Really? I loved the first one, but that was what...1996? Soul Reaver was also a good game from that era.

The original Tomb Raiders actually frustrated the hell out of me, but the remake (Anniversary) and the two new ones for 360 (Legend and Underworld) I thought were fantastic.

As for Soul Reaver..never liked it to be honest. Loved the original (Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain) but didn't care for the sequels. As they say, to each their own ;)

I for one can't wait for Batman:AA to come out, it looks fantastic, and I'm definitely not going to write it off because previous Batman games weren't good.

re: the theif series...I checked it out on Wiki, and it looks like a PC/Xbox series, which would explain my unfamiliarity. I also HATE stealth games, and hope this new Batman doesn't go too far in that direction.

Understand, I can't play the original Tomb Raider now, but when it first came out on PS1, it was awesome. I can't play the old Resident Evils either, for the same reason. 3D games have just evolved too much.

I generally hate stealth games as well, but I love the Thief series. Stealth done right can be fun, and Thief is definitely stealth done right.

The first two Thief games were PC-only games released in the late 90s. Actually the first Thief came out within a month or two of the original Metal Gear Solid. Thief was a much better game, but it was relegated to an obscure cult following while MGS received fame and mainstream status. Go figure.

Thief 3 was released for both the original Xbox and PC. Unlike the first two Thief games which were designed for PC, Thief 3 was designed for consoles (i.e. mainstream gamers). Thief 3 is one game that is frequently used to demonstrate "PC games being dumbed down for consoles." Thief 3 was simplified A LOT compared to the original two games. Thief 3 was still a decent game, but it pales in comparison to the original two games.

See also Deus Ex: Invisible War. We can only hope Deus Ex 3 is more like the original version than the sequel.

Sorry to derail the derailed thread. I love all 3 Thief games, but I definitely agree that the first two are better than the third.

Edit to add: Hasn't it been like five years since the last Warren Spector game? Come on, Warren -- I'm dying to play your next game!

I'm really looking forward to this game. But I hate QTE and button mash combos. Hopefully this game can avoid that.

This was mentioned somewhere in this topic earlier. There's no chance of me getting it at that price but still curious to see what it all looks like :). A picture of it should be released pretty soon.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Seeing this topic bumped reminded me. Its now being said the that PS3 version will have a playable Joker. Taken from Kotaku.com

A new advertisement appearing earlier than expected in Sony's PlayStation Home reveals the ability to play as The Joker in PlayStation 3 exclusive challenge levels for Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Several readers sent us in blurry photos of the new sign, which has appeared in various spots throughout the Home service today, featuring a grinning Joker (the best kind) and boasting exclusive challenge levels for the PS3 version in which players will be able to take control of the clown prince of crime. I hopped online and snapped my own shot, but appreciate the efforts of our readers to bring this story to light.

I contacted public relations for the game, who couldn't offer me any details on the exclusive, or whether or not the Xbox 360 version would be getting something similar. In fact, the man I spoke to seemed rather shocked that the ad had already gone up. Whoops.

For those of you who haven't been following the game, Challenge Maps are additional goodies outside of the main game that players can run through over and over again, trying to get the best score, which Crecente got a look at during GDC this year. We've you can find a video of Batman taking on one such level here.

Hopefully its true

Damn. I hate the ps controllers sooo much. But I might have to get one instead of an xbox. (Yeah, I only have a Wii at this point in time, but this game is probably going to make my desire for one of the big boys reach threshold.)

Thankfully I usually don't care about things like "challenge maps" that are outside of the main game. I can see the appeal for replayability though.

She looks a lot like something from Bioshock. Not a bad thing, just an observation.

So is Arleen Sorkin gonna voice Harley? I hope so.

EDIT: According to IMDB she is:

Wow! They certainly nailed the character of Harley! I hope she's one of the very last boss battles or at that you encounter her during several levels of the game.

Decker 04-24-09 05:20 PM

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Tried the demo at lunch. Very brief demo -- just a challenge level. I don't think it does the game justice since it's just you battling a bunch of bad guys coming at you in waves. You could use the batarang, but there really isn't time to with the henchmen descending on you. It's not a good way to feature a stealth game. There are three buttons : X for punching, Y for counters and A for Cape Stun. The counter system is actually too easy (yes, stop the presses, Decker just thought something video-game related was TOO EASY). If you're fighting with someone and another henchman comes up alongside you, a bunch of lightning bolts appear over his head. This means he's about to attack. At that point if you press Y, you'll do a counter to his attack and disarm him if he's holding a weapon like a club (but you won't keep using the club -- apparently Batman finds that unsporting). There's a cool "detective mode" that shows the skeletons of the henchmen, but it doesn't show the satisfying fractures that you're no doubt inflicting. I think it's really to be used in the main game because it didn't seem at all useful in the demo.

RocShemp 04-24-09 09:57 PM

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Yeah, the demo was good for showcasing combat. The counter system is a little too easy to a point that combat will most likely be a waste of time between the actual stealth missions. It's both good and bad since it'd be ridiculous for Batman to have a huge battle with random thungs when he's supposed be sneaking around but Batman is supposed to be a total badass and the streamline fight system gets that point across.

So Gamestop is offering an exclusive villain and map as a preorder bonus (I assume on top of the already PS3-exclusive Joker). The wesbite says the instructions will be packaged inside the game.

Does this mean there are going to be different SKUs at gamestop? I guess I just don't understand how this code can be packaged inside a sealed game at Gamestop but not be in the sealed copies from Amazon.

Several of the Gamestop exclusive titles even have unique artwork, like backcover artwork telling you what's different. I think the SKUs are the same though.

The distributor and publisher have a deal with EB/Gamestop so they will just package the codes to the copies that will be delivered to EB/Gamestop. While the rest won't be have it such as Amazon or Best Buy.

So, this most likely just got pushed back until Sept/Oct to try and make more Holiday money. Yet another Eidos screw-up! This is gonna really screw over my store, we had almost 75 pre-orders for it, #1 on the west coast and top 10 in the company :(
