I think both of those are examples of people bidding just to drive up the hype (as in, those sales won't go through, but it will artificially increase the perceived value for other auctions). I say this because there are 50 other completed auctions that have averaged around 2000, and they ended at roughly the same time as these two. So I'm calling shenanigans on these auctions (although, since I plan to sell my preorder, I can only hope they're real). I would think that the real test of these machines' ebay value will be Saturday, after everyone goes into stores on Friday and is told that they won't be able to buy a PS3 until March.

ChrisHicks 11-10-06 08:53 PM

does anyone think stores like EB/Gamestop will offer some type of waiting list for after the launch?

Outlaw 11-10-06 09:18 PM

I got my hands on a PS3 at Target. The controller feels all right. But thats because its the same thing I've been holding the past 10 years. I didn't play anything because I thought Genji was playable but it ended up being a Trailer. Looked pretty good, but not anything that couldn't be done on a current system. I didn't see any other demos besides a motorcross game so I left.

Supermallet 11-10-06 10:39 PM

We set up our PS3 in the store today. Less than an hour afterwards, it froze.

Looks no better than a 360 to me.

that just makes you want to run on over to ebay and pay $5000.00 right now doesn't it?

Supermallet 11-10-06 11:19 PM

Also, it was odd, but the PS3 visible in the demo unit is not attached to anything. There's a second PS3 in the guts of the unit which is what is actually running. I have no idea why they did this.

I would guess its a cooling issue. Having the system in a confined space would require some kind of fan, and to have said fan in with the "displayed" PS3 would be visually unappealing and could also lead to negative impressions and cause for over heating concerns.

Yeah, saw the PS3 at a Best Buy today. Graphics looked real nice, but I think I'm more tempted to join the Wii60 crowd this generation. I'd be more interested if they had done a little more to improve the controller for the PS3. I would have at least liked to have seen what the boomerang would've been like. But I will say this, it's a pretty slick looking system with that coat of glossy black.

DId it just have Motorstorm and NBA at Best Buy, or were there other demos?

Anubis2005X 11-11-06 09:48 AM

I didn't actually play it, just watched others for a minute or two. But all I saw was Motorstorm...

Because Japan didn't need 100,000 launch units, but Sony needed 20,000 demo kiosks.

edallasplanet 11-11-06 11:30 AM

I think its so ridiculous that people are just going to sell a system when there are people out there who love videogames and won't get to see one because of greedy 30+ year olds.

again with this lame ass paper thin argument. "but..but.. you're taking it out of the hands of a gamer, blah, blah, blah..." What do you think those that spend $2000 on it are going to do with it? Use it as a medicine ball in an equipment room? Get real, they are going to game on it, just like the person that pays retail. Some people just have money to burn and don't care about the cost.

It is a [tired]silly argument. People need to come up with something more creative than that if they want to bitch about it.

Install it in the back of their Escalade?

Binger 11-11-06 05:18 PM

I had heard about lock ups on demo units, but I figured it was just internet bullshit like always. Anyway I just played the demo at BB and it locked up within a couple of minutes. I have a unit pre-ordered and I hope that this isn't a sign of things to come.

ChrisHicks 11-11-06 06:26 PM

I was just at my local Meijers and found out how there doing their PS3 release. they are setting up chairs for the amount of units they are getting with 50Gb or 20Gb on each chair. when everyone is there they will do a type of musical chairs and those who get a seat will get whatever PS3 is on the chair. the store I was at said they are getting 4 total. and now for the best part: YOU HAVE TO BE THERE AT 12:00AM THURS. MORNING!!!

if you arrive after 12:00am you can't compete. you will then have to sit there until 12:01am on Friday or you won't get one. I don't think this is going to end well if 40 or more people show up and they all end up fighting for a seat.

pinata242 11-11-06 07:25 PM

What the hell happened to "first come, first served"? I'm so sick of all this lottery bullshit.

pinata242 11-11-06 07:48 PM

Wow, this story and videos are really interesting, sad, and scary.

this has me wondering, since there are some pretty violent areas here in the US where people can get shot for something like a 60.00 pair of shoes, what are the possibilties of a ton of people getting killed for their PS3s?

a seat.

LOL! But in all seriousness, I think a competetive game for a PS3 is a very very very bad idea! It just adds so much more pressure on an already stressful situation.

