I've played my share of CRPGs -- Bard's Tale (all 3),Ultima (3-8), Fallout, Baldur's Gate (all of them), Icewind Dale (all of them), Might & Magic (1-7), Wizardry 8, Arcanum, KOTOR, and Planescape: Torment, off the top of my head. I can honestly say that the Elder Scrolls games developed for the console (Morrowind & Oblivion) stack up with the best of them. I'm willing to wait and see what Bethesda does before I pass judgment.
