Save $10 on any 360 game at Target stores

Taking a breather from all the Gears of War 2 and general Spring Showcase news that has been taking over X3F, we bring you a money saving deal from the fine folks at Target.

Posted over on Oxidative's Picasa album is a printable $10 off ANY Xbox 360 game coupon for Target stores, with an expiration date of June 9th. And it doesn't restrict the savings to only regular priced items! The only wrinkle to this $10 savings is that the coupon specifically states that it's "Void if copied", but we've been informed that Target is really good about accepting most any printed coupons. That said, in our interest of not be blamed for anything, we're slapping a fat YMMV tag on this offer. It's worth a shot though, so print, shop and possibly save $10 on your next game purchase.

I can confirm that that coupon won't work on XBLM Point Cards :)

Xbox 360 hits 10 million sold in U.S.
Daniel Terdiman

Microsoft said on Wednesday that its Xbox 360 has become the first next-generation video game console to hit 10 million units sold in the United States.

Further, said Adam Greenberg, PR manager for the Xbox senior group, that milestone has historically been reached by the eventual best-seller of each previous console generation, a fact that Microsoft will certainly be using to bolster suggestions that the Xbox 360 will eventually prevail sales-wise over Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3.

Of course, Sony has been the winner of the two previous generations, with the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 far outselling the competition.

In the U.S., according to NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier--as of the end of March, Microsoft's rivals, Nintendo, and Sony had sold 8.8 million Wiis and 4.1 million PlayStation 3's in the United States, respectively.

All told, Microsoft has sold 19 million Xboxes worldwide, Greenberg said.

In addition, he reported that globally, Microsoft's Xbox Live service has reached 12 million total users, more than doubling the 6 million it reported last July.

"Our goal was to hit 10 million (Xbox Live users) in a year's time," Greenberg said, "and we've doubled it in less time. The majority of Xbox owners on a global basis are connecting to Xbox Live."

Another milestone the Xbox recently reached, Greenberg said, was that with more than 1 million copies of Rockstar Games' monster hit, Grand Theft Auto IV, having already sold on Xbox 360, the console has now reached 16 different titles with 1 million sales or more in the U.S.

By comparison, he pointed out, that's twice the number of million-plus titles that have sold for the Wii in the U.S. The PlayStation 3 has had just two, he said.

While the 10 million total Xboxes sold in the United States is certainly notable, it also must be noted that the console had a full year's head start on its competition.

Greenberg acknowledged that that means it's hard to compare sales numbers in an apples-to-apples fashion, but added that he thinks the head start gives Microsoft advantages that Sony and Nintendo will never be able to catch up to.

"I don't think you can underestimate the benefit of the year head start," he said. "We have a larger library, a larger online community. There's benefits to that acceleration."

Additionally, because the Xbox has been on the market a year longer, Microsoft has been able to reduce the costs of production sooner than its rivals, Greenberg said.

"It's hard to play catch-up," he said.

More recently, Greenberg explained, the huge success of GTA IV has been a boon to the Xbox. He explained that Microsoft's initial data suggested that in the first week the game was on the market, fully 40 percent of Xboxes sold at retail were bought by people who also purchased GTA IV.

That certainly seems like good news for Microsoft and backs up suggestions by industry analysts who predicted that GTA IV would drive a significant number of sales of the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, the two consoles the game was released on.

On Thursday, NPD will release its April sales figures for the U.S. video game industry.

Psh hardly a success, the Wii is only 1.2 away and was launched a year later.

fumanstan 05-14-08 04:58 PM

Considering their position last generation, I think even being ahead at all regardless of the year head start is a good thing for Microsoft. It easily could have been another Dreamcast like many people believed was possible.

If it was on CAG a week ago, I imagine it can be found at 100s of sites/blogs now, if not 6 days ago.

I got that coupon in the mail a few days ago. Too bad about the point cards. That would have been a good deal.

some have been able to get the points card, just requires an override by the checker for it to work...take it to the front register, not the electronics one

And if Microsoft drops the price before Christmas, watch their sales grow again, rapidly.

Seriously, nothing right now beats XBox Live and they have a great catalog of games.

And we are not hearing of people (here) who have stopped playing their 360's due to a lack of good games, like we are in the Wii thread.

Of course I've got both and don't play either of them. They are for my friends to play when they come over! :D

some have been able to get the points card,
I can confirm that; the rationale is that you're going to buy software via the Live store.

I use mine for both games on Live and music for my Zune.

Now you tell me! I'm going to have to try again tonight.

I mean the coupon that's floating around. I have personally used it to buy a 1600 point card; my rationale to the cashier was that I'm using it to buy software via Live.

I see. What are the point cards considered? Software or Accessories? Seems like every time there is a coupon like this the card never seems to fit the criteria.

pinata242 05-15-08 12:10 PM

It's considered an accessory (at least at Best Buy). I told the cashier that I was going to buy games with it, like Rob, however my mistake was trying the electronics kid instead of the regular cashiers.

In case you guys can't get the $10 Target coupon to work on points, speedy has posted that Target it going to have the 1600 pt cards on sale next week (May 25th) for $15. Could be super-awesome for those of us who have gotten the $10 off coupon to work on points. $5 1600 pt cards sound sweet as hell!

pinata242 05-19-08 07:00 AM

I was able to get 4 1600 point cards with the $10 coupon. Since the receipt didn't adjust the price of the points down to $9.99 individually, I'm gonna try to get $20+tax back in price matching. Thanks for the heads up!

Trevor 05-21-08 09:41 AM

Have too many points from the last few deals, but might try it for grins.

Was able to easily use the coupon on some clearance games. Scans and takes the $10 off automatically. Got Cars and a couple of the game download cards for free. Passed on a free Madden 07 and The Bigs. I'm hopefully past the point of buying games that I know I'll never play, just because they're cheap or even free.

edstein 05-22-08 09:00 PM

I got my 360 back from service today, shipped out last Friday. I did compare S/N's and I got my console back. I did get a new faceplate and the power supply was replaced with the 2 prong version like the Elite. Also got the 1 month Live card as well. Anyone know what the warranty is on a replaced/repaired unit?

Microsoft to axe underperforming Xbox Live titles

Microsoft has said that it will be removing underperforming Xbox Live Arcade titles from its console download service.

Titles that have suffered an average review score of less than 65 per cent and have a trial conversion rate of 6 per cent will be taken off the service after a three month grace period, reports Gamasutra.

The move comes following confirmation that Microsoft is to raise the file limit of game downloads to 350MB.

Microsoft will not be releasing a spring update for the Xbox 360 dashboard as it has done in the past, but wil instead work on server issues

The firm will also establish a new internal develoment team focused on downloadable content.
