This could've been a great game, but what killed it for me was all the back-and-forth running around the subways and the same areas (that all look alike) over and over. And the thing is, the game is already way short, and if you take out all that repetitive back-tracking, the game is even shorter. So basically, it needs way more levels too. This game coulda' been a contendah, but as it is, it's pretty half-assed. Riddick was immeasurably better. Maybe a sequel could improve these things...

Just finished this game. A tad short, but I enjoyed it very much. As with Riddick, I thought the atmosphere was terrific. Lots of great conversations that you can listen in on, and Mike Patton did a great job voicing The Darkness. I loved the creeper and demon arm powers. Perfect rental game.

I'm glad that they're releasing Riddick with new content and improved graphics for the 360/PS3.

Hopefully they hold it for next year. This fall is way too crowded as is. They will end up having the same problem as they did the first time around. A very popular niche game that the masses miss because they are buying other games.

I am just playing this for the first time now, and I am at the start of the last part.

Spoiler:
Prior to this, I met up with the Darkness at the end of level four, and went through the four extraction chairs, etc. I didn't fight, as Jenny told me now to, so I listened to him for a while, then I pressed the I Accept button. When I looked up some guides, they said not to accept, and to fight his darklings (I had already given up my guns).

So my question is does this make a difference in the game? What is the difference? My latest checkpoint is now the start of chapter five, and to go back to an earlier checkpoint will overwrite the last one.

Just curious.

Just finished this, and based on my post above, does anyone know if there are multiple endings?

Edit to clarify that I am not asking with regards to the

I just started playing this game after playing Assassin's Creed to death. I got this and Bioshock on the Amazon deal. I decided to start this game first because I knew if I started Bioshock I wouldn't be able to put it down. Well, it was very difficult for me to put the controller down in this game. It's so much better than I was expecting. The Amazon deal is all the more sweeter now.

I just finished it... great game. I love this studio. Not quite as good as Riddick, but well worth the 15 bucks I paid.

-Crazy-eyes guy in the corner of the subway station
-good basic story and fairly fun gameplay.
-nice voice acting
-great amount of detail and dark humor

-cut scenes during loading got annoying
-character design (he's 21? really? 41 maybe... and what's with that jacket and hair?) Total douche
-voice of Darkness - kinda lame.

I think overall it was good... people complaining that they want more just kinda proves it was good. Always leave them wanting more. I think they left it open for a possible sequel, but I'd rather see something new from this studio. This game was long enough for me - sure, it could've been longer - but it was fine as it is.

And it's not like I wanted more of the game, but more variety - one "thumbsdown" you didn't mention was the repetition of the environments, and the need to have to slog through all of them over and over again.

Wow you didn't like Mike Patton (Darkness voice)? That was one of the high points of the game for most people. I loved the cut scene animations. Much better than watching a loading bar with a static image background. They were all pertinent to where you were in the story as well. It was a nice touch. I'll take that any day of the week.

I do have to agree with the age thing though.

Hopefully we hear something on Riddick remake in the near future.

I liked the characters, storyline and overall attitude of the game. I hope they make another.

I'm still waiting to pick this up for $20 or less used. It's lingering around $24 at Gamestop. Anyway, I played The Darkness DEMO, but it wasn't until I played OVERLORD that I really started to appreciate the fun of having Minions/Demons to do your bidding.

So now I'm looking at The Darkness with renewed enthusiasm.

GS routinely has a 10% off coupon on CAG. That would bring it down to about $21.50 used. There are also a bunch of copies on half.com in the $15-$16 range Like New.

I got this and Bioshock from Amazon when they had that amazing 2 for $50 deal.

The demon controls are pretty freakin' awesome. The only downside is that you can end up being near invincible if you use them all the time versus your guns.

Yeah - Faith No More... still lame. It was just cheesy. Maybe it if was 1991 and if I was into phony demonic mtv pop metal it would've been cool. I would've even preferred if it was the voice of Dr. Claw from the Inspector Gadget cartoon.

As for the repetition - I didn't mind terribly for the most part. I didn't think the environments looked too repetitive. I found it to be quite detailed. I didn't think it was terribly easy finding my way around though - even with the maps... I'm quite good at in-game sense of direction and mental mapping, and this one had me turned around more times than I can count. A compass would've been fantastic.

Well, I agree that the cut scenes were cool the first time, but when you have to go back to the subway repeatedly and he keeps talking about his crazy taxi ride with Bobby Abdul - it's annoying. Plus, you keep seeing the same scenes where he's just holding guns and breathing. Maybe if I liked the character design more, I would've been more receptive to it. I do think it's a wonderfully creative design element though and I hope to see it again in future games... I guess this was the part of the game I felt was repetitive as opposed to the environments.

Oh - and when talking to people that weren't story related, they just say "we good?" That got old really fast. I guess it's a good solution to a design problem.

I can see where your coming from. That's a big take it or leave it right there. You either have NPCs roaming about that you can't interact with or throw in a little dialog. Unfortunately, "we good" was as limited as they come without going the silent route.

One of my peeves was that this was supposed to be New York and there is hardly a soul wandering about.

They were all inside in my game because i went through the entire game breaking all the streetlights with a demon arm. Anyone else on the street got their hearts eaten.

I figure after a couple hours the rest of the populace stayed indoors. Except for one sneaky ninja like bastard who kept replacing the street lightbulbs every time i went into the subway. I will eventually find that guy....

I picked this up for $7 used and I'm playing on "hard". I just helped the Butcher guy with the bodies and now I'm having to deal with cops. So far this game is a huge headache. There's nothing like getting killed and having to repeat a bunch of actions after being sent back tot eh check point. Couldn't they at least let you keep the things you gathered? The character seems to move really slow and the gun targeting is "problematic". Maybe my settings are wrong.

Oh well, it was only $7....

[back to the front]

Where's part 2?

I just finished replaying this, got 18 more achievements [passing on normal, all the outfits, all side quest, all collectibles, etc.]. I only need to beat it on Hard and of course the MP ones. Come on I just need one of ya for them.

I want more Pike Patton as Darkness!
