Seriously. Sony? What a clusterfuck system. It would be another thing if the update was a 5 second affair like on XBLA but it's almost like a second install. Ridiculous. I gave up on playing Pain that night. I went to bed.

I agree.... how do you run a special sale
expect people to sit through a long download process and then when they expect to be ready to play you are hit with an update download

fixed.

Just goes to show that Sony is a hardware company and MS is a software company.

One could say this point was already realized with the whole RROD thing.

It's also currently available at Amazon. In fact, it's been available again there since at least Wednesday, so maybe the scarcity is a thing of the past.

That was my point:

MS: Shitty hardware with AAA user interface/Live
Sony: AAA hardware with average user interface/online

So anyone try out Qore yet?

My latest PSM mag had a code to get the first issue of Qore free. After waiting an eternity to download, then install it, here's my initial thoughts:

First thing that comes up is a Hulk trailer. During the very, very beginning (pretty much the ratings screen, before you actually know what the trailer is) it tells you to press X to skip over it. Not knowing what the trailer was, I let it run... once it starts running there's no way to skip over it. Not by pressing X, not by pressing any button on the remote, the only thing I could do was press the PS button to exit out to the PS3 menu.

Once we actually get to the magazine menu, I realize there's no way to navigate using the bluetooth remote. The arrow buttons just won't work, you have to use the PS3 controller. I had always thought the arrow buttons on the remote were the same as the d-pad on the controller, but I guess not.

If you want to watch any of the five or so features, you have to sit through a commercial. It's already a magazine that people have to pay for, and the features are basically just advertising games for their system, but they still have non-skippable ads. To their credit, the ads are pretty short, and once you watch them, it remembers that you saw them once and doesn't make you do it again later, but still.

Content is pretty light. One section seems devoted to the Incredible Hulk movie. The only extra content I could access was the socom theme (the socom beta is probably closed, and the calling all cars download is only available to yearly subscribers). Pressing L2 brings you to an odd pong-like minigame.

Not sure who's paying for a sub to this... anyone sign up and actually like it? I haven't had the time to go through all the features yet, though all the Secret Agent Clank stuff seemed like snippets you'd get from developer features for free on Live Marketplace.

Reading the PS forums I don't think Qore is going over well. I certainly wouldn't pay for mostly advertising for new games and movies from Sony. I can deal with ads that can't be skipped if the content is free, but I'm not paying for the privilege.

I might pick up an issue if it had something really awesome like an included game or something, but so far it seems everything included is fluff and most of the same info is available free online.

Issue 3 of Qore is supposed to let you access the Resistance 2 beta.

Just FYI, I believe the Resistance devs have gone on record stating that there will be other ways besides Qore to get into the beta, possibly by pre-ordering or through other methods.

That's just it, everything in Qore is an ad for something. All the games featured are technically ads to get you interested in the developer/publisher's product.

That's like paying for a disc full of movie trailers that also has ads in between each one.

It was in the issue with the snowboarding game on the cover, I just got it this past week. It's on the last page facing the back cover, at the bottom of the page, and should be good for issue 1. You have to go to account management, not the storefront, to enter in the code.

I think my subscription to PSM was 5 dollars, maybe less. Even the regular subscription rate you can get at Amazon is 18 bucks, which is cheaper than Qore. PSM is usually the most worthless of my subs anyway, since there's so little that's interesting coming out just for the PSP or PS3. (I'm not trying to flame here, but even after the redesign the magazine isn't that compelling). So I'm not sure how good Qore is going to be until some really cool stuff comes out for either console.

Technically, PSM is no more. Now it's PTOM. I think it sucks worse since the format change. Where was the free Qore code? In an ad or an inset?

It wasn't in an ad or an insert, it was a printed code (which I assume is unique to each subscriber or whatever) at the bottom of the next issue blurb at the very end of the magazine.

edited to add:

Also, I guess the Socom beta just isn't available yet, so I didn't miss out on it. Sorry for the misinformation earlier.

I just got Gran Turismo: Prologue, and, does anyone know why the controller mappings are reset when there's an update? I read something about quick tune (which I can't use until I complete the events of course) calculations being tweaked, but why do the basic controller mappings have to be reset to default?

I had to change the defaults when I started, and I had to change them again after downloading the update. August 1st, I get to do it again.

This isn't just a few buttons; there are quite a few things to map if you want to get into the realtime adjustments. Those aren't even mapped to the controller, so even if you're happy with the defaults you still have to assign them if you want to use them.

Is there actually a good reason why they do this? If they can save my prize money, I don't see why they can't save the button assignments.

Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that a PS3 firmware update (v2.42) is now available for download. This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.
in other words, it does something but we won't tell you
