You have a point, people won't hurry out to get one just because of the name.

But when has that ever been the case? It's about hype. It's about praise. It's about word of mouth of experience. The iPod has had that. The DS has that. The Wii will have that.

Also, most gamers will want PS3's. Non-gamers won't want either the PS3 of the Wii. After knowledge spreads, both will probably want the Wii, and only gamers will still want the PS3. I'm just saying. It'll spread to more people than other marketing strategies. In the long run, this is a good choice. (little bit of fun: replace "gamers" with "dads" and "Non-gamers" with Moms... or "guys" and "girls"... "young people" and "parents")

Nintendo fans aren't going to be swayed no matter what.

The problem is that the name is going to hurt sales to the casual market.

The same statement could be directed back to you. People on this forum may say it's a little weird but will still get it anyway. I don't know if the general public will have the same reaction.

Dumb name - just like almost every other videogame system ever made. Can't say I really care what it's called one way or the other.

Still, it's a safe bet that "Wii" is far more international-friendly than "Revolution".

It will all come down to the games. Casual gamers aren't going to buy a nintendo system right off the bat anymore regardless of what it's called.

Nintendo has to woe them back with games that have been sorely lacking the past two generations. The great games have been great, their just haven't been enough of them.

Will Nintendo sell the Wii in yellow?

As for my family, Wii could care less what the name is... Wii'll be getting one anyway.

Right, once the dust settles from the "internet" crowd over the new name nobody is going to care any more or less than if it had been called Revolution (though I'm sure it'll always be a catalyst for some people to continue posting stupid MySpace-style pictures everywhere). Wii is a dumb name but Revolution is also a pretentious name; remember all the crap being posted when that was first announced? After the initial reactions people went back to focusing on what the system and games.

Joking aside, I am pretty pissed I missed the chance to get the yellow PS2.

Interesting name, not sure if I like it or not. What has surprised me has been the gaming communities response thus far. I guess now that Sony and MS fanboys are getting increasingly agitated by the constant positive praise of the "Wii" system they have to latch on to something to attack. I fail to understand why "Xbox", "Gamecube" or "Playstation" are any better in any serious terms.

I'll wait for the games before passing judgement, but I'm willing to bet its going to be awesome; thus my signature.

Also, the international standpoint is one of the better reasons to defend the Wii. And without fail, to us gamers, anything that does great in Japan is something we want.

They're not. I remember the crap Xbox and Gamecube got for their names, now they're rarely mentioned.. of course, the original Playstation came out way before the internet hit big time so by PS2 time people were already used to it. Like I said, just let the dust clear on it. It IS funny how out-of-proportion "internet" people take things though. My friend and I, HUGE Nintendo geeks, this is essentially our email trail from today's news:

Me: Hey, Revolution's official name is Wii.
Him: That's dumb, I like Revolution better.
Me: Me too.
Him: I'm still getting one, of course.
Me: Seven more months!
Him: Cool. So, what are you doing this weekend?

How do you figure? Revolution is about the same in all latin based languages(rivoluzione, revolution, revolucion), along with Australia + UK.

Ah ha! I caught your problem. It appears you suffer what the internet nerds sometime refer to as "maturity". Its a disease that attaches to those that have a life outside the internet. Usually there is nothing that can be done once its been had. Rare cases of divorce, and middle ageness are known to fight its effects, but it is usually short lived. Good luck to you sir...

I hear ya. However, the Chinease and Indian markets are maturing quickly, and are expected to play a much larger role in the next cycle. I bet there is more money by appealing to those gamers then HDTV owners, for instance...

As for the Asia issue, as someone else pointed out, why not just use a different system name in that region and let the rest of us call it the Revolution?

Anyway, this whole "Wii" business is not the end of the world, but it's just such a bone-headed decision on Nintendo's part. I guess their next handheld will be the Puu?
