Thank god!

How are they handling the software emulation in the US? Will all PS3s get that firmware or just ones missing the emotion chip?

XavierMike 03-19-07 03:58 PM

The rummor is that the US will be going software as well. This could enable PS2 and PS1 game upscalling however.

darkside 03-19-07 04:05 PM

I'm just wondering how this will work on systems with the emotion chip. Could be cool if you had the option to use the software upscale or the chip.

Ocelot 03-19-07 04:06 PM

Yes yes yes!!! This means you can play FPS games with the keyboard? Finally you can surf the net using keyboard! and not only that, bkground dLing, how cool is that!

Then i guess you can setup batch downloads? Man, no too far away for the update!

Are you sure this is what it means? I originally read it as that now there's a full size virtual keyboard you can use on screen, not support for an external one. But it is ambiguous. Anybody know for sure which it is (or if it is both)?

That's how I interpretted it as well. I think as it sits right now you can hook up a physical keyboard and use it for text entry. I Just want the on screen QWERTY.

This was about an onscreen QWERTY. You can hook up a keyboard and mouse now. However, games have to be written to support which none do. So all you will be using the keyboard for is the internet.

This may sound really dumb, but is anyone else's PS logo loose? There's a little PS logo right under the BluRay opening, and I noticed yesterday it looked off center... it's actually pretty loose and easily rotated. Minor complaint, I know, just wondering if that's standard. Maybe so that you can reorient it when it's upright?

cartman 03-19-07 05:50 PM

There's nothing in 1.6 that interests me... unless they silently fix the problem I have with not seeing video when playing PS2 games :(.

Yup, mine's also "rotateable." Would probably come in handy if you want to set yours up vertically and rotate the logo...

The PStwo also has this kind of logo. That way you can rotate it for vertical or horizontal use.

Well I'll be damned. You learn something new every day. And all this time I never even noticed that my logo was tilted the wrong way.

I know this will make me sound retarded, but the PS3 has a built in web browser? Huh. Didn't know that. How do you access it from the menu?

BTW, the menu system is not very user-friendly.

Yes, the browser is in the Internet menu... Navagation is pretty easy, scroll the icon menu left or right and then up or down for the particular function. X for confirmation, O for cancellation... Pretty easy for me, the only annoying thing is the TEXT entering mechanism, i hate that *hit w/o keyword! the Wii is different, but still, pointing to letters and numbers is just freaking slow and annoying...

Other than that, i found the PS2 menu is neat and simple...

Oh, guys/gals, i do have one question, how do you copy the game saves from one user to another? Can you delete an user?

PerryD 03-20-07 08:58 AM

Anybody thinking about getting Virtua Tennis 3? I think Fry's will have it $5 off ($45) which nowadays is a bargain for a PS3 game.

DamingR 03-20-07 09:02 AM

I would guess that you highlight the user and press triangle to delete, that's how you delete movies, etc.

I have to wonder, when this 1.6 firmware hits Stateside, will it be disabling the embedded PS2 hardware that the EU release doesn't have to make a single version across territories? It seems that no matter what, eventually our PS3 will be without this hardware and we'll start to see a decrease in BC.

PixyJunket 03-20-07 12:52 PM

Only 1/3 of PS1/PS2 work without problems (at the moment):

It won't disable models already on the market, but once that hardware-less version of the PS3 shows up here in the states, this is the craptastic BC we get to look forward to.

Launch units will start to go for a premium on Ebay again.

Has that been confirmed or are you just using "common sense"? You should know better than that when dealing with Sony ;)

Here's a nice graph:

This is why I'm keeping my PS2. Between this and my Ar Tonelico disaster, I'm only using the PS3 for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies.

darkside 03-20-07 08:37 PM

I still have a PSone, silver PStwo and the PS3. However, I like having the option to play most of my games on the PS3 (I have played a ton of Symphony of the Night which isn't on the compatibility list) so I'm glad I grabbed one that still has the emotion engine chip.
