I purchased PlayOn for Hulu streaming, but it seems like the Wii keeps going to sleep, or at least starts to get tired because the video dims after ten or so minutes. Any way to stop that?

The component cables are a night and day difference to me on the Wii. Composite cables make it look blurry.

Agreed. Component cables made a very noticeable difference for me as well (I have the monoprice version).

That's great to hear. All we have for the Wii so far are the Wii Sports & Resort games, so the image doesn't need to be that sharp anyway, but it's good to know that when we get some real Wii games, they'll look better. For that price, it's a no-brainer. I should have bought cables for my mother's and in-laws' Wiis as well, but it didn't occur to me until after I completed my purchase unfortunately.

make sure you set the settings to progressive and widescreen. you should notice a pretty big difference in any wii game when using the component vs composite.

im hoping nintendo announces "HD Wii" at E3 with HDMI out, 50GB Hard Drive, extra USB Slots, Blu-Ray, Avi/MKV, DTS, etc... but that would be too good to be true

I'd like HDMI out and video games rendered in HD, but I personally I don't care much about additional "media center" capabilities on the Wii's successor. The more complexity added, the more expensive and less reliable it will be (see all the Xbox360 and PS3 issues). I'd prefer they keep it simple and low cost, with the focus on fun, great-looking games, ultra-precise motion controls, and better online multiplayer implementation. Leave the media center capabilities to the countless other CE devices trying to be an all-in-one solution.

This. Also, with Nintendo's track record on trying to do "other" things (GBA video, mp3 playback, et al), I would rather they just stick with what they are good at and avoid trying to do too much.

Caveat Emptor: Wii purchases aren't forever

By now, consumers are accustomed to buying digital, downloadable content once, and only once. Replace your iPhone, for example, and you'll find your app purchases are waiting for installation -- and the same is true for dedicated games machines like the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, and the PSP.


But it's not the case for Nintendo's DSi and Wii consoles, where downloaded games are registered to a specific piece of hardware, not an individual consumer. And as those consumers are finding, when they replace their consoles with new or upgraded models, the only way for them to retrieve the games they've paid for is to plead their case to a Nintendo customer service rep, and -- if they're lucky -- go through a time-consuming and tedious recovery process.

And they're getting mixed results, according to a recent article in Wired, which interviewed a number of consumers who've tried to transfer purchases to new consoles. Some were successful, but one, who had gone through two broken Wii consoles, was not -- and even those who've managed to coax Nintendo into helping them out aren't impressed with the service.

We spoke to one consumer who had a similar experience after his early model Wii failed.

"The only way to get my games back was to talk to Nintendo's customer service line, and they made it seem like they were doing me a favor," he told us. "I had to send the broken Wii and the new one back to Nintendo, at my own expense, and they transferred the games for me. It took about two weeks before I got my Wii back."

Contrast that with the Xbox's system, where your Xbox Live credentials are all you need to redownload all the games you own, and the PlayStation Network, where users can share their purchases across numerous consoles. On the PC and Mac, Valve's popular Steam distribution system lets you download your games to as many different computers as you want. Nintendo's online store is obviously behind the times.


The black Wii is the latest version of the modern Nintendo classic.

Which is curious, for such an innovative hardware company, and as Nintendo continues to improve and expand its range, it's going to become an increasingly pressing problem. The Wii recently become available in black, prompting some fashion-conscious consumers to want to trade up -- and the fifth iteration of the world's best-selling DS handheld, boasting innovative 3D screens, will launch later this year. Nearly 50 million DSs are already in the hands of US consumers, and Nintendo is surely expecting a good number of them to want to make the jump to 3D.

You'd think they'd want to make it easy.

It's good to keep the word out there though. I loved the WiiWare/Virtual Console concept early on, picking up dozens of games, but once I heard about the lack of the ability to move the games to another system, I stopped cold-turkey, because the value of spending $10 for a N64 game wasn't there.

Yeah... haven't bought a VC game since I sold my first Wii and realized I couldn't transfer them to a new Wii that I got for the family last Christmas. I love the way PSN is set up... I hope Nintendo follows suit.

Well, that news indirectly shows why Nintendo hasn't rushed a Hard Drive accessory for the Wii. They believe people will buy over and over those WiiWare/VC games when the system breaks down and the user buys a new one.

Ok, hate to get all Wii-Scott on you, but I'm just a little taken aback now. I just played a "real" Wii game (i.e. a non-Wii Sports waggle game) for the first time, in SMG2. Being a lefty, I was a little stumped in how to use the controller. The natural feeling thing to do is hold the wiimote in my left hand and point at the screen like a gun. But this being the first time I've ever used a nunchuck, I'm finding that it's really hard to control movement with my right hand -- it goes against every console game I've played in the past three generations of consoles; it just feels weird. By switching hands, I was much better at controlling Mario, but it makes aiming with the wiimote much harder (which really isn't such a big deal in this game yet, but I can only imagine how hard it must make FPS games).
Other lefties : which way are you holding your wiimote and nunchucks? This is definitely going to take some time to get used to.

Nintendo transfers your purchases for all repairs (if done through them).

Also, I bought a black Wii, gave them a call and they set up a ticket to have all my stuff transferred at no cost due to the large amount of stuff I've downloaded. I actually got mine back last night and while they transferred my Wii Shop account to the new system, they left all my other shit on the old system (saves, Miis, message board data, etc.). I suppose I couldn't care much less about the Miis (I redid mine in about a minute) and almost all my save data can be copied over via an SD card (exept for Smash, which I don't really play), but (and I know this is silly and petty), I'm mostly annoyed by my message board data being stuck on the old machine! I liked the play time records it kept through the Nintendo Channel.

I'm going to give the guy that helped me out a call this afternoon to see what he has to say on it. To be honest, I'd love to get the full transfer that I asked for but since the important stuff can be copied manually and since I have Super Mario Galaxy 2 in my hands, I'll probably just forget about it, unless they offer next-day shipping or something due to their error.

wiimote in left hand, nunchuck in right for the most part. Occasionally, I will find myself switching up because I'm still not used to it entirely. It just feels funny. Hence why I find myself more often than not, looking at the back of my Wii games and for the most part sticking to ones who are compatible with classic controller. If my wife didn't like it, I probably would have bought a PS3 instead to go along with the 360.

I'm guessing there are probably contractual issues at play as well, but it's hard to say.
