Any tips for a newbie...or is it just one of those games where you either got it or you don't? Don't get me wrong...I really like the game and enjoy playing it but it hurts my ego to know that I will never get past medium difficulty.

And I was looking over the achievement list for GHIII and Woah!!! These have to be the hardest list of achievement's ever. Definitely a game where I will not even attempt to get the achievements on it. If I get some of them by playing casually...fine...but so many of the seem so unattainable that I am not even going to try.

I bought it on release day. Never played any of the previous GH's or a real guitar for that matter. My pinky finger was retarded as well at first. Now it is just second nature to use it. Just keep at it, it will come to a point where you aren't even thinking about what button to push, your fingers just do it for you.

I can 5 star every song on medium, except TTFAF. The problem with TTFAF for me seems to be just being able to strum correctly. I've seen some youtube clips that show the player strumming both up and down. I can't do that. I strum down only.

Hard is a completely different animal. I 3 starred Slow Ride the first time I played it, then Talk Dirty To Me just completely handed me my ass. I haven't tried hard again yet. I don't know if I will be able to get used to moving my hand to hit the orange button.

This is one of those games where the saying, "practice makes perfect" truly comes into play. I played my friends copy of Guitar Hero II and could barely finish a song on Easy. Afterwards, I decided to get a copy and after hours of playing, I was ready for medium, after a few days more playing, I took on hard. Hard took me along time and I never bothered with expert , but I still had a blast. Just keep practicing.

Yes, that is exactly right. And unless they've patched it, it has to be done in quick play as well.

Well it looks like my second guitar is definitely going back to the store. I dealt with the looseness of the neck by layering some electrical tape in the gap where it connects to the base, but now my strum bar is squeeking. *sigh*

Unfortunately, I need to pass it in order to advance my career.

Well, I'm a dirty cheater and yet I still can't pass TTFAF.

I'm using the rubber band trick (put a rubber band around the green note to hold it down) to get past the intro, but then I failed at 78% and 82%. Even using the rubber band it took me a good 15-20 tries to get past the intro. The timing or the lag or how fast you have to release the notes kept screwing me. I gave up on hammering on and now i strum every note except the green. The rest of the song isn't that bad but starting around 70% it just seems to go into a never ending solo. The first time I didn't have SP and the second time I used it early, got past where I failed the first time SP ran out and then I died soon after. I will pass this song, and I won't feel bad about cheating

I was having troubles with the 80ish% part, then made the same reazlization as I made with the "One" solo, which was that I simply wasn't strumming fast enough. I started strumming faster and passed it twice in a row (I was trying for the "Star Mania" achievement both times, then found out about having to do it in quickplay). Of course, the last couple days when I've broken quite a few of my high scores (or passed TTFAF), my scores aren't updating on the website (they will show up in the "recently played" box, but not update in the song lists). I wanted to reclaim my songs before leaving for a good while for Rock Band, but the site would have nothing to do with that .

I wouldn't even consider it cheating or even a trick (using a rubber band), it's just like using a capo. I haven't even tried to pass TTFAF yet, but when I first unlocked it I practiced the intro by putting a guitar capo on the green button and still failed (can't let go of the non-green notes fast enough yet).

Same here, I just can't take my finger off fast enough. I thought it would be just a tad faster than the ending to message in a bottle off of GHII, which is easy to ace. Stupid song. Stupid stupid stupid.

For those that use hyperspeed: what setting do you use it at? After being stubborn and having everyone tell me how much easier the game was with it for a while, I finally tried it out and noticed a marked improvement in my scores. This was on Hard / Expert on Hyper: 2. I messed around with Hyper: 5, but that's pretty insane. O_o

Exactly. Interestingly enough, while using my "capo" I could routinely get 3x and 4x streaks going. Not just once, but usually a good streak every time I tried it even if I later failed. I still never picked up a single star power through the intro in all my attempts. I always miss the last note in the first star power and some note in the middle of the second one, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong at all.

butthole. I did the capo last night and still couldn't come close to pulling off fast enough. On one step slower I can do that entire part perfect over and over, it even feels really slow like I could do it twice as fast. Maybe my brain is just getting in the way.

Are you strumming all the non-green notes? That's what I'm doing and everytime I miss a note I just think to myself "pull off faster". Since the first time I passed the intro I haven't failed during it, and I realized I could hold star power in the big solo until the crazy part at 82%. Now that that's out of the way I can work on score. It always seems like I never have star power on the parts I do well, but I always have it engaged right when a long held note comes up

How are you guys engaging star power? I feel like I have to make a forceful grand gesture to engage it.

It's the opposite with me - I'm using the Xplorer and I have to consciously not shake the guitar to avoid inadvertently setting it off... I should just think about baseball.

About half of the time when I raise the guitar for star power it messes me up and I miss the next note. I think that rate would go up if I tried to hit the button.

My Wii Les Paul has SP go off all the time when I don't want it too. I think it's the general shaking during fast parts. It loves to go off during the Spider Walk in Raining Blood and before the crazy solo in One. When I was passing TTFAF I was leaned over about 30 degrees to the left so that the guitar was pointing down so there would be no chance it would go off. I started using the tilt method with GH3, but it's still not super accurate so in the past week or two I've gone back to having the side of my palm activate by pressing the button.
