Game console pricing...from day one????

My buddy & I were discussing the 360 price and got into console pricing. If I remember correctly (I was only 10 or so), the Atari 2600 was $200 when it first hit, and games were in the $40-$50 range...can anyone confirm this? Also, if you know of a console & price (at launch), please post it & I will update this post with the info. This can be anything from Atari/Sega/Genesis/Intellivision, etc...

Here are some that I'm sure about:

XBOX 360:
--console-$400 ($300 for core)
--games-$60

XBOX:
--console-$300
--games-$50

PS2:
--console-$300
--games-$40-$50

There are others that I think I know, but not for sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
S2

The PS3 thread has an awesome chart of all the consoles prices, even a version with inflation factored in. Check it out...

I don't think there were any PS2 games that were $40 when the system launched. At some point a couple of years or so later, Sony decided to drop the price on the games it published to $40.

Also, with Xbox 360, the Microsoft-published games are $50.

I know there were some 60-70 dollar games on the Genesis, like Phantasy Star II, III, and IV...

There were definately $60-$70 SNES games, especially during the heyday.

Gamecube, N64, SNES, and NES where all $199 at launch. Games were $50 at launch for the most part for all if I remember correctly.

There were some $60-70 carts here and there, but not at launch that I can recall and only for a few games here and there.

I remember paying 80 bucks for FF3 and Chrono Trigger, and looking back I would have paid $100. Now of course I rarely buy games over 20 bucks.

Nope, I had the N64 preordered. It was originally announced at $249, but the price dropped to $199 for launch, and Mario 64 was $49.99 as well. Though I think the game stores may have sold it for $59.99 while the big box stores had it for $49.99.