I finally got to play the offroad racing game for PS3, but I as left completely underwhelmed. The guys behind me were amazed though every time I crashed the car at the detail of the parts flying off the vehicle and yelled "look at the graphics man!", but it didn't really do anything for me.
Actually there seemed to be slowdown and a lot of motion blur (to cover it up). Normally I couldn't give a shit about graphics, but this is a $600 system, so I only expect the best. So seeing how there is still slowdown was unexpected. Having played a game on it, it didn't look all that better than a 360 game (which is a better buy for the price IMO)

edit: Does the sixasis work on this game? I tried moving the controller but nothing happened

Weren't there muggings when the 360 launched? I'd say "incidents" are almost surely guaranteed, but I'm not expecting anyone to actually kill for it. Then again, someone got killed here in Tulsa a few months ago for cutting in line at a taco stand, so anything's possible.

someone better get on the ball and start making these shirts -

I spoilered this as to not offend any sensitive readers. if you don't like bad taste jokes please don't read. thanks.

you know, I've made jokes about evil ways to get a PS3 but to an extent this could be a scary situation for some people. imagine spending over a day in a line in 30 degree weather in order to secure your PS3 only to be greeted by thugs in the parking lot threatening to do physical harm if you don't hand over your newly purchased toy.

got to play ps3 at best buy tonight, they had Sonys NBA titile, didnt look impressive. Bad game to demo the ps3

You have to turn it on in the Motorstorm demo settings menu.

I played this tonight at Target after someone let me know they had set up the demo kiosk earlier. I thought Motorstorm looked good I tried the desert race stage (choice on the right) It took a little bit to get used to the six axis control (but a lot of this was Targets stupid 6" plastic arm confining the controller). Unfortunately they were closing shortly after I got there so I only got to do that one race.

In some parts of the country there could be some real problems. I see these boards where people talk about camping out the night before for Black Friday stuff, these are mothers and fathers and even grandparents. So it's not that far fetched to think that these same people might camp out for a PS3 for their kids. And when people see the PS3, ALOT of people see $$$, myself included.

I'm planning this whole thing out pretty carefully, there's 3 stores in town that i will NOT be camping at, just because i don't think it's safe. I don't even think it's gonna be completely safe at the store i'm planning on going to. Think of all the pissed off people who waited who are not going to get one. They're the ones you have to watch for.

Hey, if Sony put out enough players it wouldn't be a problem. Or if Ebay never existed there wouldn't be this type of frenzy. But, that's the way things are, and i hope people are humane enough not to do something stupid.

Well I called my Gamestop and checked the situation. They said they will hold it. No question. Since I work Friday morning I will hit them up at lunch(long after open), so hopefully that decreases my odds of an incident exponentially.

While he had me on the phone he tried to sell me some games saying they were selling out. rotfl They don't stop at anything do they?

Wildo1966 11-12-06 08:14 AM

After reading today's Best Buy flyer I think there is going to be huge chaos this coming Friday. The ad states they will have 6 cheap systems and 20 deluxe systems. They also state they will give out tickets one hour before opening, what about the people who pre-ordered them? Do they get them from this group of 26 systems? If so there is going to be alot of angry people on Friday! I am not sure what Best Buy's pre-order procedure is so any info would be great!

The online preorder was a mistake. Those that ordered one got an email and a $10 coupon.

Zodo 11-12-06 11:54 AM

Is anyone else unsure about getting the $600 version now? I mean, I'm not going to use the wifi or memory card reader...and it looks like it will take ANY laptop HDD. I can get way more than 60gigs for $100 on newegg, so why would anyone want the more expensive version (assuming you don't need wifi).

Michael Corvin 11-12-06 11:56 AM

but you get chrome trim! Seriously, I haven't fully understood that either. Definitely sounds like a waste. They should throw some component or HDMI cables in that package to make it worth it.

Binger 11-12-06 01:28 PM

Personally I need the wifi and even though I will probably never use it, you can't connect you PSP to the 20GB version if I'm not mistaken.

Wow, you're right! Sony needs to get this info out there or there's going to be major backlash down the road.

This is funny and sad at the same time. Sony got some egg on their face for trying to interview someone who can't speak Japanese. It's sad that people were being paid to wait in line. Whats even worse, is that some people will read this article and will probably do the same thing with illegal immigrants here in the US.

bballing 11-12-06 03:18 PM

I read that best buy is handing out tickets 11pm on Thursday.

2 questions.

1. What time do you think people will start lining up outside bestbuy.

2. If I get a ticket at 11 pm, does that mean I can go home and come back in the morning and pick it up when they open?

Where'd you read this? This type of practice would surely encourage more people to start going out Wednesday afternoon/night instead of Thursday morning/afternoon.

I was planning on going to BB by Thursday afternoon....think this'll be too late? I've never done this type of thing before.

ChrisHicks 11-12-06 03:40 PM

my chances of getting a PS3 have fallen into the gutter with all these stores doing the raffle stuff. I think I'm just going to wait until some store online starts taking orders for these now. I just can't see waiting in line for awhile and have some guy show up and hour or 2 after me get one while I get the shaft.
