Consoles are returnable within one month without a restocking fee (at Best Buy, at least).

So you can buy a console, open it, play it for a month, then return it? Really?

Yes. The "no returns" policy applies only to software because it is so easy to illegally copy software. Hardware can be returned easily. I bought an N64 way back when, and I wasn't too impressed with it so I took it back. The employee asked me the reason for the return, and I replied that I didn't like the product. He said okay and gave me a full refund.

Generally PM policies require the item to be in-stock at the actual physical store you're trying to PM to; however, whether or not they check is another issue.
I could have waited, I guess, but I got a free additional controller with mine, which is more useful to me than Forza and MUA. Plus I've been playing for a month or so :) and tech always drops in price if you wait.

Xbox #3 is dead. Maybe the fourth time is a charm. Strangely, no RROD, just drives that keep scratching my games, which is worse.

And while I have all three systems, I find myself with nothing to play at the moment.

Ocelot 10-18-07 09:12 AM

Newbie queston, if you use the X360 to watch dvds or the add-on to watch HD-DVD, does the X360 product the same amount of heat as you were playing games? I'm just curious about whether or not you can get a RRoD from watching movies... In theory, it shouldn't, because you're not using the power from the graphic chip (at least not in full power).

Canis Firebrand 10-18-07 09:13 AM

I would think the system would still be prone to receiving the RRoD.

I posted this over at CAG, but I found it amusing of what my daughter did:

I just realized my daughter accidently downloaded some Oblivion expansion for 150 points (Vile Lair)....sometimes my wife lets her play with the controller because it lights up and fascinates her (she is just turning 1). I wonder how she got to the download page, it must have been on a main page or something. The REAL bummer is, I don't even own Oblivion anymore. It would've been cooler is she downloaded some random XBLA game...oh well, not a big deal, only points, not the end of the world, I just found it amusing. (Glad I still have 6600+ points in my account).

I guess I should DISABLE Auto Sign In. Although, she might sign in with a few button presses. Oh well, preventative measures :)

Decker 10-18-07 10:14 AM

I still don't know if I or my little boy downloaded the Spartan picture pack. I know neither of us wanted it, though.

DJ_Longfellow 10-18-07 10:24 AM

Funny thing is, she likes to push the BIG XBOX button on the controller, which turns the console on. The TV was not even on the 360 input...she must have gotten lucky. Stupid Oblivion, I may hav eto get it again to play the stuff I own now.

Or instead of jumping through hoops trying to figure out how to prevent that from happening again on the software side, why not just remove your battery from the controller when you are done playing?

Well, I think my wife lets my daughter play with the controller...it lights up. But yes, I could just remove the battery. I think my daughter is aware that the button makes things happen. I'm not going to cry over 150 points, I will live....my daughter was happy pressing buttons. Her happiness is the best.

I guess disabling Auto-Login might help.

Decker 10-18-07 10:45 AM

My little guy is always turning on the console by pressing the big guide button as well. Be happy she didn't DL Shivering Isle expansion. That's like 4000 points!

I believe that's only if you're buying it for the first time. If I buy something today, if the price drops within 30 days I just bring my receipt to where I bought it, and get the price adjustment. Now if the sale is at another retailer, then you may run into a problem.

Ocelot 10-18-07 11:01 AM

i don't have this problem... b/c i turn off the router and modem...

How many 360 games are 1080p? Trying to decide on a new TV for my brother in law...either a Samsung 4661 (1080p) for $1834 shipped, or a Samsung 4662 (720p) for $1344 shipped. So $500 more for 1080p...not sure it's worth it, unless 360 games will look that much better?

Only two retail games are, I think. A few newer XBLA games are 1080p I believe. Everything looks good upscaled, even with the bit of softness it adds. I'd get the 4661, it's a great set and you'll have full resolution HD-DVD/Blu-Ray if you have or are getting players.

I would assume the 360 you have has HDMI also, as MOST TV's do NOT do 1080p over component.

Ocelot 10-18-07 11:49 AM

actually, i don't think components do 1080p at all...

No HDMI port, but the Samsung 4661 DOES do 1080p component.

discostu1337 10-18-07 12:21 PM

There are way more than 2 1080p games, more like 100...just look on the back of all the boxes and it tells ya. Of the few games I have sitting here, the following are 1080p:
Beautiful Katamari, Skate, Bioshock, Halo 3, Half Life 2.

sorry I didn't see this earlier but why would this invalidate the list for most people? The spring update included H.264 support so why not xvid? If MS wants this thing to be the center of your home entertainment it damn well better be compatible with as many video formats as possible especially because of how freakin easy it would be for them to include it. Now if they would just open up the H.264 support to other containers like x.264 (matroska) we'd be set and it truly would be a home media center option.

Nope, what's on the back of the box is just a placebo. Halo 3, for instance, says 1080p on the box but it's actually rendered at 640p. I think every game they put out now says 720p/1080i/1080p on the box, but the games are usually rendered at 720p and then upscaled to whatever resolution you've selected in your dashboard.

I didn't know about the H.264 support, but I think most people agreed that since XviD is pretty much the standard for illegal piracy, Microsoft really wouldn't let it get in the way of their video marketplace. I don't care either way, I bought the 360 to play games, not watch low resolution downloads.
