Yes, you must connect to battle.net to even play single player. I assume it's their way to combat piracy and keep people from cheating easier.

re: Diablo III + Reaper of Souls (multi-platform)
To everyone who purchased the boxed version of the game, I need to have a guest pass to download the starter edition. Only people who purchased a boxed version have them. Could someone PM me one that they will not be using? I purchased the full game this morning, but I don't want to open it up until I play the starter edition to determine if my system can handle it well. It is frustrating that you can't just download a demo from Blizzard with no strings attached.
here is my laptop specs. i suck a PC hardware knowledge. i am hoping the game will run on the lowest settings at least
ASUS N61JV-X4 laptop
Intel Core i5-430M Processor 2.26 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.53GHz
4GB of DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM, 2 slots, 8GB Max;
Nvidia GT325M Graphics Engine with
1GB DDR3 VRAM
500GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM); Super Multi Optical Disk Drive; Wi-Fi 802.11 bgn; Intel WiDi
HDMI and VGA Ports; USB 3.0 port; 8-in-1 card reader; 2.0MP Webcam
16-Inch HD (1366x768) LED Display; Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) Operating System
i have watched some vids on youtube and there isn't a dramatic difference between low and high settings. I would really appreciate a guest pass. Thanks!

This is going to be a long day at work. I'll post my battletag when I get home (can't remember the number portion).

Oh and I never played either game, just maybe a few minutes of D2 I think. It's kind of like a NWN/BG game where loot drops on the ground and you pick it up, right?

Yeah pretty much. Although Diablo is far more simplistic than Baldur's Gate. Baldur's Gate is rather complex and strategic with its D&D rules. Diablo is just hack, hack, hack as fast as you can click the mouse.

I've been handling work surprisingly well today. I got about two hours in this morning (4AM alarm FTW!), and I got to about the point where the beta ended, so I haven't seen anything new yet. I can't wait to get home and play some more though. A coworker of mine took off the entire week, and yes, I'm jealous.

Beat the first act last night with a friend, and then went to bed. This game will be really fun when I can get a decent group together. A bunch of my friends already bought it, but that wait was infuriating.
Seems once you open a game to the public, in order to invite friends, it's open to everyone and you can't close the open invite. I believe my friend sent me an invite with my email address though. Are those names everyone is giving out even working yet?

Those are just our BNet tag's, yes they'll work. I'm pretty sure you can create a Private game that only accepts people you invite.

IGN is doing a on-demand review, like they have for other online games. They'll be posting impressions each day as they experience more (and are doing a live stream today of them playing). They couldn't really review the game until the servers went live today due to all the online aspects of it.

Starcraft 2 was exactly the same. Blizzard doesn't allow early review copies, they want the reviews to actual experience of playing the game online that the average player will encounter. Besides, it's pretty obvious these games don't need good advance reviews to sell well.

So I went ahead and picked this up, wasn't planning on it but figured what the hell as I was a big fan of Diablo 1 and 2.
