Picked this up with a gift card at Wal-Mart yesterday. I only spent about 15 minutes with it so far, but damn the art direction is cool.

I finished this one over the weekend and really enjoyed it. There were two spots in the game where it wasn't clear what to do next, and I had to resort to searching message board posts for hints, but except for those instances, it was generally pretty clear what you were supposed to do. The art direction, the story, and the dialogue are what really make this game shine. Because of that, I don't think I'll be trading this one in, even though I'm not sure if I'll have the urge to play through it again all that often. It's a unique game, and I want to keep it around just to lend it to friends if nothing else. I can't imagine this game will sell too well - it's just a little too "niche" - but I hope that we see more games like this from Cing in the future.

Hotel Dusk locked up my DS!

Very early in the game. Just got Melissa to draw a picture of her mom in my notebook. Dad comes out and pulls her back into the room. I open the thing up to look at it and it just sits there with a blank page. Music's playing, but the screen doesn't respond to touches. Even shutting the clamshell doesn't suspend play and the music keeps going.

Guess I shouldn't have drawn a penis in there already...

Uh oh. I never looked at the page. Hopefully I don't need it, I already returned it to the rightful owner.

Alright. I'm stuck(for the first time) and need help. I checked an online walkthrough, but that isn't helping. I've done this room about 6 times now and I'm tired of dying and starting over. It's on the last chapter so I'm going to spoilerize everything:

Spoiler:

I'm in the wine celler locked in the room with the computer. According to the walkthrough once you get the "reveal" Louie comes and lets you out.

I got the "reveal" - Osterzone is Dunning Smyth, but poor ol Hyde is still bothering me about the number in the top right of the machine. "I wonder what that switch does." I changed it to match the number on the paper, otherwise you don't get the "reveal." Problem is, Louie still isn't showing up. What am I doing wrong?

Things I have from that room:
- Osterzone book
- photo of Dunning & Jenny from Osterzone book
- hammer
- records showing Grace stayed there

I checked/learned:
- self help book teaching you about pencil lead
- filed my pencil
- used graphite on outlet to make the computer work
- used black light on paper to reveal the hidden number
- opened security box (518) to get letter from Evans with secret code

Any ideas? I'm pulling my hair out here. It's the last level of the friggin game and I haven't needed help yet. Very frustrating.

I purchased this game, and it is next in line after Justice for All. I am on the 4th case.

Can't think of anything you're missing... Let me see if I remember this correctly.
Spoiler:
You get the letter that has the encoded message from the Osterzone book on the shelf. You use the black light to get the number from the paper by the computer. You turn the computer on and change the dial to match the number on the paper. You type in the encoded message and the computer cracks the code revealing Dunning is Osterzone.

That's all I remember for sure. If you're getting the "reveal", I don't know what you're missing. Maybe you need to walk towards the door again? I'm sure you paced all over the place numerous times until you ran out of air though

Do you have a save outside the room?

Just to clarify, you entered the number in the computer and had it decode the message, right? I thought that was the last thing you needed to do in the room. I know that it's timed, so as long as you do everything quickly enough, Louie should show up.

My memory of this part is a little fuzzy. I'll go check a few FAQs real quick to see what I can find.

Yep. I saved right outside the

wine cellar before the "refresh your memory" quiz and Kyle gets clubbed.

I've gone back to that save and tried, as well as just hitting "retry" after I die in the room.

I also went back and grabbed the tools out of the toolbox(crowbar, screwdriver & pliers) that I had previously returned in case I needed them, which it seems I didn't.

It's very bizarre.

This is the only thing I can think of that might be causing problems.
Spoiler:
Make sure you enter the code exactly the way it is on the letter. Press the Enter key on the computer after you type the first line of code, then type in the second line. My guess is that if the spacing is off even a little, the game won't recognize it and the cutscene won't be triggered.

Hope you can get it to work.

Spoiler:
Kinda like what UncleGramps is suggesting there, I noticed you spelled his name "Smyth" when it is "Smith". Long shot here, but possibly you've mis-typed a character in the encryption and the computer just happens to give you a Y rather than an I?

That'd be a helluva annoying coincidence...

Yep.
Spoiler:
It definitely comes up SmYth. I figured it was part of the story, changed his name-type thing. I didn't think it was a typo because every other time it just spits out a jumble of letters when not input correctly.

I think I'm entering it right. Is there a caps lock key I'm missing? The letter has lowercase but the keys are all uppercase. That's the only thing I've noticed.

I'll double check the code though, that could be it.

Spoiler:
According to the FAQ I just checked, it's not case-sensitive. It's definitely "Smith" though, so you may have incorrectly entered that one letter. Double-check it and see.

Good catch, pinata, I didn't even notice that.

Weird. I got nothin'. You could try posting your problem at the GameFAQs board for the game. In general those boards are pretty crappy, but some of the folks there might have run into this issue before and know what causes it.

Try a different faq, maybe we're all missing something.

Got it. Checked a different FAQ and it all boils down to something about the game that has bugged me since the beginning... despite knowing one thing, you have to physically do something else BEFORE accomplishing something. Sounds vague, but case in point:

Spoiler:
I was inputting the code the old fashioned way. I wrote it down on a piece of paper and input it in the machine. You have to physically USE the letter on the machine for it to accept the code.

There are lots of little instances like that throughout the game, and nearing the end, it is my only real gripe about it. It's 2007 a game should be smart enough to know what I'm doing. Stuff like having a briefcase full of stuff that I can't carry around, but once I find I need something I have to trek back to my room to get it.

Thanks for the help.

Oh yeah. Like the first time I had to close the DS to flip over Melissa's puzzle. I sat there like Bastian in The Neverending Story, wondering if that's really what I was supposed to do because nothing else was working. Neat little feature that I hadn't seen in any DS game yet.

Rented the game and beat it in a few days. Really enjoyed it. I was surprised I liked it as much as I did. I did play a lot of text adventures as a kid and like other adventure games like Sierra Online's stuff. I never got into Myst though.

This was a good mix. Enough puzzle solving and interactiveness mixed in with a good story.

I am on the 5th or 6th chapter, the one where you get into the bar. Good stuff so far.

I beat it a few weeks back and never even got into the vending machine. Chased down those numbers and everything. I just never found the right moment to get change.

I read the cheat. Apparently there is only one time in the whole game you can get the change. Weak! I missed it too.

I did read that on subsequent playthroughs the item you get from the vending machine is different. Meaning you'd probably learn more about another character the 2nd time and skip the 1st bit. haven't confirmed that though and likely won't.

I checked a walkthrough as well and it seems like we didn't miss much anyway. Pretty lame to not just make my character have change to begin with. Or even allow me to get change from Louie in the bar. I was in the bar numerous times and tried it. You would think a bartender would have some change handy.

Also kinda silly that it had no impact on finishing the game whatsoever.
