Microsoft Surprisingly Admits That ALL Xbox 360s Are Defective

Got my box in yesterday and was pleased to see that the repair facility was only about 15 miles from my house. Hopefully that means I'll get my console back sooner rather than later. I want to play Bully.

Did you get the "I know what this is look" when you went to the UPS store?

Yup. I bet UPS is thrilled they are getting so much business from this fiasco.

I wish there was a way to see the "hours" like my TV.
I mean my first box lasted almost a year, my second was about 16 months, but it probably sat for a month unplayed at least once.

I am not being overly paranoid but, how long does it take for your 360 to be shown as received?
I sent mine last week, and the repair center is still waiting.
Meanwhile, the are sending me email reminders saying they haven't received it. I neglected to copy down the info to determine where it is going, or the tracking number.

My status now says "Device shipped to customer"
Yesterday it was still waiting for arrival.
EDIT: I see it is being returned via UPS, not Fedex (according to the tracking number from the site).

Well as unhappy as I was to have my 360 break, I have to admit Microsoft is taking care of things very well. Got my notice that is already being returned and should be here Monday. Only 12 days from the time I shipped.

Mine was delivered by UPS on Friday of last week (not yesterday), and was finally changed to "Received Device" on Thursday night. I got an email today that says that my box is on its way back today, and got a UPS tracking number. I'm guessing I'll probably have it on Wednesday of next week.
I'm also pretty sure I'm getting a new box. I think the serial number is different (can't find the note where I wrote my old one down). This is good and bad. Good in that I'll probably get a Falcon with HDMI, but bad because my console rights could be a complete fucking mess (my wife and I play XBLA games on the same box and whatnot).

the 175w power brick it'd run the chance of too much power, and second,
after the horror show that was dealing with my 360 being repaired, each of
the tier 3 CS agents and Tier 2 supervisors told me that the reurbs are pretty
much units that have only been repaired as to the specifics that were wrong
with them on arrival (ie; the person who ends up with mine is only going to
have a spankin' new GPU). And lastly, the refurbs aren't always newer models,
the one I received was a June 2006.
On the XBLA issue, call MS and tell them you want a license transfer for the
download content you purchased that is locked to the prior console (if they
have not done this already... see if you can play the full versions offline to
determine this). They'll ask for the new serial number and console ID number
which is somewhere in the system info on the memory blade. After that
it'll take upwards of 30 days for them to do the transfer but supposedly
that's what needs to be done (still about 2 1/2 weeks left on mine) before
you'll have to delete the stuff from your HDD and redownload them so they
stick to the new serial number.
Congrats to those that had a pleasurable experience with the repair process,
mine was a nightmare.

Well I had a working Xbox 360 for 2 1/2 years with no problems!
So I am impressed it lasted that long, compared to the thousand of other consumers.
This week got the red rings and Microsoft will fix it for free.
Glad they admitted the defects.
Hope you all get a good working one as a replacement!

MS' first call back to me happened in the middle of Christmas Eve.
About a month ago, I, on my own, deleted and re-downloaded my XBLA games and discovered that, this time, the procedure worked.
This past week, MS finally called to tell me that they fixed the problem and were going to tell me how to make the games playable offline.
-----------
So, the process works.
But, unless things have improved in the last six months, it's a slow process where MS' right hand doesn't deal with its left in a very effective manner.

that's only in some instances. There are a bunch of manufacturer-related
defects that'll brick your 360 that only bring up a single red ring instead of
the 3 that are covered by the extended warranty. Get one of those and
they'll do their best to charge you So far my refurb works ok. It's louder
and to tell you the truth, though it seems childish and petty, the whole
experience (the bricking out of nowhere and the hassle I went through with
the repair) has kind of soured me on the damn thing. I still have tons of
unopened games for it (including things like GRAW2, Bioshock and other A
quality titles) but putting stuff in it just leaves me wondering when it'll
brick again. ...or scratch a disc, or any of the other things you read happen
with them.
Anyone get this feeling after their initial bricking? I assume it'll pass, just
doesn't sit well right now.

Of course. It's impossible not to feel that way. So far my 3rd 360 has been running fine. However, I've been playing it a lot over the past couple of months and there's always that lingering feeling of equipment failure.

The RROD isn't what scares me about buying one of these machines; it's the disc gouging. Why doesn't Microsoft release completely redesigned hardware, like the DS Lite or Slim PS2? Only instead of being smaller, it could just work correctly? Surely there's someone at Microsoft who could redesign this thing.
Maybe what I'll do is buy some Xbox 360 games now, wait about 8-10 years, then play them on an emulator.

I just returned my 14-month old 360 after the optical drive died (thank god for Costco's old return policy), but not before it scratched the heck out of my COD4 disc. I had just signed up for a year of live about a month ago too, which I enjoyed greatly, but am pretty wary of jumping back into the M$ death pool.

The disk scratching issue is an abomination. I can, well, not understand the RROD, but it's at least a little more explicable, the 360 is basically a computer, and the main harm is annoyance--but we wouldn't put up with a cable box that broke our TV, or a DVD player that scratched disks, or a car that ruined tires.
Last night while playing RB I started seeing weird stuff happening with the colors of the game, they started getting really faded out and yellowish/greenish, intermittently. I tried the cablebox and I didn't notice anything. It's possible one of my cables somewhere just got loose, and I'll check those today, but is this symptomatic of anything else?

My launch era 360's DVD drive seized up a month or two ago (motor would not spin up the disc) and reported unplayable disc error. It never scratched discs though. I opened up my 360 and gave the disc a spin with my hand as it tried to start. That got the motor going again, and my 360 has been fine since. Never had any other problems with my launch era 360. Knock on wood.
