gameplay and stroy) but dead space likes to cheap you on ammo, power-ups, etc... It just annoys the piss out of me when games do this to you.

That's basically all I'm saying. we'll see how level 6 goes ;)

See..and I think that's where the game is more "survival" than "horror". Unforutnatley I see way too many people getting caught up on the "horror" part of that phrase and ultimately think the game is a letdown. Which I can understand, but think they're looking at it wrong.

You must have hated the old Resident Evil games. ;)

I did have some problems in the beginning with ammo conservation in Dead Space, but that changed once I learned to be more efficient in my killing. It's all about learning the most effective order of limb/tentacle removal for each baddie. And getting used to using stasis in conjunction really helps. Stomping frozen ground enemies instead of shooting them may take a few seconds longer, but it will save you ammo if you're in jeopardy.

Re: Dead Space

I must be a crackshot, as I always have an abundance of ammo in Dead Space. I sell 90% of it at the store.

Re: Dead Space

I finished it a few weeks ago and thought it was a great game. I found I was running low on ammo in the middle chapters, but around Ch. 8-9 I had enough. By then end I was stacked with it, but I also sold off all my guns later on except the Line Gun and the Plasma Cutter, so I didn't need to worry about a bunch of different types.

The worst part of the game for me were the turret guns. That was frustrating to say the least.

Raul3 01-06-09 12:59 PM

Re: Dead Space

Yes, if you are using more than 2 guns that won't help you.
You can use only one, the main one, try the horizontal mode (?) and killing should be easy. What else? There are some boxes that contain ammo (or something like that, I forgot). I discovered that late in the game, but that will help you a lot too.

But yeah, by chapter 8 you should have a lot of ammo.

Slowly realized this as I just sold all of my weapons except the Plasma cutter and the Line gun (as someone else mentioned earlier as well).

Yeah, I didn't know you could stomp the boxes until level 4 as well.

Haven't really bothered trying the other fire method with the cutter either - I will give it a shot.

Dude, thats why your supposed to dismember your enemies not directly shoot them. I beat the game on Normal with the pistol and only foud myself using 2 shots for the regular guys and maybe 5 on teh black ones. Shoot the leg then when its down shoot an arm off. There is plenty of money as well, sell excess ammo - I found myself picking up all this extra ammo for the Line Gun and Force Gun, etc that sell for a lot of money. I got the 300,000 achievement pretty early in the game.
Spoiler:
As for the regenerating guy, you need to keep going past him and eventually there should be, if i remember correctly a kryo-chamber in which you statis him when he walks though it (lead there by you) and then activate it, not quite sure though I beat it a little over a month ago.

Re: Dead Space

I'm on my third copy of this game, all new copies. The first two discs were covered in lint and were either marked and lightly scratched (Disc 1) or covered in lint and weird off-colour gray spots (Disc 2.) I bought the third copy at another store upon returning "Disc 1" for a refund and it was also covered in lint, but luckily it wasn't scratched so I'm going to keep it.

Did anyone else experience a similar problem?

Re: Dead Space

Just beat this last night.

Yes, "The best game I've ever played" and easily the
Spoiler:
the best end boss fight ever

So am I still pissed about level 5? Ha, yes I am. There were a few other points along the way involving "air" that pissed me off as well but I got over it.

So to break down why I love it so much:

Pros:

- best Graphics I've seen on the console to date
- For the first time ever in a video game, I didn't mind backtracking - it actually fit game perfectly
- The tram stations - loved all the different environments upon exiting a tram to start the next level - I found myself saying "yeah, I could seem them putting this here".
- Every level after 6 is a blast which levels 1, 2, 3, & 4 prepared you good for.
- The sound in this game is amazing
-
Spoiler:
Best end boss cinematics and fight I think I've ever seen\played

- and last but not least, the way this game keeps you on edge throughout - I haven't really played too many survival horror games but this one had me tense as hell the whole time.

Cons:

- You all know I'm gonna talk about the "cheap factor" here but I'm in no way taking it as bad as you think and I KNOW a lot of people agree with me but the game as whole really makes this forgiving for the most part.

- The stroy: it seemed really forced by the time you figure out what is going on and is pretty convulted. With that said though, it is simple and the audio logs you pick up along the way (I got them all) really add an effective touch.

- Weapons: they're not that great and you can only upgrade one in full through you first play - again, a big dissapoint for the casual gamer who will only play through once in full.

- The wall monsters: so damn annoying - exteremly annoying, I should have just taped down the right trigger and pressed A to reaload every 10 seconds - just a cheap way to get you to waste ammo and yes, that's what it's for seeing as how those red containers that explode to take them out with one shot are not around everywhere they are and seeing as how you can only afford to power up one weapon at a time...I only stuck with one gun (the plasma cutter).

That's about it for the Cons - I really had only one glitch which I think was during level 4 where a door opens and closed really fast once to scare you, I walk through and end up falling forever then finally die - upon entering the same door carefully again, there is no hole in the floor and it's just a simple hallway.

The ending
Spoiler:
scared the shit out of me as well, they just had to put one last touch on huh?

Re: Dead Space

Oh, just wanted to add as well that there are "backlogs" available after you beat the game that gives you more detail on the story - I haven't went through them yet myself but will soon.

FusionX 01-10-09 01:17 PM

Re: Dead Space

The wall monsters take 5-6 shots tops, just shoot the tentacles that holds them to the wall. Then they die. I got all but one audio log, you had to knock out the asteroid tethers, but not deploy the beacon, then go to the control room and try to launch the asteroid. You then get an audio log telling you to go deploy the beacon. So I missed that one, but I got all the others.

Guess I was too frustrated by the eggs they shoot out to take the time to notice it.

Believe it or not, the level with the control room is the ONLY level that I did out of order (objectives) - so that's the only reason why I got it.

Re: Dead Space

I finished the game last week, and loved every damn minute of it. At 9 hours, it was the perfect length for me, and while I was disappointed at the lack of scares...

Spoiler:
the last scene before the credits made me jump out of my seat!!! I finished the game around 1:30am and I had the sound up pretty high for the final battle.

I'm going to rent the prequel DVD now, anybody have any feedback on that yet?

I found it to be just ok. It actually doesn't do all that much for the game, so you're probably ok either way. Check it out if you're curious, but it's not really going to flesh out the story too much if that's what you're looking for.
