Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears

Last night I gave the shop owner in Paradise Falls the 20 Chinese assault rifles to make his shop better. I went back after a few days to find that his shop wasn't that much better, so I decided to kill all the slavers. Can someone explain to me why the two slave hoes w/ zero armor took more damage with the same gun (Lincoln Repeater) than the no name slavers w/ armor?

So I just picked this up this weekend, cheap, and have to say, holy hell do I SUCK at this game.

I'm playing on EASY. And I'm still getting my clock cleaned on one of the very first real missions. I guess I still don't really get the combat at all ... am I supposed to be going into that mode where you choose which body part to shoot all the time? God that's a pain in the ass. I just want to shoot people and have them fall down dead.

And it doesn't help that the game is CRAZY dark (on the ps3). My measly flashlight doesn't seem to do much at all. I pretty much can't play this game during the day, I just can't see anything.

Any hints at all to make this easier? I'm only level 3, and have put most points in melee, small guns, and lockpicking, I think. Was hoping I'd be able to just beat up people with my bat to save on ammo, but that doesn't seem to be working real well.

Yeah, I usually fast forward when it's night.

Start with Megaton and the surroundings, be really careful, at level 3 everything is hard for you. In a couple of levels you should start seeing more improvements.

Yup. I would also recomend pouring all your stat points into small arms for the next 2 or 3 levels if you are having trouble killing things. Also, if you haven't grabed it yet:
Spoiler:
There is a bobble head in the mayor's house you can grab w/o a karma hit

You may also want to look up a character build guide online. There are some things that you may not want to put many points into (I put charisma at 2 on my guy and INT at 8 to start and had a lot more skill points at each level up).

(Unfortunately, it's a custom job, so you can't get your own).

After getting totally consumed by (and loving) Fallout: New Vegas last summer, I figured I'd go for another time suck and ordered Fallout 3 GOTY. It should arrive today, though I probably won't get to it until tomorrow night.

The last few posts were helpful. Are there any other tips or hints I should know about going into the game?

I'm remembering that part of Fable 2 where you give money to a guy early in the game, which allows that city to flourish later on. Anything along those lines, too?

If you choose the perk where you get 2 points for every book you read, you will find it easy to max out all your skills. Do that with caution though. I found that made the game a bit too easy.

Don't nuke Megaton. The DLC were you go into the swamps was hard as hell for me. I was running for my life most of the time so level up before you go there.

Save. Save a lot.

Also, if you are going for all, or most achievements, you may probably want to check some guides on where to save, so you can continue from there for the different achievements.

Fallout 3 is less complex than Fallout: New Vegas, so you should be fine.

I agree with everything already stated above. You'll automatically get hit with a bunch of new quests very early in the game. Most of them are from the DLC, which you shouldn't do until you're level 10 at least. (For reference, those quests are: Aiding the Outcasts, Into the Pitt, The Local Flavor, and Not of This World.)

And some of these quests will take you to places where you can't just leave if you don't feel ready after you get there. Not like the area with the swamps...there you can take the boat back any time you want.

Don't miss the medicine bobble head in vault 101. Once you're out of there you can't go back to get it.

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears

Thanks for the tips. I briefly glanced at the first page of the Fallout 3 wiki and saw a reference to deathclaws. Those damn things annoyed me to no end in New Vegas. Dammit! :)

I'm getting ready to boot the game up. Is the GOTY edition supposed to have a booklet? Because I just opened the case up for the first time and it has essentially a folded insert: Vault Dweller's Survival Guide on the front, the standard health warnings/ratings info/gameplay controls inside, and the warranty on the back. Because of the cover it *looks* like there should be some actual content stapled together inside, but maybe they skimped on this version.

I like having a booklet for quick reference, but I guess I'll have to look that info up online. If I had bought it locally, I'd try to exchange it, but I got it from Amazon and it's not worth the hassle to send it back.

EDIT: Duh. Somehow I missed written in big letters on the inside "full manual available at bethsoft.com/manuals". How cheap. New Vegas had a fairly meaty booklet.

Enjoy your journey. It's one of the best games of all time in my opinion, and I've fully played through it 3 times now (100+ hours each time).

Agreed. One of the greatest games I've ever played.

Not true.

Spoiler:
You go back to Vault 101 later in the game. After that mission, though, then you're screwed.

Save a lot. This game glitched out on my left and right, especially towards the end. I almost didn't finish the DLC because it kept freezing up. It got to where I would save after killing a single enemy, or moving more than 100 yards. Luckily, there wasn't much left, or else this would have driven me insane. The game is awesome, but the freezes took me completely out of the environment.

Enjoy, though. One of the best games I've ever played. Such an insane amount of time spent just wandering around investigating.

I was going to say it was one of the best games of this console generation, but yeah, one of the best games ever.

I think I reached 200 hours, most just walking around.

I knew someone was going to bring that up. I almost did myself. But that second mission is actually missable in some cases (though rare), so I didn't want to create confusion. ;)

I could totally see that. I'm only 2.5 hours into the game and I've only just poked around Megaton. I got my ass handed to me by the Vault guards when I escaped, so I just want a damn bed. Ha ha.

I couldn't play as much as I wanted to over the weekend due to other obligations, but will make this tonight's entertainment.

And joeblow69 wasn't kidding. This game is DARK. I put a whole lot of hours into New Vegas and I guess I was just used to that game's desert palette of oranges and yellows.

You can go to the game options and increase the brightness

DJLinus 06-11-12 03:40 PM

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears

Thanks. I didn't realize you could do that. Tonight I'll bump up the brightness setting in the game.

Heh, I did notice I had to knock up the brightness more than I usually did in other games. I always have that trouble, and this tends to be one of the first things I do in games now before even playing it.

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears

Well, this is frustrating. I died (got wiped out by a super mutant with a missile launcher) and when I came back, the game's all glitchy. I can't holster my weapon - well, I can but then I just take it back out again - and if I switch to a melee weapon I just keep swinging it. After looking at my Pipboy, coming back from the pause screen, jumping, holstering, etc., my weapon fires. I can't play this way.

So I load up my saved game. The glitch is still there. Do it again. Still there. And of course, I only have the one save. I've put about 12 hours into the game already. I don't want to start a new one, but it looks like I might have to. Blurgh. :hairpull:

EDIT: Whew! I quit the game and went back to the Xbox dashboard and then restarted it. That cleared the glitch. Man, I'm so glad I don't have to start over.

I don't know that this helps you, but I always end up with well over 100 saves on these kinds of games.
