Oh of course. If you love board games, you'll probably love these games. Problem is not that many people care about board games anymore, as we grew up on more exciting video games. So many have no interest in a slow, boring (to them) video game version of a board game.

MP just very much a niche game, and as such it's very much love it or hate it.

Mario Party a "niche" game? The series is on its eighth sequel across three console generations! Also do you really believe, if the majority hated the 'board game' aspect of the game, the series would be up to number 8?

Btw here are the top 10 selling games in the U.S. for the month of May:

1. Pokemon Diamond - DS (Nintendo) - 331,000 units
2. Mario Party 8 - Wii (Nintendo) - 314,000 units
3. Spider-Man 3 - PS2 (Activision) - 249,000 units
4. Pokemon Pearl - DS (Nintendo) - 238,000 units
5. Wii Play - Wii (Nintendo) - 227,000 units
6. Forza Motorsport 2 - Xbox 360 (Microsoft) - 217,000 units
7. Guitar Hero II - Xbox 360 (Activision) - 184,000 units
8. Spider-Man 3 - Xbox 360 (Activision) - 140,000 units
9. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars - Xbox 360 (Electronic Arts) - 138,000 units
10. Guitar Hero II - PS2 (Activision) - 131,000 units
Those are amazing sales for MP8, especially when you consider that it was released on May 29th!

Josh H 06-22-07 12:47 PM

Yeah, niche was a poor choice of words since it implies small market when the games sell great.

I more meant that it just doesn't have as broad of appeal as some other successful franchises.

It sales a ton, but mainly to kids/families and hardcore Nintendo fans. It doesn't have the cross over appeal of something like a main Mario game that gets those people plus a lot of hardcore gamers etc.

And that's why the series isn't all that well reviewed compared to such games (on top of the series getting stale), as most reviewers are older, hardcore gamers and thus out of the target market for MP.

Groucho 06-22-07 12:51 PM

Holy shit. Has a MP game ever broken the top 10? That's incredible.

Guess this guarantees a Mario Party 9: Manhunt Edition.

In other sales news, good news for the PS3. They outsold the Gamecube 8:1 in May. Widening the gap!

 At least they will have 145 games by March. That only means 16 releases a month or 4 games every week for the next 9 months. I don't see that happening.

But that is neither here nor there. Back to Wii news... people are still buying them like crazy.

VC Update for 6/25:

F-Zero® X (Nintendo® 64, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Choose from 30 different hover-car racers, including updated versions of the Blue Falcon and other vehicles from the original F-Zero, and get ready to play one of the fastest racers ever. You'll speed to the finish line on tracks that twist and turn through the air, doing your best to avoid the other 29 cars on the track. If you're in a competitive mood, try to win a Grand Prix Cup, get the fastest lap time in a Time Trial or destroy the competition in a Death Race. You can also challenge three friends in the Versus mode. With five separate play modes, hidden vehicles and courses, and an excellent soundtrack, F-Zero X still represents one of the best racing titles to date.

Street Fighter® II' Turbo: Hyper Fighting (Super NES®, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen –Violence, 800 Wii Points): Street Fighter II defined gaming in the 1990s by revolutionizing the fighting-game genre. Regarded as one of the greatest games of all time, Street Fighter II' Turbo: Hyper Fighting was the third and final release in the original series. Featuring the eight original World Warriors (including Ryu, Chun Li and Guile) along with playable boss characters (Balrog, Sagat and M. Bison), this classic title offered enhanced playing speed and improved character balancing.

China Warrior (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older –Violence, 600 Wii Points): China Warrior is a side-scrolling action game that was released around the same time as the TurboGrafx16 in Japan. It's up to the kung fu master Wang to defeat the Dark Emperor, who stands atop the kung fu world in China. Punch, kick and jump-kick enemies along the path that lies between you and the three bosses of each stage. Skillfully fight your way through all four stages, and be sure not to miss recovery items while dodging enemy attacks. China Warrior boasts character size and detail that rivaled all other games at the time of its release. Exciting one-on-one fights against the game's realistic bosses will make you feel like you're in the middle of a kung fu movie.

Oh Capcom..

KurrptSenate 06-25-07 08:21 AM

How is that F-Zero for the 64?

I haven't played that one, or the GC version

Michael Corvin 06-25-07 08:31 AM

I believe F-Zero X is considered the worst of the franchise, but even at that, due to the top quality the franchise delivers, isn't all that bad. Make sense?

I loved it at the time. It did have a cool level generator. Everytime you race the 'special track' it would be different.

If you haven't played the Gamecube game I'd pick that up cheap. F-Zero: GX can probably be found as cheap as this $10 they want for X. GX is a far superior game and can be brutally difficult at times, but it is very fun.

darkside 06-25-07 08:32 AM

F-Zero X is by far my favorite version. It isn't the prettiest version, but it is 60fps and Nintendo balanced the difficulty very well unlike the GameCube version that is brutal.

I will buy this game and I never buy VC games.

KurrptSenate 06-25-07 08:40 AM

I might have to give both versions a look

I loved the SNES and GBA games

SmackDaddy 06-25-07 09:05 AM

Surprised that no one has brought this up..but is anyone picking up Pokemon Battle Revolution this week? It's the first online capable game in the US for the Wii.

I'm tempted to pick it up just to see what online games on the Wii will be like.

KurrptSenate 06-25-07 09:06 AM

yea, I'm sure I'll get it when it comes out this week

I'm interested in transferring pokemon from Pkmn Diamond, then using the DS to play the game on my Wii

PerryD 06-25-07 09:35 AM

I'd like to get the new Pokemon game (I think it's $39.99 at Circuit City and Fry's), but I didn't care for Pokemon Colosseum, and passed on the sequel. Even with all the mini-game hate in this forum, I was hoping that Nintendo would readd the mini-games back to the console series, but it doesn't look like they bothered.

KurrptSenate 06-25-07 09:38 AM

40 at CC?

I'll definitely have to check there.

pinata242 06-25-07 09:59 AM

Going back to the VC announcement - Really disappointed that Paper Mario didn't make the June timeframe that the last Nintendo Power seemed to imply. Oh well. Maybe that's our Independence Day present next week.

DodgingCars 06-25-07 01:03 PM

Is Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting the best of the SNES release for SF2? I like Turbo better than the first release, but never played Hyper Fighting.

C-Mart 06-25-07 01:34 PM

So are they putting out a keyboard (wireless hopefully) for the Wii anytime soon? I must say that I don't like pointing the wii-mote at the screen to type... and I do use it a fair amount to check things online.

lordwow 06-25-07 01:38 PM

I've finally got back into playing my Wii a bit. SMW helped, and not playing Wii Sports for a few months made it a lot better to come back to.

Anyways, I want to get the GC F-Zero, but I can't find it anywhere. Even the EBay auctions are pretty ridiculous for it.

KurrptSenate 06-25-07 01:39 PM

hmm

i remember when I could have picked that up for about $4 at CC when they clearanced it out :/

Isn't Hyper Fighting the same game as Turbo? There were three Street Fighter II games on the SNES:

Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II Turbo
Super Street Fighter II

My favorite is Turbo because of the extra speed settings. Super Street Fighter II added four new characters, but the gameplay felt slower because it didn't have the extra speed settings that Turbo had.

You can get a sealed copy on half.com for under $15 or a used copy from $5-$10. It's an older title, but still worth $15, IMO.
