For the poor souls who couldn't get a PS3/Wii at launch - restock rumors/facts HERE
Hi guys and gals,
While I have never posted here before (total noob, yes I know), I have read these boards religiously in the past week or so, focusing in on reading about everyones efforts, success stories, failures, and funny stories pertaining to the launch of both the PS3 and Wii.
Now that both launches have come and gone, one of the biggest questions that I've seen on other messageboards is "Well, I got screwed out of (insert console here), does anyone know when another shipment is due into (insert store(s) here)? Well, I suggest that we continuously update this thread, condensing any rumors, heresay, and stone cold facts about when these places will be getting more stock in. I was one of the many that didn't luck out with a Wii today, and I figure, who better to start things off!
- Asked around at Target this afternoon about when their next shipment of Wii's will be arriving. The guy in electronics didn't have an exact date, but he informed me that the shipments will come in soon since Nintendo is shipping out 4 million by the end of the year
- This link seems promising: http://www.wiiloaded.com/wiinews-3082
For those who are at work and behind firewalls (like myself), here's the text:
The picture in the link details that Toys R Us will be the place that will be getting the bulk of all Wii shipments, with Best Buy and Circuit City following. The funny thing is, Target is pretty low on this chart, yet the Target in my area had the most at launch today, so I may smell BS on this.
Again, as I find more information/facts/rumors on the web, I'll be sure to post them here. And hopefully, you all will do the same too, and we can get first dibbs on these bad boys ASAP!
Lookin' forward to chatting more with the gang here!
Matt

While we hate to report news that cannot be confirmed, it would be a crime to not alert our members to two rumors that have recently reached WiiLoaded.
First of all, Game Crazy employees may be telling customers that, even though initial launch shipments have already been allocated and will likely sell out quickly, major retailers will be restocked as early as the next day.
Would this be a smart play for Nintendo? Sure. The news of a sell out will increase desirability, and unlike Sony, Nintendo could fill the additional demand from the following day, all the way through the holidays.
Would this reduce the need to spend hours in line, just to get a Wii 24 hours before they are readily available? Sure. But those hours in line will be worth a day of bragging rights for some of us!
Rumor number 2? Another viewer has submitted an image of Wii allocations by major retailers, seen below:

Not sure, I keep hearing the same thing. Possibly the end of the week for the Wii. Then again, we had those same rumblings last year about the 360.
On an unrelated note, it will be interesting to see if Nintendo can put 6 million consoles out there in 3 months vs. MS's taking a year to do it.

A friend of mine got up this morning and tried to get a Wii just for giggles. He tried Target and struck out. The same went for Wal-Mart (he's in a town without CC/BB and didn't feel like driving a half hour to the town with them). He then tried TRU on a lark. He got there before opening and was apparently about 5th in line for the 13 extra they had. So far, he really likes it.
Perhaps TRU is a bigger player in all of this than I would have thought. That may back up the numbers mentioned. My friend did mention that he heard from somebody with a ticket for the Wii at the Target that they got 50 in. That does contradict the report summarized above. I guess another lesson may be to check in at TRU if restocking happens and you still miss it.

Keep us updating on when Wii's restock! I missed out (was visiting someone). tried to stop at random best buy's and TRU's on the 5 hour drive home but struck out all along PA and MD.
Tomorrow would be awesome! What time to most stores get their shipments of (stuff) in?

Yeah I missed out, tried a couple times. Still not as bad as the ps2 launch, for me anyway.
I tried a few weeks back to line up for the toysrus preorders but when I called friday afternoon they said they handed out preorders friday instead of waiting until sunday. Then I was going to wait in line Saturday but I saw radioshack had wii's so I ordered one, but by ordering one I no longer had enough money to go and wait in line, which at the time seemed fine. Eventually it was cancelled, but my money was not refunded(still isnt). I even had an order in with another online store, but my cc was denied. I was like 20 dollars shy.
I keep calling stores and everyone seems too pissed off to give me an answer. The rumor at cag is that a lot of stores are saving some in the back for black friday. I'll be camping thursday night for those if that's true.

Is it a marketing plan to only release a number of consoles? If they know demand is going to be high, why not saturate the stores with consoles. That way everyone wins.

The PS3 launch went pretty much as expected. But most people thought there'd be enough Wiis to go around so that you could buy one right away if you just sauntered into a store.
So was the demand for the Wii underestimated, or was the available supply overestimated? Or a little of both?

Here's my take on the PS3 situation. Not scientific at all, just from talking to a friend who is the media supe at the local BB and lots of reading on the internet. First of all, Gamestop/EBGames and Wal-mart both seem to be fairly confident of a shipment this week, probably Wednesday, to cover preorders and rainchecks. As for other stores, it will be pretty random. Most of the units Sony will be sending will be shipped directly to stores, not going through the store's warehouses, so they usually won't know when they're coming or how many until they show up. My friend at BB said 4 units showed up on launch day at 10am, after all the campers had left. He had no idea they were coming and they sat on the shelf for about 15 minutes before anyone saw them.
I really don't think there is going to be a big "2nd shipment" like everyone has been asking about. I think Sony just wants to get as many units in stores as quickly as they can, so they have chosen the drop ship method. The bad thing about this method is it's not going to do any good to call the stores to see when they will be getting more in because they won't know. You might get lucky and catch them right after they got some in stock but good luck trying to get them to hold one for you until you can make it.
Basically, it's going to come down to visiting the stores as often as you can and try to get to know someone in their electronics or media departments. Let them know why you're there and see if they have any news. Also, be nice about it. They are going to be getting the same question a million times between now and Christmas and would rather talk to someone nice in person than someone yelling at them over the phone, accusing them of lying about not knowing when more were coming in.

Just for info, I went to the Target in Clark, NJ and the list from that Wii site was accurate down to that last Wii. 81.

I was told by a BB employee that their management said there will be another shipment of Wii's bigger than the launch day shipment on Dec 7th. Can anyone confirm?
I'd also like to add that normally I don't listen to BB employees, but this guy is trustworthy, and has been dead on about everything before.

I'm pretty much content to just be able to walk in the stores in May 2007 and just pick up the Wii and PS3 without all this hassle. I did the same for the 360 after waiting in a line unsuccessfully and it was worth the wait.
