Which should I get for free? PS3 or XBOX360?

If you plan on using it for gaming then the 360 is the no-brainer choice.
1. There are great games on the 360 and pretty much none on the PS3
2. The controller is so much better for the 360 so any games that are on both formats I recommend buying the 360 version
3. Xbox Live - way more demos are available than the PS3 and of course Live Arcade games.
I own both a PS3 and a 360 and love both of them. But I don't understand how anyone who owns both could recommend a PS3.

Not necessarily true. I know PLENTY of people who still play Halo 2 non-stop and its been out for what? 3 years already. There are so many games going on still to this day. I still play R6: Vegas on 360 with my friends non-stop and its been out for a year, sure im going to be putting it down for a few weeks and play just Halo 3, butt hen Ill get back into it.
Also keep in mind that pretty soon the xBox 360 is getting an upgraded CPU (65nm supposed to 90nm) the 90nm is what the 360 and PS3 both currently use, to my knowledge. Also, I believe that the PS3 has somewhere around a 40% failure chance after a year, the 360 has about the same, but comes with a three year warranty supposed to Sony's one year warranty. (citation needed) IMO - get 360

I have both..i recommend the PS3 for the blu-ray movies and the 360 for the games. However, next year..it will be PS3 for games and blu-ray for movies
With the 360, expect to go through the trouble in returning it as you WILL get the ring of fire (damage)...but they have a 3 years extended warranty..but the trouble is pretty painful as you can be out for 1 month each time.

Halo 2 - 3 years old
COD2 - 2 years old
GoW - 1 year old
R6:V - 1 year old
all seem to be alive and kicking. Well, can't say that for Halo 2 since yesterday, but that should give you an idea.

I don't have any hard figures, but look around here. Just about everyone with a 360 has had it fail. I don't know if anyone here has had a PS3 fail. At least with most groups of people I know, PS3s are not failing.
And the 360 failure rate is a LOT higher than 40%. MS has admitted that every 360 made (up until July-ish) had a flaw that would eventually lead to failure. Maybe 40% of all units have already failed, but the other 60% will fail.
And before you label me anti-360, I already stated in this thread that I have both and far prefer the 360 for gaming. But to claim that machine (at least earlier builds) was stable and not prone to >40% failure is silly. And accusing the PS3 of having similiar failure rates with no evidence is perhaps even sillier.

How can there be failure rate statistics for a period of time that hasn't even elapsed yet? By my estimation, the PS3 still has 7-8 weeks before it's even been in retail for a year.

I have had a 360 since July of 06. I bought a PS3 this July and owned it for a two weeks. I decided I could do more with the $500 than play PS2 games and watch Blu-Ray movies. It just wasn't worth it.

I have both (and a wii). I have about 10 games for the 360 and play about 10 hours a week if I have the time. I have the planet earth blu-ray set for the ps3 and some PS2 titles I still need to play through. I'm sure good/exclusive games will come out for the ps3 eventually, but as of now nothing sparks my interest. If I only could have one, it would be a 360 all the way.

Since you don't have an HDTV, that leaves out the PS3 right there. My PS3 is a blu-ray playing, PS2/PS1 scaling machine. Oh yeah, and I have Tekken 5 online for it, I play lots of that, but that's it.
Since you don't have HD and have a Wii already, the system with the most/best games wins out : the 360. Use the rest of the points on something else.
I didn't even really like the original xbox, I bought one for $100 to play Street Fighter Anniversary and Guilty Gear online. I had maybe a dozen games for it when I bought the 360 in Febuary. But the 360 has made great strides as far as game selection & variety over the original Xbox.

By the way, I just realized I can use my VGA box to use either the PS3 or 360 with my 19" Dell LCD, so I'll be using that. How good will the graphics be? This way I can take advantage of HDDVD or BR also

Hell, there are Tons of games, other than Halo 2, from the Original XBOX that are still being played. If they were popular online when they were released then most remain popular. I know that "ancient" games like Star Wars:Battlefront I & II (actually most Star Wars games are still popular online), Crimson Skies, and a few others still get tons of players. I've seen this online over the past year.
Meanwhile, some of the next gen games that were never popular and yet they would seem like they would be popular online are all a pain when it comes to finding matches.

Too bad there's not a tracking system that shows the top 10 Live games for a particular day or month, that way I'd know what to buy
Crimson Skies STILL gets matches? Wow.

This list a couple days old but it's still interesting. I'll bet there is a list somewhere that updates all the time.

Now it comes down to what you will use it for more, gaming(360) or movies(PS3)?

I don't watch movies at home because I can watch movies at work, and it seems a waste of time to watch them at home. So I'd use it for 100% gaming. Now at work I don't get a 19" screen with an HDDVD, so I might have to watch a movie now and then. I think I'm going to bite the bullet on the 360. I hadn't realized how big XBLA had gotten... UNO!! And a lot of XBLA games you can play on live against others. I think I'd get the 360 just for XBLA and I might have to bite the bullet on Halo 3... too bad there's no level of difficulty called "I'm so bad I'd shoot myself if the gun wasn't strapped to my hands," or the short version "I suck ***"
Now are LCDs by definition HD? I.e. I see HDTV LCDs, does that just mean they have an input for the TV signal and the LCD part is no different than the other ones?

A 19" LCD monitor is likey either 1280x1024 or (unlikely) a bit higher. IIRC 1080p = 1920x1080, 720p = 1280x720. You can get a VGA adapter for the 360. I think you can set that rez if you have the VGA monitor, not sure though.
