Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
Patapon 2..
I pre-ordered from Amazon.. I just got an e-mail saying it will be a download and not a UMD!! I actually want downloads over UMD, so I'm happy!! The one thing that pisses me off is that Japan has had P2 for like 6 months and Europe has had it for like 2 months.... If its a download other than language, why did we get forced to wait?? |
Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
Yes, Patapon 2 is a download, not UMD.
Well, to be honest, the game is cute and all, but anal as hell. So, maybe there's a reason why we were forced to wait in the US? |

The official PlayStation blog lays it out for potential Patapon 2 customers, displaying the contents—box, instruction manual and download voucher—and clearly warning "No disc included. Memory Stick and access to PlayStation Network required." The UMD-free release is a "one time test case" according to the company. Frankly, I hope it's a success, but that Sony drops the excess of shipping thousands of mostly empty plastic cases. |
Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
Yeah I wanted to sell the original after about 2 hours.

Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
The upside of the download only trend is hopefully lower prices and being able to share the same game with up to 5 PSPs. The downsides bother me though. I like owning my games in a physical form. I'm going to miss having a nice assortment of games on the shelf and most importantly the resale value on a game I don't like. You get burned on a $15 download you are out $15 end of story.

Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
Since you can't sell downloadable games, they should do like XBLA, make them all have demos so you know what you're getting into. If it's not a sure thing, and if it's not SUPER cheap, there's no reason to gamble on a downloadable game when you can't get rid of it.

Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
Listened to the @1UP podcast and they confirmed the slide screen PSP Go. They did not say if it was just a UMD less version of current tech or a totally new platform. Still not seeing this posted online, but sounds like the mock ups we saw are pretty close to reality unless the 1UP guys were just goofing on the podcast. Sounded legit they said David Ellis saw it.
Edit: They have the story up now. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173959 Guess it isn't exactly a new PSP platform just the next version of the current hardware and as I thought months ago it is UMD free. Remains to be seen if it will have a touch screen and games made exclusively for the PSP Go! |
Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
Don't like the idea of a UMD-less PSP, if Sony decides to go that route. After all, it ruins backwards compatibility if you have a library of UMD PSP titles.
As for Patapon 2 shipping as empty boxes with a download voucher inside, that's just silly. We get "Eco-cases" for Blu-ray releases that actually contain discs inside the package and here they are shipping millions of basically empty boxes? I'm interested in Patapon 2 but I'd much rather have a disc-based release of this. Hopefully, they'll release one one day. |
Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
So, the Patapon 2 demo came out last week, and the full version download vouchers were in stores yesterday (with the game available to buy on the PSN later today). Anyone try the demo yet, or the full game?
I picked up my voucher last night and I'm just a little bit past where the demo left off. So far it's fun. The new hero character and the evolution "skill tree" thing are good additions. Hopefully it doesn't get frustrating the way the first one did. Like many others, I gave up on that one around the desert level, though now I'm curious to see if I could go back and get further into it. The sequel doesn't drastically change anything, but I look forward to getting deeper into it. |

Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
looks pretty cool. reminds me of the sony mylo minus the keyboard and replaced w/ the psp controls. damn, so much for a 2nd analog stick though :(

Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
Looks rather ugly to me. They said it will exist with the 3000, but how long until UMD quietly fades away...

At least Patapon 2 had a demo so people could try it first and if Sony goes this route maybe, but I just have no interest in digital downloads of full priced games unless I am 100% sure I want the game. I'm very doubtful about this succeeding for 3 reasons. It isn't hackable so that will lose some appeal with that group. It isn't for kids which is apparently a pretty large part of the PSP audience. I don't see parents giving their kids accounts to buy games with online. It will be more expensive. He mentions during the video that this will be premium product. The PSP needed to get cheaper not more expensive. If this is priced above $200 it is a complete waste. I just bought a netbook with a bigger screen and better video support for a little over $200. I couldn't justify $200 for a PSP Go! that none of my UMDs work with. |
Re: The Official PSP Thread - Part 3
Still just one analog stick, eh? Oh well, my first-gen PSP has seen better days, so I might trade it in for one of these depending on the price.

Who exactly are they marketing this thing to -- anyone who wants a Sony portable gaming system and has disposable income surely has a collection of UMD games by now -- this isn't like Nintendo getting you to trade in your DS for a DSi; here you would render you gaming catalog unplayable for the minimal benefits that an "upgrade" would provide.

Seems like that could be tricky, and I'm not sure how they could do that while preventing fraud and abuse, but if they figure it out, that would at least solve the UMD issue.
I have never minded the UMD and don't really understand all the hate it has gotten. If they had just reasonably priced their movies on it to start out, I don't think there would have been as much hate. And these old games routinely trade for $5 to $10 on goozex...so why would I download them? And if they won't sell new ones at a reasonable price, why even consider them? The Pursuit Force games are trading for approx $16 (300 points plus a trade credit) and I get to trade it back once done or sell it. Like new and even sealed copies are selling for less than $10 each plus shipping for the old UMD versions. Kinda silly to come out with a $23 price tag on the downloads. Why not make all the games like this $10 or less and get people excited about the system and games for it? Plus I am big on larger screens and the new screen is actually smaller than the 3000 version. At least the DSi up-sized it's screen. I just got my PSP for X-mas and I love the damn thing. It gets WAY more play than my PS3. I just hope they don't kill the system entirely by doing this. |

One other feature I love about the PSP is the removable battery. I can bring a backup with me and usually have enough to watch several movies without needing to plug it in anywhere. Looking at the new design I'm not seeing a door for easy battery replacement. |

I completely missed that. Yeah they went from a 4.3" screen to a 3.8" screen. The DSi worked because everything improved and nothing was lost except GBA support that was from a previous generation of handhelds. This one is dumping the UMD that I also never had an issue with, shrinking the screen, changing the type of Memory Stick used so I will have to buy new ones if I fill my 16GB internal and forces me to buy overpriced digital content I can't sell. This thing has loser written all over it unless it ends up being really cheap, but I just don't see that being the case.
