REVOLUTION's final name is...
|
I'd love to have sat in on the brainstorming session when their marketing team came up with that...
|
Ok.....
|
:jawdrop:
What... the... hell...? Revolution stands for me. Makes one wonder if this is now officially released, what else they have up their sleeve for E3 and the pre-show conference. I thought the name was going to be a secret until then. Hopefully we'll get a date and/or price at least. For those of you keeping score at home: Revolution > Go > Wii |
Nintendo is disappointing me
|
I don't see what the big deal is. They could call it the Nintendo Shitbox and I'd still buy it based on what I've seen of the games and the control concept. Its just a name.
|
Dumbest console name ever -ohbfrank- It will forever be known as Revolution to me.
|
yeah im gonna still buy it but ill call it the revolution
|
Hoo ha?
|
"Introducing... Wii. As in "we."
While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games...and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean? Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii. Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd. So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything." |
I think the tagline is:
"Introducing Nintendo Wii - Taking the F out of your WiFi experience!" |
Wee wee. :D2:
|
Dumbest name possible. Go nintendo!
|
Wii Teaser Video (temporarily hosted until http://revolution.nintendo.com recovers).
|
A little piece of me just died inside.
I've been a Nintendo fan since the early 80s, but this is just an awful, awful name. Can you imagine walking into a game store and asking for New Game X for the Wii? -ohbfrank- I sincerely hope that this is not the actual finalized name. I think I might write a letter to Nintendo. Hell, I'd rather buy a Nintendo Shitbox than a Wii... |
Way too close to Viiv if you ask me. Like others here, I will continue to call it the Revolution.

A name is supposed to mean nothing. I was bummed that MS only went with numbers to make it's new console stick out when said. For years I've wondered how long Sony is going to play the numbers game and it looks like at least 1 more generation. All have been great systems. I'm sure Nintendo is going to have a popular console due to the innovative controller and downloadable games but with a name like that I would never talk about the system in public.
|
Apparently, the console will come in three sizes: Wii, not-so-Wii, and Friggin' Huge.

Thank you, Groucho, for putting everything in perspective. Edit: SIG! |
I imagine the reason they released this so early is to allow the laughter to subside a little. That, and for Reggie to compose himself enough by E3 to actually stand in front of the world and say:
"Wii is going to revolutionize the way we play games; only not enough to actually call it a 'revolution'. Wii is the culmination of all we have been working towards the last 2 decades as a company and innovator and we couldn't be more excited about Wii. Now Wii are going to show you what we can do... Shit, I KNEW I was going to fuck that up!" |
Pretty dumb, can't help marketing at all.
|
Maybe we should go back to having a different console name between regions..? This is probably something that doesn't sound as bad to the Japanese. I don't know.. it's not any worse (or better) than 64. Nintendo 64.. Nintendo Wii.. hmm, not sure.
|
Ehh. I guess. Deliver solid software and call it what you want. Its at least an odd enough name for people to talk about and remember.
|
In France it'll be Nintendo Yes!

Still getting one at launch though. I'll be asking for the new Nintendo. |
I can see their marketing campaign now: Wii Will Rock You!
|
Maybe they can use some Wang components in the new Wii.

Obviously, Nintendo choosing a name like "Wii" proves that they are not clever enough to come up with such a simple, seamless marketing plan. Disgraceful. Let me also state that I will buy one opening day. |
Ya know.. the worst part about this is the lame Penny Arcade that'll come from it. :(
|
I think lotsofdvds already gave us a preview of the Penny Arcade comic for Friday.
|
What are you doing in your room Billy?
Playing with my Wii! |

They should call it the Nintendo Little Wii-Wii.
This reminds me of the Sega Dreamcast's pre-launch codename which was the Sega Katana. In both cases, the codename was a thousand times better than the final name. -ohbfrank- On the bright side though, at least it won't be called the Nintendo Dolphin (which was the Gamecube's codename). |
Pretty bad name, but I didn't like Revolution when I first heard that either. But it's just a name so I could give a rat's ass.
I am curious to see what the ad campaign will look like now though. |
I should probably mention that I'll still be picking one up on launch day, but I refuse to call it "Wii". This is without a doubt the worst console name I've ever heard in my 20+ years of gaming. I would like to take a Wii on the short-bus marketing people who came up with this idea.

I dunno - it's catchy. They'll build/incorporate the "Wii" name around the sleek design of the system.
I'm buying one regardless. |
