That's good that they put colors on there with labels. So you know that green is green.

Poor color-blind people.

Another PS3 model... for $2500???

This just in from our Tokyo bureau: according to an interview conducted by Japan's Impress, Sony's Ken Kutaragi has gone on record with a "promise" for what he's calling an AV-centric PS3. In other words, audio and video capabilities first, gaming second (if at all), in a device built around the Cell-processor platform. Ken says that the device would certainly be more expensive, reflecting the prices and margins expected on high-end consumer electronic devices such as TVs, Blu-ray personal video recorders, etc. -- not the relatively cheap, but powerful gaming rigs sold at a loss under Sony's Computer Entertainment division. Impress speculates that the device could cost as much as ¥300,000 or about $2,500. The new Sony-branded living room box would, in Ken's (translated) words, "be a standard AV component sized box with a more powerful, power supply unit, anti-shake insulator, twice the main memory, and 2x HDMI to split sound and video output." More Cell-processor devices in the living room? We say bring it, Sony.
If this thing ever does come out, I bet it still launches with a composite cable.

I know most people have been waiting for a more expensive version. I can't wait!

Twice the main "memory"...

So... 120GB?

You can do that with a PS3 right now.

mrpayroll 12-21-06 06:08 PM

They tried this 3 years ago and it failed miserably in Japan. I was thinking of getting it, but thankfully it never made it to the states.

I think they meant the RAM, not the hard drive.

Do you mean the PSX, the PS2 model with all those high-end media capabilities? The PSX was the first thing I thought of when I read that article too. I guess Sony doesn't learn from their mistakes. The PSX failed and so will this new "PSX".

I can't see this happening. Sony is losing money on every unit they sell. I read somewhere in the neighborhood of $200+ per PS3.

Save Ferris 12-21-06 08:07 PM

well honestly I just want to get a blue ray player for under $500, so whichever is first--a standalone player or the ps3, doesnt matter to me.

ILikeDVD 12-21-06 09:16 PM

any B&m will let me exchange my game that came bundled with my PS3? I got mine at Costco.

Yep, couldn't remember the name. That one was under $1000 at the time I believe. I don't think ANYONE is going to want to pay $2500 for a piece of equipment no matter what it does.

I paid more than $2500 for my TV

Woot has the PS3 up for today for $499 + $5 for 1-day shipping (if the stars align it will be in your hands Sat, before Xmas). They will probably be sold out by the time I'm done typing this, but I just loved their writeup for the PS3:

Woot Sells PS3? Wii, Wii!

So, hey, check it out: there’s this awesome new gaming system that we just can’t stop playing. Too bad it’s so hard to find in stores – we guess they just didn’t make enough of them. It’s called the Nintendo Wii, and holy mother of Zelda, is it ever a blast. If the Wii is cool with polygamy, we might ask it to marry us.

The controller – so easy! No more intricate push-this-twice, pull-that-three-times trickery, just easy waves of the hand. The console – so cute! It actually makes our gaming room look better, unlike the bulky, ugly consoles we could mention. How does Nintendo keep the price so low on that thing, anyway? And the games, good Lord, the games! Not to mention those adorable avatars. We’ve already created virtual versions of the entire staff, so we can beat each other virtually-bloody instead of actually-bloody, like we usually do. The only problem is that none of the nose options are as big as Jason’s actual nose. But that’s a minor quibble.

In fact, we love the Wii so much, we want to give a Wii to everybody on our payroll. To fund this Wii-for-the-People program, we're selling this Sony PlayStation 3. The SIXAXIS wireless controller is basically the same complicated gazillion-button-style controller you know from past PS models, but at least you won’t be fighting Grandma for gaming time. Along with the usual roster of ho-hum games, the PS3 can play CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs, and the 20GB hard drive can store music, videos, and music videos. It’s certainly, er, rather full-figured, for those of you who want a lot of heft for your money. And its HDMI capabilities give you polygons and frames-per-second out the wazoo, if you prefer that stuff to having fun.

Best of all, for every PS3 you buy, we can buy Wiis for two of our employees. So when you get frustrated by those intricate combo-button moves, or bored by the underwhelming game offerings for the PS3, keep the spirit of the season in mind. Remember all those happy Woot staffers whose lives have been changed by their super-fun Nintendo Wiis, paid for by you. Heartwarming, isn’t it?

* shipped today via FedEx Next Day with Saturday delivery. Rural and snowbound areas may cause delivery delay out of Woot or FedEx control.
Warranty: One year

Features:

* Plays video games and stuff

$2500 for a PS3 that doesn't play games. This is comedy gold.

Apparently the Bluetooth PS3 remote is showing up in stores now.....finally. Really should have been at launch.

Daryl 12-22-06 09:51 AM

I picked up the remote last night at Gamestop (thanks, Fandango!). I like the layout and I'm happy with the purchase. My only minor gripe is the "pressing any button on the remote will turn on the PS3" function - I tend to be sloppy with my remotes, leaving them laying them around on the couch and whatnot - so the possibility of accidental button pressing by me (or, more importantly, my kids) is high. And while I understand since it's bluetooth it couldn't be done (I'm assuming that's why) - I will miss not being able to control my TV (volume, TV power) with this remote.

But do you still point the bluetooth remote at the PS3 when you push the buttons? That's the real question.

You shouldn't have to. Just like RF, bluetooth should be able to go through walls, floors...etc.

Do the PS3s from the most recent shipments still come with Talladega Nights? I went to Gamestop to buy the Bluray remote for my uncle, and there was a sign behind the counter saying "We do not have any PS3 or Wii." So when I got to the counter, I jokingly said "I'll take a PS3." The guy behind the counter asked another worker "We still have those 2 in the back, right?" He went to fetch it, and I told him I was kidding, and I only asked because the sign said they didn't have any.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I remember my brother wanted one, so I called him, and he asked me to pick it up for him. Now that I have it home with me, I don't see any indication on the box that Talladega Nights is included. I popped the top of the box open just to make sure the actual PS3 was in there (you never know). Without taking anything out of the box (I want to reserve that pleasure for my brother), I saw the PS3, Sixaxis controller, and the power cable. Should we expect to see Talladega Nights in there when we actually unpack it?

They can't even give them away now...

Just kidding. Please don't shoot me.

Anyway, I think only launch PS3s came with Talladega Nights, like only launch 360s came with the DVD remote control.

I was hoping "launch PS3s" meant the first month or so, not just the initial shipment, but I guess not. :(

I ordered mine on 12/12 from Sam's Club online, and it had Talladega Nights.

fumanstan 12-23-06 07:16 PM

No Talledega Nights in my roomate's PS3 that he got from Gamestop a week ago. A bit dissapointing, since I really wanted to check out Blu-Ray.

ChrisHicks 12-23-06 07:31 PM

just a heads up, the GT:HD demo is in the PS Store now.

but you can't start downloading it until I'm done. ;)
