Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
I've been in a Gamestop twice recently, and I feel it only fair to point out that my experience there was fine. The clerk dude was pretty knowledgeable and not pushy at all. Granted, that should be the norm, but this one branch provided me with a good shopping experience.
I still hate some of their used game pricing though. Used copies of Call of Duty 4 are marked $55. Grid is $45. That just seems a little wonky to me. But I guess if people are still paying that price, who am I to say they should charge less.
Still, it makes the B2G1 "deal" a bit less appealing, when you could pay the same price with a tiny bit of leg work on eBay, Amazon, and the like. B2G1 is the shit for really cheap/old games though.

I only go in there for the occasional exclusive. The only two that come to mind are the Little Big Planet w/Kratos code and Bioshock for the Big Daddy figure.
I browse from time to time, but don't ever buy anything.

When I was there last week picking up Halo Wars, the store manager was ranting to this guy about how Bungie didn't make Halo Wars and isn't making Halo ODST, but how they are making Halo 4 for the new X-Box coming out in 2010 called the Gearbox. Oh, and only half of the original 360 games will be backward compatible. I was cracking up.

It is times like this when they have the buy 2 get 1 free on used that I go. I was finally able to get some stuff I had missed like the new DS Castlevania, Buzz on PS3, new Scene It, Rock Band 2, Disgaea 3 and so on for decent prices.
I won't trade in games or buy stuff new, but I will take advantage of other people getting ripped off on their trades when they are reselling them this cheap.

Well, Gearbox did work on the original Halo, so I guess there's some kernel of truth in that you could make a truthful statement with the words "Gearbox," "Halo," and "Bungie." But "Bungie is making Halo 4 for the new Gearbox system" is not it.

I've also seen various occasions where GS will make limited edition versions of games sound like GS exclusives, when they really aren't - another example of their bullshit shenanigans.

Yeah, they have a huge "GAMESTOP EXCLUSIVE" sticker on their box of Nintendo Monopoly (board game, not video game) when I bought the exact same game (in a different shaped box, mind you) at JCPenney last year.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Had some good experiences with Gametop recently. Bought a lot during their B2g1 deal, 9 games total, 3 $54.99 games, 3 $17.99 games, 3 $9.99 and less games. I take LBP and L4D and one of the $17.99 games because I didn't like them. I forgot my receipt and the guy was like no problem since he saw that they sold on the day I gave him, gives me full credit of $130 in store credit (which I originally used anyway). I go check out another store after I find my receipt and return the remaining 2 $17.99 games and a $9.99 game. The clerk tells me that they return whatever the price says on the receipt, so if it shows up as a 0.00 (your free game) don't return that one. I spend that money on a absolute mint copy of Nocturne on PS2 w/cd for ~$30 when it goes for $60+ on ebay. Plus with the 40% when you trade it six or more I used it as an opportunity to unload all my less valuable games from buying lots off people that are disc only, marked up with stickers or in terrible shape. It's surprising they still give full value (albeit low value) to that stuff.

I took advantage of the trade 2 games on list and get Resident Evil 5 for $20. So I traded in Tomb Raider underworld (bought for $15) and Armored Core For Answer (bought for $20) so I actually came ahead.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
About a week ago I went in to buy Call of Duty: World at War since the price dropped to $40. I told the guy I wanted to buy a new copy and surprise!, out comes the gutted copy. I ask for a sealed copy and he says he doesn't have any. I shrug him off and leave. I actually managed to get a sealed on at a GS around the corner.
However, I actually had a somewhat pleasant experience yesterday at Gamestop. I was standing in line as the following took place:
Customer #1:
- The windup: Mom is buying Modern Warfare for her 16 year old son. They inform her it's pretty violent (M-rating and all).
- The pitch: Did you know you can get this game for $54.99 used? Mom is ecstatic and sold.
- Home run: Did you know you can pre-order Modern Warfare 2 and get some exclusive goboldy gook item?
- Grand Slam: Mom to son, do you want it for Christmas? Yes, we'll take it. Hook. Line. Sinker. (at least they didn't have to pull out the 'biggest game of the year and it will be hard to find' bullshit tactic.
Customer #2
- 14-is looking kid looking to get Gears of War 2, so they ask for I.D.
He has none so he drags his mom in from the car.
Customer #3
- me: I would like to pre-order The Beatles: Rock Band and Halo: ODST (LE) on the 360
- clerk: cha-ching!
- clerk: would you also like to pre-order Modern Warfare 2?
- me:
I'm already pre-ordering two games (model GS consumer) I would have told you if I wanted to pre-order another. Sheesh. It wasn't a deal breaker but definitely amusing.
So kudos to them for being informative about the content of Modern Warfare to the mom and actually carding the young kid on Gears.
Too bad they still ram the pre-orders down your throat even when you are already pre-ordering multiple titles from them.
It sucks that 'mom' was sold on the used copy for a mere $5 discount as well.

Good to see they're asking for ID/permission. If they continue to do that voluntarily, no one else (government) has to get involved.
Why does it suck that mom was sold on a used copy for 5 bucks less? I certainly wouldn't mind if it was a greater discount, but in general, "Would you like to save 8% by buying a preowned, but virtually identical and fully functional version of the same thing, that also has the additional benefit of being returnable within 7 days" doesn't sound like a bad deal at all. Is it just that GS making money is bad?
A third preorder on top of two preorders, yeah, that's a little too aggressive. I'm sure it's in their script: "ask everyone if they want to preorder something".

Now if we were talking $35 used vs. $60 new, then yeah, I'd be all over it myself.
