Halo 3 for sure. First time playing the franchise, and couldn't understand what all of the hoopla was about. I much preferred Bioshock, Mass Effect, R6V, Assassin's Creed, etc.

So, for a reader of the review who doesn't play multi, at least he was making them aware that he had reservations about the campaign component of the game.
Maybe I'm missing something in my older age, but a 10/10 used to mean perfect.

And just to clarify: Overrated - as in professional reviews vs. what you experienced.

1. There is no such thing as a perfect game. Games are multifaceted. If someone only buys Halo for multiplayer only would it not be a 10/10 experience? Wouldn't the campaign be gravy at that point? The only gripe I can see with Halo's scores are if you are only buying for the single player, and it was noted in the majority of reviews about the length.

2. Reviewers all seem to be in line and I don't think any were 'overrated.' Overhyped maybe, but not overrated.

Some of these choices are really off the wall. Bioshock? What were you expecting?

I'd have to say Lair.

I would say Guitar Hero 3 and Halo 3.

Mmm ya. GHIII was really, really a disappointment to me. I finished up the Medium setlist while I've been home, and have no interest in trying the boss battles on Hard or whatnot. I think I'll stick with Rock Band.

Maybe he thought even the low scores were too high...

I guess it was more "overhyped" than "overrated"

If there's no such thing as a perfect score then in my opinion the score should reflect that. Give Halo3 a 9.9/10 if you think it just misses being perfect. I didn't think the graphics were the best possible. I didn't think the controls were the best possible. I didn't think the length of the game was the best possible. Reviewers seemed to agree, but still gave it a 10/10. Overrated. I feel I must restate that I really liked the game.

Your point about hype is well taken. I did get all hyped up for Halo3, and it contributed to my disappointment. But I was hyped up for Mario 64, and it still blew me away. It may still be the biggest "wow!" game for me. It offered so many things that had never been done before.

Halo III averaged out to about 93% when all was said and done, go off that instead of what a few fansites rated. Correlates better too, and helps make games like the Ninjabread man look less awful (generally a 1 out of 10, but a few 3 brings it up to 20%)

Ok, what game is really a 10/10? I want reviewers pointing out the flaws of games even if they loved them, and I don't mind the 10/10 if they point out what they liked and didn't like in the review.

Besides, they're only the opinions of one person anyway.

None. Every game delivered to my expectations. Guitar Hero 3 may be great but it's not my cup of tea so I'm not gonna say I was disappointed. Same with FPS. I like Bioshock and Halo 3 but I'm not gonna say they were the greatest games ever because I'm not a huge fan of FPS. I can pretty much get into any movie that critics unaminously praise but not so with games. If it's a game I have zero interest in and every critic on the planet says it's the greatest game ever, well I still have zero interest in it.

Halo 3 is overrated because the fanboys are crazy about it. If you just play it without all the hype, it is a solid game with alot of replayability (co-op campaign is probably the best).

How about UT3? Does anyone even play that game?

So a multiplayer only game can never get a 10? Certainly, a single player only game, Bioshock, received a number of 10s, and historically many single player only games have received 10s (notably Nintendo's titles). Anyway, Michael Corvin pretty much said it, but there are some reviewers out there who would have given multi only Halo 3 a 10/10, because they were so blown away by Forge, Bungie.org intergration, Videos etc. In my mind, as long as the reviewer is giving his reasoning in the review text, then he has done his service to the reader, and it's up to the reader to at least make the effort to browse through the review rather than just taking the number at the top/bottom.

Furthermore, in 1UP's case, they don't consider 10 to be a perfect game. They have discussed on their podcast that they don't believe that a perfect game exists or ever will exist (yes, Zelda OOT is not a perfect game), and since they give scores in whole numbers then why have a number that will never be used? Anyway, I guess you can argue with them about it but that's what they've said multiple times.

NBA Street Homecourt (PS3)

One of the most butt ugly and bad to play ballers I have ever experienced. NBA Jam it is not. Reviews were overall pretty good for this one but I found it a total waste of time.

My vote goes to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Sure, it's a damn pretty game to look at, but the sloppy and semi-responsive hand-to-hand combat, overly simplistic platforming, and the repetitive locations, enemies, and combat really makes this a sub-par game in my opinion, and not nearly as deserving of the praise it has received.

Like ChrisD said, EGM/1up has discussed this on their podcast.

In regards to Halo, Shoe said the way he looked at it was multiplayer was a 10, Forge made it a hypothetical 11. Single player was a 9. So if you average out 9 and 11 you get your 10.

As for games that are really a 10/10? Only one that comes to mind this year is Bioshock. The atmosphere and storytelling were on another level. The only cons with the game were the final boss and ending. The game was all about the journey, not the destination, so it is easy to overlook a couple small things in the big picture. The experience is still a 10.

Halo 3 and Mario Galaxy are close, but I think they both fall of a 10 just a tad.

For me, it's Metroid Prime 3 and Mass Effect.

I'm still playing Mass Effect, but it seems like the more I play it, the less I like it. I doubt I'll go back and play Metroid.

Gromit, what would you give Metroid 3? I think the typical review was an 8.7/10. I just finished it, and I'd agree with the score. Just curious.

For me, it's Bioshock by far. I know a lot of you love it, but I really don't get all the fuss over this game. People seem to think it's the second coming or something. Granted it's far from a bad game, but I don't think it's as great as everyone says. I never felt the need to even finish it.

Bioshock gets a lot of props from me for its setting. I love the art deco style. Same with Assassin's Creed - I love the medieval ages during the Crusades. I wish more publishers would release games that take place centuries ago. Instead we get countless future and military based games. Couldn't we get a game where you storm the beach of Troy or assassinate Ceasar?
