Has anyone here tried Pinball FX online multiplay?
Tried it for the first time the other day and it is fun. I never can get a ranked game going since there is never anyone just playing mulitplayer like that but creating a custom game and playing each other until the other person hits the max points while making conversation is fun. Good stuff. And if anyone wants to assist me in getting the online Frogger achievement (co-op game and get 30,000 points combined), I would like to hear from you. Thanks. |
Two new games this week:
Boost your brain power with “Word Puzzle,” a new spin on the classic word search game, and make Sir Isaac Newton proud as you embrace the laws of physics with “Switchball” on Xbox LIVE Arcade. Both games will be available this Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. GMT (2:00 a.m. PST). The traditional pen and paper word search game is taken to a whole new level this week as InterServ brings “Word Puzzle” to Xbox LIVE Arcade. This brain-busting game features intricate 3D boards, exploding word bombs and a whole host of synapse melting challenges and special effects. With five unique game modes, LIVE support for up to four players and Xbox LIVE Vision Camera support, “Word Puzzle” will keep you playing with friends and family for hours. The game will be available worldwide for 800 Microsoft Points and is rated E. For more details on “Word Puzzle,” please visit http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/w/wo...de/default.htm In “Switchball,” players conquer breathtakingly beautiful labyrinthine mazes as they manipulate the unique physical properties of an ever-changeable ball to solve clever puzzles. Morph into the Metalball and ram objects out of your way, charge the Powerball to dash up ramps and jump over obstacles, switch to the Airball to float over physics based death traps or use the Marbleball for speedy rolling around action. Created by Sierra Online, “Switchball” empowers players to harness the laws of physics and triumphantly roll their way through five elegantly detailed 3D environments or they can join friends in 2 player co-op or 8 player competitive racing fun through Xbox LIVE. The game will be available worldwide (with the exception of Korea) for 800 Microsoft Points and is rated E. For more details on “Switchball” please visit http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/s/sw...de/default.htm |
I knew the word search was going to be 800 pts, since the price is listed in the OXM review. Still I'm surprised by it. It sure looks and seems more like a 400 pt game to me.

Actually FSUNole1998 and I tried it on Sunday and damn, 30,000 points, even combined, in Frogger is tough. I think the most we got to was around 24,000 points but had fun in the process. And I would love to know how the hell to get the achievement which has you get all your frogs home on the first level in 45 seconds or less. There's just no way. |
Damn. May have to get both of those games.

Switchball is a fun game. Anyone who likes action/puzzle games should check out the demo, which gives you a pretty good feel for the gameplay. I bought the full version after finishing the second demo level. If anyone else gets this, I'm curious to check out the co-op levels.
On the other hand, Word Puzzle really didn't impress me. If they had added some other styles of gameplay beyond the standard word search, it could've been good. As it is now, it's just too simplistic, especially at 800 points. |
I remember when I got the Co-op brilliance achievement in Frogger. I was weird because I was playing with a buddy of mine, and he died on the 3rd level, and I kept going. When I eventually got our total score above 30,000 I got the achievement but he didn't. I'm not sure if that was an isolated glitch, or if both players have to be alive when you hit 30,000.

IIRC, if you and a partner manage to get the 30,000 and the achievement, player 1 can pause while player 2 quits and player 1 can invite someone new from their friends list. Supposedly as soon as the new player 2 hops (har har) in, the game sees that they have 30,000 and gives them the achievement. Wash, rinse, repeat for your entire friends list. I haven't gotten the 30k to begin with so I haven't had a chance to test it out. This was at the game's launch though which also had a bug that let you use 7 frogs and still get achievements. I know the game has had an update since but no idea if both of those were fixed. |

