I see that the pricier one is "24 AWG" and the cheaper one is "28 AWG", but I have no idea what that means. Also, the pricier one is "CL2 rated" with "net jacket" and the cheaper one has ferrite cores. Again, I have no clue what any of this means in terms of image quality. Basically, is it worth the extra ten bucks to get the more expensive cable?

The smaller the AWG number, the thicker the cable. This really only important if the cable is going to be by something with a lot of electrical interference, although with digital it matters even less. Most people will tell you the thickness on HDMI really doesn't matter. Personally, I think it matters when going over a long distance, such as 25' or more.

The net jacket is just an outer sleeve on the length of the wire to protect the wire and make it easier to pull through tight spaces, like going through a wall.

Anyone else having problems with getting the media streaming feature to work? I am running Vista 64bit and I can't see my PS3 on the list of "Media Sharing" devices in Vista. On my PS3 it shows my Vista machine, but it can't connect, says that I need to make sure my settings on my computer are correct.

Well Warhawk is a miserable fucking experience. I know its a beta and to be expected.
So far I have had 5 server disconnects, 3 complete PS3 lock ups and have died many times without killing a single person. I almost forgot how much I hate shooters and online play, but thankfully Warhawk has reminded me.

Edit, Okay I'm done. It takes forever to even get in a match and then the whole game freezes 2 minutes in. I'm going back to playing Japanese RPGs where I belong.

I bought the 6ft 28 AWG cable from monoprice. It works great, no complaints at all. If you are only getting a 3 ft length, I really don't think you would need the thicker cable, so I would go with the cheaper one.

Also, I'm running video into my TV via HDMI and audio via optical into my (non HDMI) receiver and have no problems at all, so you should be ok.

When I first installed the update, it recoginzed the Windows Media Player media server, then I updated my WMP and it didn't work anymore. After messing around with some settings, I turned on my Nero Media Home and it's been working fine ever since. I'm not sure what is up with the WMP (maybe the update?) and I'm not a huge fan of the Nero app, but it works very well with the PS3.

Thanks for the help, guys. Guess I'll go place an order for the cheaper cable. I'm looking forward to this since I've never owned an upscaling DVD player.

fujishig 05-24-07 08:17 PM

Yeah, I've had HDMI for video and optical for audio since the PS3 first came out, never had any noticeable problems. Looking forward to downloading the update today, though I am bummed that it seems like there's still no auto-resizing option to automatically resize 4:3 content on a widescreen tv.

edit: the "normal" setting does auto switch between 4:3 and 16:9. Awesome!

I just set this up on both an XP Media Center pc as well as a 64bit Vista ultimate laptop. this is what I did:

1. Click on the arrow under the Library ( from Windows media Player)
2. Click More Options
3. Library
4. Configure Sharing
5. Check Share my Media
6. You should see under share my media an icon ( Unknown device) that's your PS3
7. Click on it and allow.
then click ok.
then I rebooted my PS3 and it worked.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that i am using WM11.

Sweet lord the Warhawk Beta truly is awful. I had no connection issues but the game is less than average. I realize the game has been scaled back from what it originally was but I think they truly given up on the game and are foolish if they think people will pay for this game at all. I am going to try a few more games in the morning since the games were kind of small but I can't imagine this game redeeming itself.

Yeah, I can already share just fine to my Xbox 360. For whatever reason my PC doesn't see the PS3 show up.

I thought the game looked pretty good, but the planes seem to move like molasses and the matches I was in everyone jumped into Warhawks and battled in one small corner of the map making all the anti aircraft guns and other vehicles useless.

Did you have freeze ups? The thing that frustrated me was my PS3 locking up in the middle of a game. Happened 4 different times to me and no matter how long I waited the game would never unfreeze and the PS button wouldn't work to exit. I hope it wasn't my console. I played other games on it for 2 hours after giving up on Warhawk and had no problems.

BTW, I tried the media sharing thing as well last night with WMP11 and it found my PS3 and connected with no issues. I already have a networked Xbox Media Center, but its nice to have an option 2.

