I'm getting ready to pick up my PS3 (finally) from Wal-Mart, and was going to get the HDMI > DVI cable while there. It was mentioned that i should also get something for the audio - can someone recommend what I need so that i can get it today as well?

I'm a single-player only type of guy, I've never played online. I'm sure that has plenty to do with my ignorance.
I don't know about "bragging rights", but I do know that it's nice to get "something" for one's time and effort. Hearing the 360's "plink!" sound and seeing the little achievement window pop up telling you what you just did is very satisfying. Particularly if it's a nice chunk of points or points for something cool.

[obligatory post]You should get your cables at Monoprice instead.[/obligatory post] You'll need an optical cable for 5.1 sound if your receiver can't accept an HDMI cable

Are there 2 outputs on the PS3 - one for the video to the TV and another for the audio to my HT receiver?

There are no analog outs on the PS3. Just one HDMI out and one optical out.

I think there's technically 3. 1 HDMI, 1 Digital Audio (optical), and one combo A/V port for your analog cables - which you won't be using.

Agreed about monoprice, waiting on shipping sucks but you could have asked us before you were picking the thing up so you could have your cables already

If you really wanted to set it all up today with the fullest potential, I would recommend buying the cables at wal-mart as well, opening them carefully, and returning them once the monoprice shipment comes in (by saturday I would imagine).

Buy these (unless you need longer/shorter than 6ft):

Edit: Sorry, forgot you said HDMI/DVI cable before. I think this is what you want, but might want to get confirmation from someone else - maybe in the HD forum, just in case. Customer reviews on monoprice indicate it will work with the PS3 just fine, though:

Not directly on the back of the PS3. You have to use the cable attached to the A/V multi-out port.

my TV has the DVI input with the L/R audio RCAs under it .. I used a HDMI>DVI cable into the DVI input, and then the AV cable into the L/R RCA .. is that it (until my digital audio cable and cheaper DVI cable arrive) ?

It comes with the cable so isn't that the same thing?

Yes, you can do that, you can pick separate settings for audio and video.

Thanks! I'm currently at 25%. It's crawling, as expected, and as is customary. Looking forward to checking it out when it installs.

Sweet. Maybe that'll revive my interest in it.

Either I'm incredibly patient or I have the fastest PS3 in the world. I started the DL at 12:08 and my system just restarted at 12:10.

Wait, so all the "medals" I've earned in Uncharted don't translate into "trophies"?

I ended up just leaving mine on in the background while I surfed the web. It could have anywhere from 15 to 30 mins, I'm really not sure.

Well, I'm glad I got the secret "turbo" version. 2 minutes to download a system update and another 2 minutes to install it doesn't fit my definition of "crawling". I can certainly live with that.

The 2.4 download wasn't too bad, but the Super Stardust HD update took almost a half hour. Could you ever imagine an update of an XBLA game that took a half hour to download? There would be non-stop bitching for days.

Yeah, the trophies aren't retroactive from old saves since you could just download a save somewhere and unlock them all.

everything was slow because tons of people were updating at the same time. I was booted of the system multiple times before finally downloading.
