If it was manufactured before 6/2007, you can say with good certainty it has the 90 nm chips. That said, no one knows exactly when they switched to 65nm chips, assuming they even have yet.

Has anyone heard anything about Microsoft forgoing the 65nm chip completely in favor of a 45nm chip sometime in 2008?

That's already been reported, to hit shelves late 2008 at the earliest (2009 is more likely).

Huh. I totally missed that.

Man, I don't think I can hold off for another year, with all the good stuff coming out. . .

Just to clarify, the 65 nm consoles are still coming out in the near future, but there will be 45 nm consoles a long ways down the road.

Not yet, but by Christmas. Article on Joystiq.

The 65nm is a definate. I posted in the general 360 forum an article stating they have already shipped from China/Taiwan. I believe IBM was going to help out also. Their Fishkill, NY plant was making the chips, sending them to Quebec to be assembled. I believe this has been happening for a few months now. A few friends of mine work at the Fishkill plant, and have confimed this.

Did anyone hear this one?: MS is only using 65nm for cpu and not ATI's gpu. I thought it was the gpu that was causing the problems. :scratch2:

hail2dking 09-12-07 09:21 PM

I heard both (but don't remember where I read it)

A friend of mine just confirmed that the Halo Edition XBox has the 65nm chip, and the quieter drive. - For any who care.

Confirmed how?

I have heard, in the Xbox forums, that the GPU will switch over to 65nm come early 2008.

If this is true I will likely be picking one up. Just want to hear some more confirmations.

I just wish the Halo Xbox had the larger hard drive. Why put the 20 gig in it instead of the Elite size?

Ocelot 09-17-07 10:35 AM

Is that true? The Halo edition is 65nm? If yes, i might just get it instead waiting till the end of the year... And yes, why 20G? sigh...

forsho01 09-17-07 10:45 AM

yeah if it wasn't 20g, i might have bought one. i wouldn't have minded the extra cost to put one in or anything, but going cheap on a special console is not the way to go.

Tell your friend I'm going to punch him in his lying mouth.

"n good news for those planning to make a purchase, we can confirm that the Halo 3 edition consoles will include HDMI output like recent Premium models. They are not, however, going to be running the long awaited 65-nm CPU and Falcon mobo."

Spiderbite 11-16-07 03:13 PM

In the most recent OXM (issue #78), they state near the back of the magazine:

Snuck onto store shelves - right under everyone's noses - did the 65-nanometer Falcon-chipped Xbox 360. After months of denials about the chips' very existence, it turns out the cooler-running, more power-efficient 360 CPUs were hiding in the recently arrived Halo 3 Special Edition systems. We were probably all too distracted by their hideous pea-green casing to notice. Fortunately they should be a lot more widespread by the time you read this, likely being dropped into the easier-on-the-eyes Premium units as well.
Cool. I guess that means I got the 65nm and didn't even know it.

Pretty sure that it was already posted that only some of the Halo 3 editions had the new design, others did not, including ones that have already failed.

On the contrary, the subject was brought up on xbox.com and there are indeed plans for the 65nm chip. But anyway, they just came out with 45nm technology so I have no idea if they plan on releasing an xBox 360 with 45nm.

Also, the chips do not necessarily run cooler. Nm refers to the size of the chip, not the heat it produces.

You quoted a post of mine from way back in July. Back then, Microsoft never said anything about the 65nm or 45nm chips, and they were just rumors at the time... A lot has changed since July...

If you had read anything about this, then you would know that yes it does refer to the size of the chip, but that also because of the smaller chip size, it takes less power to run which produces less heat.
