I'd love to have sat in on the brainstorming session when their marketing team came up with that...

Michael Ballack 04-27-06 11:45 AM

Ok.....

pinata242 04-27-06 11:46 AM

:jawdrop:
What... the... hell...? Revolution stands for me. Makes one wonder if this is now officially released, what else they have up their sleeve for E3 and the pre-show conference. I thought the name was going to be a secret until then. Hopefully we'll get a date and/or price at least.

For those of you keeping score at home:
Revolution > Go > Wii

DVDChris 04-27-06 11:49 AM

Nintendo is disappointing me

huh? 04-27-06 11:53 AM

I don't see what the big deal is. They could call it the Nintendo Shitbox and I'd still buy it based on what I've seen of the games and the control concept. Its just a name.

kakihara1 04-27-06 11:53 AM

Dumbest console name ever -ohbfrank- It will forever be known as Revolution to me.

nodoubt 04-27-06 11:55 AM

yeah im gonna still buy it but ill call it the revolution

PixyJunket 04-27-06 12:03 PM

Hoo ha?

PixyJunket 04-27-06 12:09 PM

"Introducing... Wii. As in "we."

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games...and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

pinata242 04-27-06 12:12 PM

I think the tagline is:

"Introducing Nintendo Wii - Taking the F out of your WiFi experience!"

PixyJunket 04-27-06 12:13 PM

Wee wee. :D2:

Blitz6Speed 04-27-06 12:13 PM

Dumbest name possible. Go nintendo!

pinata242 04-27-06 12:22 PM

Wii Teaser Video (temporarily hosted until http://revolution.nintendo.com recovers).

UncleGramps 04-27-06 12:26 PM

A little piece of me just died inside.

I've been a Nintendo fan since the early 80s, but this is just an awful, awful name. Can you imagine walking into a game store and asking for New Game X for the Wii? -ohbfrank-

I sincerely hope that this is not the actual finalized name. I think I might write a letter to Nintendo. Hell, I'd rather buy a Nintendo Shitbox than a Wii...

joshd2012 04-27-06 12:28 PM

Way too close to Viiv if you ask me. Like others here, I will continue to call it the Revolution.

I was thinking the same thing. I'll probably just ask for Game X for the Nintendo.

Wii. ? I'll have to process that one some more before coming up with a decision, but ultimately the name means nothing.

MasterofDVD 04-27-06 12:32 PM

A name is supposed to mean nothing. I was bummed that MS only went with numbers to make it's new console stick out when said. For years I've wondered how long Sony is going to play the numbers game and it looks like at least 1 more generation. All have been great systems. I'm sure Nintendo is going to have a popular console due to the innovative controller and downloadable games but with a name like that I would never talk about the system in public.

Groucho 04-27-06 12:34 PM

Apparently, the console will come in three sizes: Wii, not-so-Wii, and Friggin' Huge.

rotfl

Thank you, Groucho, for putting everything in perspective.

Edit: SIG!

pinata242 04-27-06 12:38 PM

I imagine the reason they released this so early is to allow the laughter to subside a little. That, and for Reggie to compose himself enough by E3 to actually stand in front of the world and say:

"Wii is going to revolutionize the way we play games; only not enough to actually call it a 'revolution'. Wii is the culmination of all we have been working towards the last 2 decades as a company and innovator and we couldn't be more excited about Wii. Now Wii are going to show you what we can do... Shit, I KNEW I was going to fuck that up!"

Josh H 04-27-06 12:41 PM

Pretty dumb, can't help marketing at all.

PixyJunket 04-27-06 12:42 PM

Maybe we should go back to having a different console name between regions..? This is probably something that doesn't sound as bad to the Japanese. I don't know.. it's not any worse (or better) than 64. Nintendo 64.. Nintendo Wii.. hmm, not sure.

darkside 04-27-06 12:46 PM

Ehh. I guess. Deliver solid software and call it what you want. Its at least an odd enough name for people to talk about and remember.