PixyJunket 05-25-07 07:58 AM

Hmm.. looks like the "Double" option is for DVDs only, not for PS1/PS2 games. That's very odd, as that option would suit the games far better than movies in my opinion. Oh well, the good news is that if I pick up a new TV soon, my girlfriend might drop half the cost of the PS3 with me for the Blu-Ray player.

DJ_Longfellow 05-25-07 08:00 AM

With the 1.80 update...I keep getting disconnected with my WIRED connection. So, I went to configure my Network settings and it says UPnP was disabled and NAT Type 3 (I have UPnP enabled on my router). So, I switch to WIRELESS and UPnP is now enabled and NAT 2 shows up. That is just odd. I don't use my PS3 too much lately, but I will IF I get a new TV in the future.

Warhawk seemed ok...I got disconnected, but it was the same disconnect problem I had when I was WIRED...same error code.

As for sharing...I THINK my WMP 11 found the PS3...it was UNKNOWN DEVICE, so not sure if it was the PS3 or some random device nearby ;)

Check the MAC address. That was how I could be sure it was my PS3.

Since I got 1.8, I've been getting disconnected quit abit and I'm using wireless.

I didn't have the system lock up on me thank goodness. That would just of been adding insult to injury with this game.

The beta took forever to download. While it was downloading, I hopped onto that other beta (;)) and ended up playing until 2 in the morning. Guess I'll give Warhawk a shot over the weekend, even though it sounds like there's not much to get excited about.

Stick with the other Beta. There are some great PS3 games on the horizon but Warhawk is not on that list as far as I'm concerned.

I'd still like to play around with it a bit. It's free, and I'm not expecting much, so I figure it deserves a chance. The odd thing is that I had heard some positive buzz from 1Up about their experience with the beta. Maybe it works better with a full group of players?

That is honestly the only way I can see having fun in this game. Putting together a group of people you know and working together. Going in as a single player and getting tossed into a random battle is a pretty terrible experience. I had no idea what was going on or what to do. I'm going to try it again today, but I may grab a Warhawk and just go fly it away from battle to see if I can figure out the controls. They are a bit counter intuitive.

I downloaded the 1.8 firmware update and tried God of War II. I have to set GoW II's progressive option to OFF to get the upscaling to 1080i/p. The only problem is that the picture is displayed 4:3 (with wide black bars on the sides) even if I set GoW II's widescreen option to ON. And if I set widescreen=ON and progressive=ON, the resolution drops down to 480p and the black bars on the sides disappear.

With smoothing ON, GoW II looks really nice in 1080i (my tv's max res).

Also, DVD movies upscaled to 1080i looks great too.

I can upscale PS2 games and DVD movies to 1080i, why is it that my PS3 games are only in 480p? I have a 3-year old Sony rear projection HDTV (KP-51WS510) thats supports 480p/720p/1080i and my PS3 games are CoD3, Resistance FoM, NBA Street Homecourt, NBA 2K7, and VF5. The PS3 is connected to the TV using HDMI-to-DVI cable (TV got DVI only).

redbill 05-25-07 04:20 PM

Just picked up the PS3 Motorstorm bundle at Costco - mostly for BluRay & 1080p upscaling. I was gonna get the A2 until the firmware update came out this week - just in time.

I'm pretty impressed so far. Unfortunately Costco didn't have any BluRay discs and traffic sucked, so I haven't tried that out yet. The upscalling is much better than my old Progressive scan no-upscale Player.

I downloaded some trailers, and wasn't all that impressed, some of them seemed kinda "blocky" - excuse my technical terms. Are generally the trailers of lesser quality than BluRay?

Just a guess, but are there separate SD and HD trailers? I know gametrailers.com does this. You would want to watch the HD trailers for Blu-ray quality.

darkside 05-25-07 05:15 PM

The problems with the freeze ups are on the Warhawk beta forum so this is a common issue that will hopefully get fixed soon.

DVD Josh 05-25-07 07:28 PM

Alright, I'm having problems with my PS3 "seeing" any tracks. I've got the media share working, but when I point it somewhere, it just says "no tracks". Is there a way to configure this a little deeper?
