Edit This was in response to a post about sony making lots of money that was deleted after I replied.
I think he was mainly referring to MS who has lost millions on the X-box and 360 thus far. But speaking of sony, they expect to lose $877 Million in start up costs over the PS3 in the coming months. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3150012 Nintendo's consoles are cheap, and they have huge hit first party games. They make millions in their niche market, while MS and Sony will be losing millions trying to rule the living room. |

Nintendo wants to bring in a new type of gamer, but the CORE audience that got them the legend they ride on till today, is growing, not wanting a new spongebob game. Anyway, as the day has gone by, i have no problems with the Wii name anymore. Its their way to try a icon vs a game system. Good luck. |

Can we keep this thread ontopic? This discussion would probably be better suited for the 1/Only "Wii" thread.
|
Sorry. I'll bow out. Thread has served it's purpose and should probably just be closed. But then again I guess if nothing else it will keep threadcraps about the name from popping up in the main Rev thread, so I guess it still has a purpose. :D
|
I'm sure more wise cracks will be found tomorrow ;) Yeah we can keep them in here until everyone is used to the name. I already changed the official thread title. :D

I think I realized why the name is so different to me. There's nowhere in the english language where we use "ii" as part of a word. Nor is it derived from any other english word like "dream cast". Is this unprecedented for the US market? I mean even the original Nintendo was pulled solely from the name of the company (company names can be non-sensical like Atari or Sega).
Which of these below doesn't fit: Master System Turbo Grafx Genesis Lynx GameGear Playstation XBox Dreamcast Wii Gameboy DualScreen 64 2600 GameCube See what I mean? So maybe their thinking is the gaming is something that's never been done, so why not have a name that's never existed before. Kinda cool I guess. The name really stinks of Shiggy though, I bet he had final say. I'm just afraid it'll get lambasted by mainstream press and never have a chance to really make it here. I guess it'll ultimately come down to price point and the name will be pretty meaningless in the end. It's starting to grow on me. Maybe we'll see ad slogans like: Wii Knoo Yuu'll Luuv Thaa Wii. |
Speaking of wii - holy crap the cyber squatters were busy today. Try typing in some wii domains like wiigaming or wiigames

Please GP. My posts are not out of line in a thread like this. You unfairly quoted me for one, I'm not accusing anyone, I'm directly responding to a concenous of a thread that has effectively lowered the quality of the dvdtalk boards to that of IGN. It's sad. I'll leave it it at that. Jeff, I'm with you, but just so we are both clear... Making cracks about the PS3 looking like a Foreman = thread lock Making cracks about wii with racist and dick jokes =  |
I just can't beleive how immature people are about a name. What's the average age around here? Jesus, the name comes from another culture, are you people just a bunch of red state non-tolorant assholes?
|
I will say the success or failure of the Wii will have absolutely nothing to do with the name of the console. I remember how stupid people thought the name iPod was when announced, but they seem to deal with it now.
I hate the name Wii, but couldn't really care less what they call it. I still refer to gaming on a Nintendo system with the old 80's term "playing Nintendo" so what's the difference. |

You're right, I'm sorry. I'll bow out of the thread, I stick to the ones that talk about games. My IQ isn't low enough for this one. |

To get back on topic, the fine folks over at Penny Arcade weighed in on the issue:
You really must be joking. What names were rejected, that something like Wii remained vertical at the end of it? The range of responses thus far have not been terribly surprising. It's the usual camps, really, and I don't know if these positions exist throughout all of human dialogue or if they are local to our merry band, but they are known to me. People who hate it because they hate X, people who hate it because it is not good, people who like it because other people hate it, people who like it because they are "above the fray," and people who like it because they like X. The first million times I saw this scene play out I could always find some piquant flavor in the proceedings, something that made each conflict unique. Now all I see is a kind of template superimposed over every motive, as though the argument were taking place between cells on a spreadsheet. I'm uncomfortable with it because I think a word of alien origin like "Wii" is phonetically ambiguous for most people, but I doubt that I represent some genuine constituency. Nintendo clearly felt the name was so cryptic it required a Rosetta Stone alongside to contextualize it, which doesn't really speak to its deep strength or intuitive character. I believe, almost fervently, in their vision for the product - but I don't see any reason to do their public relations work for them. Enunciating each syllable clearly, I would call this moniker a profound error in judgement. I'm aware that some people like it, or in any event they don't hate it. I am not those people, but I think that I can live in peace with them as long as they do not try and honestly suggest that the Goddamn name is emblematic of togetherness. What makes me mad isn't that Nintendo has chosen a name based on bizarre, interstellar philsophy. It's that they chose a name that was and is so readily used to obscure and discredit the imaginative power of the system. Up until now, they've done an almost miraculous job maintaining enthusiasm for what is really a very unorthodox idea. To be honest, I sort of thought this would be the easy part. (CW)TB out. |
I agree with Penny Arcade that the name is a blunder and I agree with the majority of gamers that Penny Arcade's comics are not in the least bit funny.
|
I think Nintendo named it the Wii so people would have a harder time trashing it. i.e. Wii will suck balls.

I'm just guessing this is how the marketing meeting went for the creation of Wii.
Bigshot President of Marketing: OK, people. It's time to name this year's console so we can get all the promotion material created for E3. Hit me with your best shot! Marketing Peon 1: Well sir, we really think Revolution is an excellent name. Our core audience already identifies with the name and it promotes the idea of progress into Next-Gen gaming. Bigshot: Fuck that. Revolution has too many syllables and no pothead teenager is going to remember that. We need something short with 1 syllable, like iPod. You're fired! Next idea, now! Peon 2: Uuugh, iPod has 2 syllables, sir. We really think Revolution is the way to go. Bigshot: i is not a syllable. It's a letter, asshole. You're Fired! Think outside the box people or get the fuck out of this meeting. -mass exodus from the meeting leaving only the confused, French exchange student interning at Nintendo- Bigshot: So Frenchie, do you have an actual idea for me? Frenchie: Oui Bigshot: Holy Shit, that's catchy! But we will spell it in American and add an extra i to the end. That will make our console twice as good as the iPod! I'm a fucking genius. The End |