I would be interested to see if anyone here uses it regularly. The stick on the Xbox controller is not perfect but it works far better than this joystick. The MadCatz one was the first one I looked at, I liked the price and the included games, but have been burned by MadCatz in the past. That seemed to be verified by user reviews talking about the looseness of the stick. I really liked the look, reviews, and build of the Hori Fighting Stick EX2, but it's $59.99. It's also called the Virtua Fighter 5 stick since it comes with stickers to decorate it as such. It's a followup to a Dead or Alive 4 stick they made last year. http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Xbox-360-...4564819&sr=8-2 I finally said f it and haven't regreted it since. It's heavy duty and well made. Big and heavy enough to sit on your lap and give you good leverage, but not so big and heavy that it's uncomfortable. I am not big on fighting games, so I can't tell you how well it works with those (I would assume well since it's made for them) but it works great for XBLA games. The stick part feels just like the arcade and it's nice having big buttons to pound on for games like Galaga, Defender, etc. Only problem is that games that use both sticks for moving and firing, like Robotron, Assault Heroes, Heavy Weapon, et al, don't work so well...since there is only one stick. |
Wag, thanks for the info. What's funny is that there are only 2 reviews of the stick on amazon and one of them says to stay far away from any other arcade games except fighter ones (especially Pac-man & Pac-man CE). It would be tough to suck it up and pay $60 for something that may not control the Pac-man games to my liking. I just wish Microsoft would put out an offical stick. Maybe it just isn't possible to make one that feels just like the real arcade ones?
In other news, I bought Streets of Rage 2 and love it. I love spending just 5 bucks for games that I will play over and over in quick snippets. I am a big fan of Final Fight and hope to see that one coming soon. SOR2 plays just like Final Fight but with poorer graphics. Anyone looking to do an online co-op or versus game for SOR2, send me a friend invite or if you are already a friend, send me a message. I would love to try out the co-op portion on this. I tried out the demo for Word Puzzle and did not realize it was a game of doing various "word search" puzzles. I love word search puzzles but I don't know if I want to drop $10 on it. Does anyone have it yet that can give it a review? The demo barely lets you really get into the game so I am curious to see others thoughts who actually own it. Uncle Gramps, did you buy Word Puzzle or just try out the demo? |

There is a glitch(?) on Survival though, to make getting through the whole 8 levels a little easier. It saves after each level, so if you quit out before your time runs out, you can jump right back in at pretty much the same place in the game and try again. I've been stuck on the last level for a while now, and just back out when I'm running out of time. The third mode is Free Play, which has no time limit and no highlighting. This is probably the mode my wife enjoys most, as it's more like a standard word search type thing. I'd say pick it up if you enjoy word puzzles or if you want some quick achievements, as those included are all fairly easy to get. Otherwise, wait until it drops in price or you can pick up some points cheap. |

I guess it's all in the personal feel. Too bad they don't have a hardware rental service too (like Gamefly). I guess you could always buy it from somewhere that has a good return policy and take it back if you didn't dig it. |
There is one survival achievement I have been having a hard time getting.
The last level of survival is insane. |
I've been sinking hours and hours into Puzzle Quest. It's def worth the $15 if you don't own it on another console. It's challenging, but not too much so. A lot of optional sidequests, and the core gameplay is brilliant. Also, my gf loves it, which has to mean something.

Although the joystick hasn't got very good praise, if you missed the Target clearance on the MadCatz arcade controller Xbox360fanboy posted that people have been finding them on clearance at Best Buy for $9.99. Picked up the last one at a local store this afternoon, worth it even for the 3 games (AstroPop, Frogger, and Time Pilot), and I believe Gamestop gives $5-7 trade in for used 360 wired controllers. :)

If anyone got Switchball, I could use some help. I'm on the Ice World Level, Stage 4 I think, and I'm at the part with:
Spoiler:
Thanks - it's driving me insane. |
i started really trying to finish off a few of the 23 arcade games I have.
I just 200/200'd Castlevania in 3 days. Very fun and rewarding I must say. I'm currently tackling geometry wars. I was impressed i finally scored about 700k |
This week marks the 2 year anniversary of the XBLA, as well as the 100th game on the service. They're celebrating it big-time with two games this week.
99. Shrek-N-Roll (or some such drek) 100. Screw-Jumper! [sarcasm]What a great game to mark that 100 game milestone with, MSFT![/sarcasm] |
