PS3: The Show. Any Thoughts?

I couldn't find a thread on this yet, but after the frustration that MLB 2k7 caused, I'm hoping it's good.

I actually traded away MLB 2k7 just because if one more damn home run was brought back in I think I would break both my 360 and my TV. It was a great game underneath, but they still didn't fix what makes a baseball game fun.

IGN and Gamespot both basically said it was pretty good, but not great, which is what most said about MLB 2k7. The single player Road to the Show (or something like that) is getting the highest reviews, but I don't think I want to play my baseball only as one player. Anybody pick this up yet, and if so, any thoughts?

I've been debating it since I loved The Show 06. However, I still may save the money and buy the PS2 version. I'm just not seeing the extra $20 in value.

Check out www.operationsports.com for reviews and opinions. I plan to rent it whenever blockbuster gets it.

I played MLB 2k7, I thought it's the worst baseball based game... It seems there's no other MLB game for 360, EA's not picking up College Baseball this year?

I got it on Wednesday. Only played a few games so far, but it is excellent. Of course it is very similar to the ps2/psp versions, but the gameplay is hands down the best of any current baseball game. The frame rate is a silky smooth 60 fps, the animations are incredible, and the stadiums look pretty damn amazing.

The graphics aren't terribly good, though. The player models don't look very "next-gen", and some of the textures, notably the grass and dirt, are really flat looking. 2K7 easily bests it in the graphics department, at least where player models, signature things like stances and pitching motions, and textures are concerned. However, the crowd in the Show is very well done. It looks awesome, especially contrasted with 2K7's putrid "cardboard cutouts". I would also give The Show points for having more of an overall "clean" look than 2k7. While the players and what not look stellar in 2K7, there are far too many things in that game that look blurry or hazy.

Gameplay is what matters the most to me, and the Show excels there. As long as you don't buy it looking for reference quality graphics, I can't see anyone being disappointed with it.

All I want is a baseball game with fantastic gameplay, a great franchise mode (w/ fantasy drafts, I'm somewhat addicted to those), and updated rosters.

I honestly don't care if it looks like Super Batter Up on SNES if it offers realistic (and easily controlled) gameplay with accurate rosters. I don't know why it's so hard on next-gen stuff, I don't really give a crap if I can see the red streak in Manny's dreads if Manny can also jump 10 feet off a dead sprint (HA!) above the wall to take back a HR

Exactly what I want. For me, there hasn't been a baseball game that's been able to beat MVP '05's gameplay and the Show '07 comes really damn close. Yes, MLB 2K7 may have the best graphics but that doesn't matter to me - it's all about the gameplay and will I enjoy playing it. I couldn't stand 2K7's camera angles when balls were hit to the outfield and controlling the infielders was a pain in the ass. I hated using the right analog to swing and when I switched it to classic swing I basically gave up the option to check swing. Also, there were way too many home runs hit. Even with the sliders adjusted I was still hitting balls out of the park like crazy. After the first week of games played Chone Figgins of the Angels had 7 home runs. I don't think he has that many in his entire career.

I've played 3 exhibition games of the Show '07 so far and absolutely love it. Gameplay is smooth, graphics are good and crowd animation is some of the best I've seen in any sports game. All I'm happy about is that I love playing this game. Going to start Franchise mode this weekend and see how it is. For all of those that loved MVP '05, I highly recommend picking this one up - you won't be disappointed.

I haven't played a baseball game in years, but the thing that turned me off of the newer games was on home runs as soon as the ball went past the fence it would just dissapear and the camera would cut away. I like seeing where the ball lands in the stands or wherever like in the old school baseball games. Do the homeruns in The Show just dissapear that way?

I know what you're talking about because it happens in MLB 2K7. When a ball is hit to the outfield the camera doesn't pan out high/far enough for you to see beyond the fence, in the Show '07 it does.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, Setzer. I too absolutely loved MVP 05. In fact, I still play it all the time on the PC. I also found MLB2K7 to be largely a sad attempt at a real baseball sim. Way too arcadey for my tastes, even with sliders.

MLB The Show is as close as we are going to get to MVP-like baseball gaming.

I may hold out for the PS3 version then. I will have to find it under $60 though so I may just play 06 a bit longer.

I would get the PS3 version, Darkside. Even though the graphics aren't like an infinite improvement over the PS2 version, they are definitely a lot nicer, and much more importantly, it plays extremely smooth and fluid at a steady 60 frames/second. That really makes all the difference in the world.

The PS2 and psp versions are excellent, but there are a few things holding it back. One, there is actually a bit of a framerate problem at times, especially when a ball is hit into play, where a little stutter or "hiccup" often occurs. There are also a few bugs in franchise mode and with roster stuff that has supposedly been fixed for the PS3 version.

I personally wouldn't want to wait for a price drop, either, but hey, it's your call. I just know that by the time the price drops, the excitement of baseball season may be waning for you. It may drop 10 bucks in a couple months on a certain week or two at Best Buy or Circuit City, but it won't be $39.99 until late Fall at the absolute earliest.

Wow, if the SHOW is close to MVP 05, I may have to get it. I still fire up my old XBOX every once and a while for MVP 05, however, I bought MLB 2K7 and enjoyed that....but I think it was because I just adapted.

The Show may be my best bet....I just don't play my PS3 as much.

I started playing this tonight. I gotta say that Im very impressed. The fielding is fantastic (and it blows in MLB 2K7) and the hitting is spot on. This is by far the best baseball game I've played in a few years.
I am disappointed in the HR animations -- or lack thereof. More than 3 times the Blue Jays hit a HR off of me and the camera never followed the ball! WTF? Also, Bonderman got an injury -- but I was never told what it was. I just had the pitching menu pop up.

So there are a few bugs or things that need to be ironed out, but this is a fun game.

I love the "Road to the Show", it definitely has it's odd glitches (being called up or sent down kind of randomly) but is a very good element of the game. I know there could be better things done with the graphics, but it does run pretty crisp and clear on 720P.

IGN gave it a 7.7. I'd like to get this soon, but I'll hold out some hope that I can find it used someplace first.

Before I go to bed each night I pray to whatever God there may be that some day EA Sports brings back MVP Baseball (and not NCAA Baseball).
And I don't believe in God. And I hate EA Sports.

Blame 2K for paying a lot of money for the exclusive third party MLB/MLBPA licenses. Actually, go ahead and just blame EA. They started it with buying the NFL License, and robbed us of two great game franchises (NFL 2K and MVP).

That's why I hate them. They shot themselves in the foot.

Why not blame the NFL and MLB. They are the ones that SOLD OUT. Don't blame EA for capitalizing on the NFL wanting to sell its license.

Ok. Can I blame EA then for taking that exclusive license and still putting out a shitty ass game that plays nothing like real football? Or how about also securing the ESPN license and then not even bothering to use it in their presentation?

Can anyone verify whether or not this has fantasy drafts for franchises? I was going to pick it up today if it did, but I'm getting conflicting reports.

Yes, you can do fantasy drafts. That's actually my preferred way of starting a franchise in any sport but my Tigers are so damned good it's hard not to play with them just the way they are.

I finally got this game today and I must say: IT ROCKS

It's far ahead of 2K7 for sure

I'd rate it just slightly behind MVP 05, but for anyone who is on the fence about getting this game who enjoyed MVP 05... pick this one up, you won't be disappointed!

Very solid baseball game. The player models aren't the best, but honestly you get past that very quickly.
