I just posted the official press reelease on our home page. Coming out on four platforms.
|
Wing Commander Arena is coming to XBLA.
http://kotaku.com/gaming/wing-comman...ade-238855.php That's it. Straw that broke the camel's back. As soon as this is out, I'll have a 360. |
It says this summer, so that probably means it will land around December.
|
Doesn't matter to me when, maybe something else will come out before it to help offset the cost of a $410 arcade game :D Maybe even a price drop or a hardware upgrade or just merry ol' Saint Nick.
Hell maybe, just maybe, I'll get to see a fucking conclusion to WC: Prophecy on the 360. |
Ok, now that we've got basically a port of what sounds like WC Armada coming to XBLA, what are the chances of seeing something like Star Control 2 Melee? Maybe even the strategy game of the first one.
|
Could someone give me some background on how cool or not cool this Wing Commander game is? I have never played any of the WC series.
|
Wing Commander III on the 3DO kicked all kinds of ass. Dunno what this one will be like though. Space sim shooting things I'd imagine... like that PS1 series Colony Wars.

Since then there were a handful of spinoffs that weren't as good, like Armada or Pioneer. Prophecy was decent. |
WC was the series that, with every iteration, pushed me to upgrade my system. It was my young adolescent life.
But I'm not sure this will be anything special without what made Wing Commander great - the story. The dogfighting was sound and if they're talking about "maps" like a strategic system control game (like Armada), it might be ok as a generic space shooter. Throwing the WC name on it, for me, gives me hope that EA hasn't fully abandoned the franchise and something may come later if I support it. Because "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." - Admiral Tolwyn. |

I thought privateer was pretty good. I believe some guys were doing a remake of it also.
|
Looks like we're only a month or two away from Settlers of Catan on XBLA.

I too upgraded my system to keep up with the Wing Commander games. I never finished any of them, always moved on to some other hobby or game.
It is not that the games were bad, or that I didn't plan to finish them, I just rarely finish games. I actually still plan to someday play them again. I think they later came out with a collection that had them "optimized" for Win95. |
Yeah, the Kilrathi Saga. Just get some DosBOX action going and you can use your original ones.

Gamespot has some videos up for WC:A - http://www.gamespot.com/pages/video_...306&pid=938445
I think my interest just went way down. Looks more like Subspace at a 3/4 view than any Wing Commander game I've ever seen. Bit of a hands-on preview: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/sim/...ml?sid=6166308 Wing Commander Arena is not played from a first-person perspective like the old games in the series. Instead, you control your ship from the third-person point of view, dipping and dodging your craft as you pilot through outer space and battle it out with up to 15 other players online. While the game moving away from the traditional format might upset Wing Commander purists, it makes sense for this game which, at its heart, is an action-packed shooting game that puts an emphasis on quick and dirty action. ... Controls in Arena are simple enough to pick up though not without their subtleties. You move your ship with the two analog sticks; the left stick controls your thruster, and the right stick, your steering. Your ship seems basically stuck on a single plane in the game, so you won't be able to approach an enemy from above or below. That said, there are some special maneuvers you can pull off with the right stick when the going gets tough, including barrel rolls, loops, and 180 degree turns, the latter of which is perhaps the most useful. All weapons are fired with the two triggers and the two bumpers on the Xbox 360 controller and while blasters are more or less unlimited (governed only by your ship's energy level), you have a finite amount of rockets. Even so, don't expect to live long in Arena battles--our typical tactic was to face down an opponent and then unload with every weapon we had until we died. You can choose a new type of ship in between spawns if your current ship isn't working out. |
I picked up a few titles for X360 that are supposed to be BC. ...but when I got home to play them - they would not work. I dont have Live - how do I update my X360 to play the newer BC games...???
Thanks! |
Well, just in case you have access to high speed but don't want to pay for a gold membership you can still get silver and download updates. If not, then I believe you can go to xbox.com and find the updates and burn them to a dvd.
|
u can buy a disk on ebay for like 5-10 bucks
|
Thanks - I will just connect my 360 to the net tonight. I probably need a ton of the updates!

Also for all the board game junkies out there remember there is supposed to be a version of Cosmic Encounter in the works for the Arcade.
|
I won't post it because of the bad road it will lead the forum, but it is funny and will interest some, so hit up youtube and search for PS3 Song. It will probably make the blog rounds faster than Louie Anderson at a Chinese buffet.
|
Alright I finally made the 360 plunge.
What games is everyone playing on live? My name on live is CookinBooks if you're looking for someone to beat ;) |
